What are you currently reading..

The Darwin Elevator (Dire Earth Cycle 1) by Jason M Hough.

Nice bit of sci-fi again for me, seems pretty good and just noticed he's go vol 2 already with vol 3 out in about a week.... probably just as well as I've just read a comment about it basically being one book chopped into three.

I hate it when people increasingly are doing that - I suppose its commercially advantageous to sell three 7.99 paperbacks than try as an unknown author to pitch a 18 quid hardback.

About to start 'One step to far' by Tina seskis

Priest Kings of Gor, John Norman.

I've been threatening to read the series since about 1973. There are now about 32 books, I'm on no3.

It's kind of like Marmite :) , but I've started so I'll finish.

The original, although I fancy the Fry one to see his take on it

the fry one is a revisit - again with mark carwardine about 10 years later , well worth a look

After reading the Commonwealth and Void books last year I am finally at the end of The Reality Dysfunction by Peter Hamilton. Another tour de force. Have the two sequels ready to go on the kindle.

Ghost Rider: Travels on the Healing Road by Neal Peart (the drummer from the band Rush)

In less than a year, Neil Peart lost both his 19-year-old daughter, Selena, and his wife, Jackie. Faced with overwhelming sadness and isolated from the world in his home on the lake, Peart was left without direction. This memoir tells of the sense of loss and directionlessness that led him on a 55,000-mile journey by motorcycle across much of North America, down through Mexico to Belize, and back again. He had needed to get away, but had not really needed a destination. His travel adventures chronicle his personal odyssey and include stories of reuniting with friends and family, grieving, thinking, and reminiscing as he rode until he encountered the miracle that allowed him to find peace.

Pretty much the best modern sf out there, although his latest book was totally meh

The new Jack Reacher novel, awesome.

Yeah I just finished never go back - which lynton kindly sent me - I thought it was okay, better tha a wanted man , and on par with worth dying for - but not as good as the early ones (die trying and echo burning are probably my favourites)

Die Trying is my fave, followed by The Persuader!

see i though persuader was quite weak , and lacking in credibility

i keep looking at these.. starting from the beginning should keep me busy for awhile..:D

killing floor is the first one - well worth a look

(If you like them you should also check out Matt Hiltons "Joe Hunter" series , which starts with 'deadmens dust'

Excellent.
Read them in order.
And join the queue for Reacher.

yeah i will do, have the first one on the screen looking at it, got a couple of others to read first...

thing is i think i shall have to imagine him as someone else because cruise plays Jack doesn't he... and i don't like him

reacher is basically like me... only bigger

Oh lord ignore the movie moose reacher ..just read the books.

In the books he's bigger?

he's my height with a 50 inch chest... you know the thread where matt was (inaccurately) describing how he reckons I see myself 50 inch chest, dirty blonde hair, ice blue eyes etc ... that's Reacher he's describing.

:lol::lol::lol: ah yes he did lol didn't he!...

right so maybe i am having a :bonk: moment, but if the character is that big why would they get someone totally the opposite when they make a film?

Because Cruise owns the movie rights.
Moose doesn't

I shall make sure I sell the rights to Dave hawke to...................the highest bidder (naturally)

Exactly...finished never go back a few days ago :( while as always I enjoyed it I did feel it was a little weak especially the ending :(

to be honest with the latter 10th book onwards of Reacher.. it seems to be very formularic....and almost would suggest Child contracted to write a 450 page hardback.....

build up to page 100, some **** , then fill it up and last 20 pages, "and they all lived happily ever after" - except the bad guys!

Thinking I might re-read die trying I think that has to be my favourite one :D

Ive read up to and including The Enemy and my favourite two were Tripwire and The Visitor without doubt. Reading them in order I didnt like it when he switched suddenly from third person to first in Persuader.

Killing floor was in first person as well - they do seem variable, 'worth dying for' was as good as any of the earlier ones, but 'a wanted man' was tripe .

Marks out of ten for these ones then? :

One shot
The Hard way
Bad Luck And Trouble
Nothing To Lose ( I realise that should be 'Nothing to loose' on the internet)
Gone Tomorrow
61 Hours
Worth Dying For
The Affair
A wanted man
Never go back

One shot 5/10
The Hard way 2/10 (badly thought out plot and lacks credibility)
Bad Luck And Trouble 7/10
Nothing To Lose 0/10 (incredibly contrived - the line between hope and despair, give me a break)
Gone Tomorrow n/a - nothing to lose was so bad i'd lost interest and didnt read this one
61 Hours 5/10
Worth Dying For 9/10
The Affair 9/10 (note that this is a prequel - it comes chronologically it comes after the enemy, but before kiling floor)
A wanted man 5/10 (good action but an unbelievable ending)
Never go back 7/10 - better than a wanted man but still let down by a weak plot

yes - the first 8 are definitely worth it, if i was scoring them all it would be

killing floor 10/10
die trying 11/10
tripwire 9/10
the visitor 7/10
Echo burning 10/10
persuader 6/10
without fail 10/10
the enemy 9/10

after that they get a bit formulaic and are more 'okay' than absolutely brilliant - but even the bad ones are worth a read if you can pick them up cheap (or borrow them ;) )
