What camera for my holiday?

Thanks, I was beginning to think I was an idiot :).
I didn't see any sexism or bullying in this thread, although I've read it through a couple of times just to see what could raise such concerns. Perhaps it's recent news that's making some people a little sensitive. I notice that the OP did hand out likes to a number of the early postings but hasn't responded otherwise.

Could be they're just rather busy at the moment.

Not necessarily sexist, though that could be an unconscious factor. She was made fun of for saying she had “all the big DSLR” which would be fair enough if jokingly put to a long time member (happens all the time, just leg-pulling) but not in this case to someone with 7 posts, albeit joined in 2020.

I bet there are a few in F&C who might have said something like “I’ve got all the digital stuff but I just prefer film”.

I heard on the radio last night 80 women have been killed in the UK by men in the last 6 months.

I would hope others give a little bit more thought before accusing some people of being " a little sensitive"
I don’t think @AndrewFlannigan meant it that way though I don’t think he’s correct. However maybe it is affecting your comment since you didn't say how many men had been killed in the same period. Though it’s always unwise to quote figures over such a short period especially if the numbers are small as in this case since it’s a rare occurrence no matter how serious :(.

I'm sure that you mean well but that misrepresents the true situation.

For the year 2019-2020, Homicides of males were 506 while homicides of women were 188 (37%). ( https://commonslibrary.parliament.uk/research-briefings/cbp-8224/ )

Males are far more likely to be homicide victims than females for many reasons but in any case, you completely misunderstood my original point.

Around 3 times as many men are killed than women in the UK. I'm not sure stats and numbers are useful.

I think my point is that the women were killed by men ... how many men were killed by women?

Anyway if I misunderstood your post I apologise, I found it quite a worrying statistic.

I can’t see how that is relevant. Are you saying that an equal number of men were killed by women that would be OK? I guess not because that would be daft.

I know :)

- I just do NOT believe her bold statement she has all the DSLRs and all the lenses- not even MPB have that many :) beats me why people make such stupid claims

"Hi guys I am an experienced photographer who owns their own photography business and I have all the big DSLR’s and lenses."

As a PS she did not even acknowledge my comments
I think you just need to stop taking things so seriously haha! Yes, I do have a lot of DSLR's but of course, I don't have them all it's called exaggeration. I apologise for my poor word choice but just as a little life tip, don't take everything someone says seriously as a lot of the time people are lying or ... exaggerating! p.s when people post an innocent question they are usually looking for some advice and not for someone to cry about their word choice. Have a nice day x

Got to say it, because nobody else has - some of the replies in this thread are awful.

- Oh diddums, didn't the OP reply to you directly thanking you for your magical insights?
- Oh no, she's claiming she has 'all the lenses' - not even **I** have *all* the lenses, she's clearly a liar and needs to be burnt or banned.
- Why should it take someone that's been here for years to pronounce publicly if we can treat her as genuine?

To me, this comes across as sexist bullying of someone newish to the forum and is not OK.
Thank you! I can tell you all i am not a spam account or anything. I am 20 and just trying to find my way in life and photography haha! I am sorry to the people who I have somehow upset by simply asking what camera everyone recommends I take on my first holiday abroad alone. I haven't been able to reply yet to all the comments as I posted the question around 7am yesterday and then started a 12-hour shift so I do apologise for my later reply to all those keyboard warriors sat at home! Thank you @mikeyt for your support x

I’ve been back and read her other threads and really there isn't anything spammy etc that I can see and she did respond with thanks in some so I don’t really see any reason to treat her as other than genuine :(.
I am genuine I promise! I don't know why I come across as not genuine to be honest ahah! I just asked a simple question:)

The OP hasn't bothered to acknowledge any replies here yet. I wouldn't expect such an amateurish question from an "experienced photographer. " She sure duped quite a few, though!
I am experienced with big DSLR's with multiple lenses, not compact travel cameras????

We do get spammy posts from time to time and have to take them at face value at first otherwise if they are genuine it would put off new members, often asking questions, so I see why some made a mistake.

However you seem well able to hold your own so good luck with your search. As you have seen it’s a question that’s been asked before.

Hi guys I am an experienced photographer who owns their own photography business and I have all the big DSLR’s and lenses.

However, I am going on holiday to Australia next year and I can’t decide what camera to take I don’t want to take my DSLR and big lenses as it’s too much to carry around. I was thinking of getting a new GoPro but I just don’t like the fact that I can’t zoom in on things.

Any suggestions on good travel cameras which won’t break the bank as it’s only for holiday and I may also get one of the older gopros to take with a compact camera too!
Thanks:)

A few questions which might help us help you a bit more, Aiesha.

Is it a once in a lifetime trip?
Is it city based or more countryside/wildlife (or both!)

I think for a trip like this I would take an apsc camera, a good balance between quality and weight.
Others have suggested a Fuji x with 18-55 or 18-135 lens, same idea.
Next year, when I hope to holiday abroad again my plan is to take a Nikon Z50 apsc with an 18-140 lens. Light enough to carry all day.
I will also take a Panasonic small sensor pocket camera, probably a TZ200.
Hope this helps.

The thing with APS-C v FF these days is it's very lens dependant, there may well be some bulk and weight savings or there may not be. For example my Sony A7 is relatively small and with a 35mm f2.8 there's no real bulk and weight saving compared to my RF style MFT cameras as all of these are too big for a pocket and would need to go in a bag (even if it's not a dedicated photography bag) and if I'm taking a bag I might as well take the FF camera. With some of the larger primes and zooms there still may be savings though.

But our holiday is going to be quite an active one eg snorkelling, hiking, boat trips, surfing.
If that helps.

Actually from that lot you’d have to say a waterproof Olympus Tough or similar.

This is a question that has been kicked about a lot on this forum and in this thread. I’ll have a bash at summarising what people say — I expect I’ll then be the one that gets kicked about :).
  1. Obviously you need to decide what you may want to snap. Perhaps look at what you do other than product photography.
  2. Maybe your phone is enough.
  3. If you are photographing in/around water the the Olympus Tough type, the sensor size is similar to a phone but waterproof and may do good close ups.
  4. There is a whole class called travel zooms usually with a 4/3, 1” or smaller sensor. Dpreview compares them. I think that’s probably what most people choose if photography is not the main aim Probably good for all the unplanned wildlife in Australia.
  5. The HCB version with the equivalent of a Fuji X100 series with a 35/40mmm.
  6. Or people choose one of their mirrorless dslrs with a compact zoom and maybe a pancake 40mm.
  7. I bet that often they end up not being able to make up their minds and decide to ’take the lot’ and then leave the heavy bag in their hotel room anyway ;).

It’s a bit of both actually, it’s Australia so beaches and also cities. I should have stayed in my question, sorry! I think I am going to just take an older gopro for the watersports but I was just a bit stuck on the compact camera side of things as I don’t ever use compact cameras so I wasn’t sure what were the good ones on the market at the moment:)

Sorry I should have explained more in my question, yes it’s a one in a lifetime trip and it’s all city/wildlife/watersports so that’s why I’m having such a hard time choosing!

When I used to go to Spanish family beach holidays I always took my 5D2 & 50/1.4 with a CPL - This was a good 10 years ago though now.

I think a high end compact would be your best bet for a compromise of size, weight, IQ, features, etc if you don't want the restrictions of a DSLR & a prime lens......!

Also..... Maybe buy something 'used' & resell it when you get back......?

I think you have to decide whether to take a body and a few small primes or a smallish body/zoom combo.
Personally I think zooms are very useful on holiday, no time to mess about changing lenses when there are so many other things to see and do.
Also small camera for back up and carrying in your pocket all the time.

Thank you!Yes I had actually had a think about maybe buying something used then selling it as I just worry I won’t use it much if at all once I’m back home:)

I do agree with you! I think I will get annoyed if I keep having to go change lenses while on holiday! I will definitely have a look at some of the compact zoom cameras some people have suggested. Thank you:)

Take a go pro for the beach/sea and something like a Panasonic Fz1000 or Sony rx10-mk3 or mk4 to cover a wide to tele range without having to change lenses plus giving you good quality and video capability .. the other alternative not yet mentioned is simply take a high spec I.phone 11 ,12 ,or 13

Aiesha, whatever camera you decide to take with you it will be a compromise to cover all the options you mentioned, otherwise you'll need a backpack full of kit. No camera is suitable for all uses. To help you decide what to take, balance cost and what's the most important part of the holiday to record. When I'm not going out to shoot something specific I'll often just carry a Sony RX100 VII. It's 1" sensor, lens and processing is very good for its compact size. It would be no use in the water, and if that is the most important part of your holiday to capture, then consider an Olympus Tough.

No problem.

Either a GoPro (or clone) as a space saving option or one of the waterproof compacts as the beach option and a Fuji X? with an 18-135 and a 100-400 for the wildlife and city.
