You definitely need a sense of humour to survive on this forum :D

would really thick skin be a suitable substitute for a sense of humour?

I will say this again

1. Covering a wedding for somoene you know is much harder than for a stranger. Reason being: when I say jump people jump. When I ask my friends/family to jump, they start negotiating... oh its only richard, I will finish my conversation...

2. Besides the obvious task (the photography), shooting a wedding is about being able to manage yourself, your gear, the timings of the day, and others. The others have usually had a skin full as the day wears on. You are paid to get a result.

Stupid example about managing your gear - if your flash batteries start to run out at a key moment, you are stuffed. If your spare batteries are in the case over there, you missed the shot. Weddings are fast paced, and all day long you will be doing what you are doing now, and making sure you are prepared for whats going to happen next

Stupid example - grooup shots. weding is finished. 1/2 the females want to pee, half the men want to smoke, and 3 babies bums need changing. meanwhile, you are compiling a group shot. KNowing not to let them escape is the key, and this comes from experience

For this reason, do some second shooting, you will soon twig your weak areas, and know where you need to concentrate

3. Photographically weddings are chalenging. My first venue had bright orange walls, halogen down lighters. and sunlight streaming through the windows. the action was simmultaneously happening inside and outside. It meant I was needing to change the white balance every time I moved from one room to another and then when I went outside - and that's just the white balance. Because you will be under a lot of presure, you will get so wrapped up in getting the shots, the basics start to fall over (like forgetting to switch the flash on, or leaving it on a stupid ISO). For this reason, you need to get some second shooter jobs under your belt

4. My comment about shooting for free and charging for the ablums is to limit your liability (do have a contract). So charge £0.00 for shooting it, and a Grand or so for providing a top class album

5. You do need to know abouth the stuff that upsets Vicars/registrars. and as informal as they want it, you do need to learn how to pose a couple and a group fast, and effectivley

6. There are some set pieces that you can practice first, and some classic mistakes to avoid

My turn to stick my oar in.
Your doing a wedding for friends.
Good for you.
Your charging them money. Ok

If you happen to be unlucky and balls it up, will you give them there money back, or will they sue you for damages?

Can you afford to get sued, and have you got liablity insurance?
This is the type of concern that Pro togs think about when they hear people shooting friends weddings for a decent fee..
I am not having a dig at you, merely voicing the thought process of a Pro when they read threads like this one.

Give you all credit for being brave enough to shoot a friends wedding.
I hope you do an awesome job, and make the B&G very happy.

Humour's better...thick skin just makes you store all the vitriol and resentment up til at last you snap without warning, climb a clock-tower and take pot-shots at passers-by with a bolt-action hunting rifle...

Usually a 30.06...

You all made your points and I am not going to do the wedding nor post on this forum that is the end of it. NO tantrums just a decision, plain and simple.
As I mentioned before, thanks to all the feedback and info....good luck to you all.

enough is enough...why are you still going at it...and I need to grow up? Stop it now...you made your point already...

That promise didn't last long! Glad you had second thoughts and are staying with us - lots to learn.

It's an online conversation - you're not the only one here...

Damn, I missed it...but I was stuck watching Germany's Next Top Model with Heidi Klum and some dopey French fashion-tog who had all the contestants getting covered in mud somewhere in the SoCal desert...fun stuff...

shame he hasn't got enough posts to offer his camera up for trade against a rifle & scope on here

easier & faster target aquisition i guess

how about if you have a wonky eye?
one eye locked on the present target & the other one searching for the next :gag:

Don't need a wonky eye for that! Ask any Apache gunship pilot (of which I'm not) :P

good point although there is a fair amount of electronic help going on there including prioritising targets based on perceived threat etc

awesome machines

Ahhh they're all poofs...sat in a titanium armour bathtub and swanning about pretending to be 'special' all day while the rest of us grovel in the sand in 60C temps carrying 80lbs of kit...

Nsmall, It is flattering when a friend asks you to cover their wedding because they like your photography. But it is also wrong of them to put the pressure and responsibility to an in-experienced wedding togger.

If I was going anywhere near a warzone I'd want to be in either the most armoured thing going, or the furthest away. :D

Me too :)

Old saying good to live by...

Going to a fist fight? Make sure it's against a kid. If a man, take a knife. If he's got a knife, take a gun. If he's got a gun, be somewhere else :D

Why anyone would want to join a bunch to go to fight when the other side has tanks & worse I'll never understand - but I'm glad some do for all our sakes

They can't really can the enemy and 'immediate' threat when they're sat a few miles away hovering behind a row of trees can they?

I will be leaving the site so there is no need for anymore responses, but thanks for taking the time.

You all made your points and I am not going to do the wedding nor post on this forum that is the end of it. NO tantrums just a decision, plain and simple.

Plus you've sent a message to site staff asking for your account to be closed, which we don't do by the way ;)

As Hacker has already said, you've actually been offered some good advice in this thread. If you choose to leave that's your choice. However, if you decide to stick around try adjusting your posting style. There are a lot of people here willing to help, but no one responds well to having their advice thrown back in their face :nono:

i took a load of pics at a friends wedding last year (pretty much a year ago exactly) just as something to try as he had a Pro there for the official shots.
well there i was full of confidence & ready to go.....................

most of my pics were rubbish :shake:
he was burst shooting most shots which at the time i thought stupid!
well only until i got home & realised just how often people blink!
you'd think i was trying to shoot Claude Greengrass :bonk:
the more of every shot you have the more chance you have of getting everyone with eyes open
also the light outside was very difficult with bright sunshine & a lot of shadows & i wasn't happy with most of those either :shake:

if he'd been paying me i would have been too ashamed to take the money & it certainly showed me there is a Lot more to decent wedding photgraphy than just pointing the camera & taking the pics :)

Shame...he had potential, that one...

all you need to beat somebody good at shooting those targets is a bulletproof watch :bonk:

i think the OP's gone Pte Pyle on us!

" this is my rifle. there are many rifles like it but this one is mine............"

Just out of interest - and please be serious - did anyone else think my initial response was OTT...?
I keep re-reading it and still can't see why he took such offense...

Maybe it's a language problem...especially if he was a Septic...

already told the OP in my first post in this thread that it was just pointing out the inevitable

guess what? you were right

we could have another "chip-in" & buy him some thicker skin or a sense of humour?
