What are the benefits of battery grips?

Better ergonomics, especially when using heavier lenses. I've got a D7000 - without the grip I find it uncomfortable to use the 17-55mm f/2.8 for prolonged periods of time.

Bought my Nikon grip for d7K from classifieds here. £90 hard to say no. Battery life is fab on this camera. For me it's the balance and weight thing and I shoot tons on portrait mode, so like the extra controls. Very happy camper...

On the 20D it was all to do with the balance and feel of camera body and large lens. On my 1D its already built in :D

I got one on my d3100 for balance and comfort as I have big hands, now I just can't get on without it on. Btw, you can't get genuine Nikon ones for my camera so I had to get a third party one and I've not had a single problem.

Me too, the camera is small if you've got big hands like me so handling and balancing is much improved

For £25 for a third party one and £14 for a spare battery it as a no brainer for me
