What did you achieve in 2009? Goals for 2010

2009 Amongst lots of things I think the best was giving you lot a welding glass and the ability to shoot 15 stops slower for a couple of quid, nothing else comes close for me as I got pure satisfaction from all your great results :D

2010 Going pro with another TP member and finally opening the new studio.

Won a camera for getting picture of the week in the telegraph.

I won a camera in a photography competition once.

It seems to be a strange choice for a prize considering all the contestants would have needed a camera already to enter.

I sold mine to someone at work.

Steve.

2009 wasn't a good year generally as I lost my father, my father in law and my grandfather this year. However, some good points:

Started to make this: http://stevesmithphoto.webs.com/pano612.html
Gave away some of my 'spare' cameras.
Discovered Prescysol developer.

Aims for 2010:

Finish this: http://stevesmithphoto.webs.com/pano612.html
Go out with camera(s) more often.
Take some of my father's camera collection out for the odd roll of film to keep the shutters working.

future

- Hopefully one day ill actually like my work.

On the flip side, me and wife were trying for baby, and we suffered a miscarriage around the same time the shop opened. It helped put lots of things in perspective for us, and we are both OK and coped well. Claire is super strong, and I can cope with more or less anything if I am busy.

Sorry to hear that Gary, same thing happened to me and the wife last year :( I'm pleased to report we now have a nipper due on 3rd May, I'm sure it will come good for you too :)

2009:

Shot alot of stuff for Custom Car Magazine most of which hasn't been published yet
Shot at London Fashion Week
Shot a big week long car event in the USA
Published in Milkcow Magazine
Published in Gasser Magazine
Published in Connected Magazine
Showed some work at a few car shows
Got the design and content of my book sorted out

2010:

Continue working with Magazines, may try and sydicate some work to the US.
Print book (will be a very limited run with signed numbered copies)
Put on gallery show to launch book
Try not to take too many baby photos

:)

2009:
- Got my first DSLR camera 4 months ago
- Enjoyed it!
- I joined TP

2010:
- Improve...
- Build up a bit of a portfolio, perhaps work out what I like shooting best
- Get to some Motorsport events
- Sort out a simple web-site
- Join my local camera club
- Improve my macro stuff
- Try and enter every round of POTY

2009
- Started to get used to my first DSLR, my Olympus E420 bought in Nov 08
- Realised that I quite enjoyed this photography lark
- One of my photos won a prize in a TrustedReviews.com photo competition
- Then got a photo featured on the BBC news website and then again in a different TrustedReviews.com photo comp
- Had a photo shortlisted in the Leicestershire Through A Lens photo comp
- Got rid of the Olympus and switched to a Canon 500D
- And promptly had the first proper photo taken with it featured in another TrustedReviews photo comp!
- A friend of my wifes liked my work so much that she asked me to take some photos for her, 4 of which are now hanging on her walls in canvas form :)
- And a different colleague of hers liked my stuff so much she asked me to be the official photographer for a charity event she's running.
- Took some unofficial photos at my sisters wedding. Almost everybody preferred them to the official photographers...
- Went to the TP Convention and met some great people
- Realised that my photographic passion lies with landscapes and macro
- Although, after being terrified of shooting people, realised it's actually quite fun and invested in a set of studio lights in order to branch out into portraits.
- Then bought a 5D MarkII :D

2010
- Step things up a bit - start getting paid for photography
- Start advertising as a portrait photographer
- Maybe venture towards the dreaded weddings...
- ... but remember where the passion lies, so get up to the Lakes for some stunning landscapes
- Visit more of the UK - Skomer, Skye, coastal areas and get some shots to be proud of
- Enter more competitions in order to broaden my skillset
- Contribute more on here :)
- Try not to buy any more bodies for 12 months
- But remember to keep on enjoying it :)

2009 has been a bit crazy for me. I left my job delivering pizza and started delivering car parts. I always enjoyed pinching my dads 350d and just messing around with it, taking pictures of my cars and what not, changing settings when I didn't know what they did.

August came round, and for some reason I decided to apply for a degree in lens based photo media, which I was duly accepted onto based on my portfolio. :bonk: :cuckoo:

Bought a 450D a week before the course started and have been learning everything to do with it since (this was a very rushed thing and one I was not in any way prepared for) Not really found the time for film unfortunately, and missed the lesson where the enlarger was explained and demonstrated. ooooooppps. But my 1987 Chinon is a joy to work with it has to be said.

I've even had my images published in a weekly national paper 2 weeks in a row, with reports written by me, and got paid for it. This helped fund todays mac purchase...

2010.....

Buy photoshop. Pronto.
Learn photoshop. Like, 5 weeks ago. (who wants to sit literally rubbing shoulders, 7 in a row on someone else's iMac to learn photoshop anyway? There isn't even enough room to put a gadget bag down, let alone have my 'space')(I know, I know, needs must, but I couldn't concentrate being packed so close. Music was way too tempting)
Make more time for everything in life, mainly shooting film though.
Set up a darkroom at home.
Soldier through despite illness and achieve the best I can.

woooooooow, big rant but I feel I needed it. Thank you for listening TP and good night!

2009-
Started Ok, got my first ever camera in June and started to get into photography. Bought books and tried to absorb what I could.

However due to constraints at work I've lost the time and energy to do anythign else but work so for the past 3 months the Camera has pretty much stayed in the bag :(.

However I've recently purchased a Tammy 90mm Macro lens to play in the house.

Plans for 2010:

1. Learn to Drive
2. Get out more!!
3. Learn as much as I can about photography
4. Set up a website

This year I've taken half as many shots as I did last year, but I think (hope ;)) the quality's improving: I've had some shots used for a professional website, my shots from a family wedding were used by the bride and groom in preference to those taken by the professional tog, and two other shots were published in magazines :D - and so next year, the target is to generate some cash from publication too :)

My year has been quite good photographically...

Acquired some nice new glass which accounts for a slimmer bank balance! :D

But on the other hand....

Sold an image unexpectedly to an advertising company which subsequently ended up full page in 2 editions of Hello , OK magazine and a couple of TV mags (ok they were published in Greece but what the heck :D)

Was commissioned to photograph Princess Anne at a function in London

Did my first 'wedding' (well a vow renewal but close enough - church, wedding dress and 40 guests! (And they liked the results (phew!);))

And next year? Well.... spend more dosh I guess and try to earn some as well :)

Oh and I was honoured to be given the keys to the TP Staff Biscuit tin :D

And met some terrific folk from these very forums!

Always a bonus

2009
Did a lot more weddings which reinforced the fact that I love doing them - including the OP's! Thanks Paul, it was a great day!
Had some fantastic clients this year everyone of which has been a joy to work with, this has included two photographers weddings which I suppose is a vote of confidence from my peers.
Cut back on the equestrian work with the exception of doing the major events such as Badminton and BEF work as I still have my goal of press accreditation for 2012 Olympics.
Finally got my blog sorted as the first phase of my transition away from my Flash site.
Had a regular assistant/second shooter for the whole year - cheers Tony!
One of my goals for this year was to concentrate on OCF work which I have throughly enjoyed and has helped to cement my 'style'.

2010
Enjoy it as much as I did this year.
Continue to learn.

2009

Fail - Didn't take any more pictures than in 2008 despite enrolling on two college courses
Win - Did join my local Flickr Strobist group, shot pretty people instead of inanimate objects, made a couple of new friends.
Fail - Didn't improve my picture taking skills (digitally) and didn't improve my photoshop skills
Win - Did improve my picture taking skills with film (initially)
Fail - Failed to carry momentum of improvement and saw rapid decline into mediocrity again.
Win - Learnt how to develop and print traditionally giving a massive sense of achievement.
Fail - Rapid initial improvement in the darkroom soon follwed by mounting frustration at not being able to achieve what little vision was in my mind's eye.
Win - Bought an A700, a complete darkroom setup, filters, flashes and medium format lenses.
Fail - Didn't kick my habit, Gear Acquisition Syndrome, my chosen fix for when I feel down about photography is to buy more gear.
Win - Converted my garage into a darkroom with stuff bought during a G.A.S. fix and made my first prints at home.
Fail - Didn't enter more than one round of the TP competition despite early eagerness due to complete lack of artistic ability or inspiration.
Win - Came 2nd in the local arts festival photography competition, norrowly beaten by an international travel photo which as we all know automatically go to the top of the pile in competitions;)
Fail - Took apart a rattly old lens, went and had my tea, forgot how it went back together.

2010

Find some photographic direction, if it doesn't happen this year I might pack it in and try something new.

2009
Improved on the moving sublject front, and thanks to TP, have a better understanding of light
2010
just to carry on improving and most of all, enjoy it

2009.

Got into 2nd year onto my course with an A.
Shot my first wedding and the B&G were chuffed.
Realised what kind of photography I really really want to do.

2010.

Get overseas with a charity, for help to them as well as my photography.
Possibly do a degree course next year.
Get out of the dayjob and into something I enjoy.
Oh yes and get a full frame camera!

2009
first and last wedding tough work

2010

try and specialise (when I find what I like the best)
buy new glass
learn more about photoshop

and most important try and get good at taking pictures :)

I've just reread a thread under a similar title that YV started for 2008!

This is what I wrote in that thread!

I haven't got out much this year as have had to too much going on elsewhere like getting Married, busy with work etc etc! Which is a pity :(

However I'm going to give myself a pat on the back as ;

1. I now have a website (ok quality of pics up for debate)
2. 'Manual' now doesn't scare me on my D700
3. I have got into the Lloyds of London Art Group and entered an exhibition where I sold 2 Canvases! http://www.lloydsartgroup.co.uk/
4. Finally found out I mainly like photographing people and Landscapes and i'm going to stick to that. Previously I was just buying lenses to cover all bases like Macro Lenses! The Fool!

Think that's it!

Goals for 2010

1. Improve website mainly from the excellent feedback I got from you guys who took the time to feedback!
2. Get a paid gig doing something even if it's just a portrait session
3. Improve!!!!! Improve!!!!! Improve
4. Hopefully with a smidgen of my Bonus come April own a Nikon 200m F2! (Helps not having a wedding to pay for lol)
5. Do a course - quite fancy one of Lovegrove's Urban Day's out - looks awesome.
6. Bloody learn CS4

So what did you guys achieve in 2009 and where do you want to be with your Photography in 2010?

Sooooo.... Where is everyone with this?!

This is me.

1. More content but still needs work :( Also fancy doinga blog as I think this will help focus me more.
2. Check :D
3. Improving slightly I think , Still much more is required here ;)
4. Luckily Bonus came good. Did own this lens but to be honest it was far too much for me at my stage - traded for a 70-200 VRII which is equally nice and easier to use :)
5. Check - Did a speedlite mastery course and would like now to do a studio course of some description and a wedding course. I still need to improve my use of light big time :(
6. I really find it a struggle to sit and learn things like this. That said now I'm getting out taking more pictures I'm find ways of post processing which I guess is good.

Bonus Point 7. - Helped out on a wedding which is probably the biggest eye opener so far photography wise (in a very positive way).

Frustrations so far.

Not getting enough camera time. I picked up a DSLR about 1.5 years ago but I've only used it properly on a handful of occaisions :( . Not good enough - Pure and simple.

I want everything to work straight away, I think this comes from my day job. I've noticed now that on more recent shoots that I'm taking my time more, framing where I want the light to be etc. Almost builing up to shots if that makes sense. Probably not.

I also get frustrated with myself far too easily, which happened recently at a wedding I assisted to an extent where I almost wanted to jack the whole photography thing in. I didn't have the time I was used to when say shooting a model and I genuinely felt like a complete plonker some of the time. This of course was complete and utter **** (apart from being a plonker :) ) but it took me a few days to realise this. I had to understand time wasn't really a luxury and it was great seeing a how a pro does all this, the mindset, the way of doing things, where to be. It also helped that it was a slightly challenging wedding to be a part of which I think is great for cutting your teeth on if you're thinking of doing such a genre which I'd certainly like to do at some stage with a ton of practice of course.

Anyway enough drivvle from me.....

So where you lads and ladettes at?! Hope everything's all good
