Hi,
I want to buy one to help with editing photos, but not sure which one to buy? Was pointed to wacom bamboo? But what size?! I looked on eBay and there are loads!! Any info would be great.

Thanks

My advice would be to buy second hand if you are unable to borrow one to try. The size really depends on how detailed you need your brush strokes to be. I have an A5 Intuos which is more than enough for paining the broad brush strokes for masks in Lightroom for example and an A6 one should be just as good. Any smaller would just be a pain!

Depends on your monitor area/resolution IMHO. I have 2 x 24" monitors (each 1920x1200) and a Wacom Intuos 4 medium which has a 9" x 6" active area. That seems about right for general stuff. It also feels right when I lock the tablet to a single monitor for more precise work.

The Wacom is my second tablet and for feel and precision is quite clearly head and shoulders above my last tablet (an Aiptek).

It's a very small active area (or it would be for me) at around A6 sized. If it were me (remember I have a total desktop area of 4000x1200) I'd go the Fun which has twice the active area: http://www.bestbuy.co.uk/product/1000115352/wacom-bamboo-fun-small-pen-touch-tablet.aspx as it has twice the active area (around A5 sized).

I believe the most popular Intuos 4 is the M which has a 9"x6" active area (just a bit bigger than the Fun).

I have an old a3 size serial wacom tablet, but I've moved down to an Intuos. I don't like working with small tablets, I find them quite restricting as I like the higher resolution and finer movement you can get with the larger tablets. The newer Intuos 4 L's are approx 1:1 movement to the monitor, but for high resolutions the XL are brilliant.

They are expensive though.

Thanks I was going to spend that much on the intuos 4, but the bamboo fun looks ok :) thanks

I got a bamboo pen a week or two ago. It's the cheapest wacom you can get, but it has completely changed the way I look at photoshop - it gives you so much more control. It's tiny, only A6 but it works great and for less than €50 you can't go wrong.

I've a wacom bamboo and while it's a great little thing I just can't get used to it so rarely us it. But for how cheap it was it's a good starting point to see how you get on with one before you spend a lot on something you might not use.

I have the bamboo tablet and I work on 2 x24" monitors without any problem at all, i`ve not used a mouse for over 4 years. It will take you a day or 2 to find your way around it, but I`m sure that when you get the hang of the tablet you will never go back to using a mouse.
The Bamboo tablet is worth the money, and it can do just as much as the tablets that cost far more..

Ive got a bamboo, really struggled with it for first couple hours so havent touched it since- this thread has given me the egg on to pick it up and try it again :bang:

Whilst I wouldn't disagree the Bamboo is worth the money, saying it can do just as much may be a tad misleading ;)

What are you struggling with? Pen movement vs screen movement?

I keep accidently dragging the pen across the tablet like you would a pen to paper- i should be just hovering it over the tablet then pressing down. Its a bit confuddling.

I use a Wacom A4 Intuos4 on a 27inch screen. Maps pretty well but does take up quite a bit of desk space. While not essential, it makes life a LOT easier if you do a lot of retouch work that requires accuracy.

Agreed. I've used the entire Wacom range from Graphire through Intuos to Cintique. The Bamboo, while good for the price, does not match the features of the higher end of the range.

I've got a Bamboo, whist it is better than a mouse, I think the extra features of the Intuos range, such as the jog wheel for switching desktops/fullscreen apps in Lion would be better.

Ever since I started using the bamboo, my wireless keyboard and mouse were behaving very eratic. I traced the fault................ moved the box the bamboo came in away from the computer- now all is well lol
