Better ergonomics, especially when using heavier lenses. I've got a D7000 - without the grip I find it uncomfortable to use the 17-55mm f/2.8 for prolonged periods of time.
If you shoot in portrait rather than landscape orientation for extended periods of time, your arm and shoulder will thank you for the duplicate set of shutter controls.
Bought my Nikon grip for d7K from classifieds here. £90 hard to say no. Battery life is fab on this camera. For me it's the balance and weight thing and I shoot tons on portrait mode, so like the extra controls. Very happy camper...
I got one on my d3100 for balance and comfort as I have big hands, now I just can't get on without it on. Btw, you can't get genuine Nikon ones for my camera so I had to get a third party one and I've not had a single problem.
