I got rumbled the other day. I had quietly bought a 5d mk2 from here to compliment my 7d and had it delivered to home. As it was nicely wrapped up so you couldn't tell what it was, when I got asked what it was, I casually answered "something for my tripod". Now technically that's not lying as a camera does go on a tripod, so my conscience was relatively clear.
Fast forward a week and it's our son's 6th birthday. I've got the 5d out, snapping away quite happily and revelling in the quality of images its producing. My wife even takes a few photos herself and doesn't notice the difference. Thinking I've got away with it (which I had!) I was breathing a sigh of relief. Until my friend, who's a keen photographer, boldly says to me, with my wife right next to me, "Christ, I didn't know you'd bought a new camera - a 5d too!!"
Cue from me lots of justification along the lines of "well it was a steal and I couldn't not buy it",' "I've managed to save loads on the cost of a new one" (of course quoting RRP of £2300!!), "it takes a different sort of photo to my other camera", "I'm figuring out which I prefer then will sell the other one and not loose any money".
In the end I had to come clean and tell her how much it cost. Cue from her "we could have gone on holiday for that", "I want the house redecorating", "I want new windows for the house" type come backs!!
In the end then, I saved about £500 on my new camera, but am now £4,500 and counting into house improvements to keep her quiet!!!
And the moral of the story? Make sure you come clean to your friends and tell them to keep their mouths shut!!!
Enjoy your new kit.
