Yes
Just wanted some input on this.

Is it better to have packages or a set price?

I know for me it would be easier to have a set price but do you think people expect to pick from a different packages/?

I personally think that in this day and age you need to be as flexible as possible.

Every Tom, Dick & Harry with a digital camera seems to think they can do weddings now .... Prices have never been cheaper .... :rules:

I am very keen to do this as well.

I was at my cousins wedding on saturday and her photographer cancelled and left her with no one.

Luckie I was there and I rattled off some shot and they turned out really well.

I thought I was going to be nervious but I was ok. Thinking about learning more and then maybe shadowing a photographer during a shoot.

I have another wedding coming up soon that I have asked to take some pics at, so hopefully they will be as good as my last ones.

People like to have some idea of prices from the website/advertising etc. etc.
We put start prices for our various packages on the website/literature,
then go into more detail when we go out to see clients. It really depends on what the client wants.

Just dont price yourself at the very bottom of the market.:gag:
As has been said, weigh up the competition too, having a look at their sites/advertising may give you some idea of whats popular in your area.
For instance , around yer, we mostly sell more traditional packages, with a lot of the posed ,shotlisted photographs, and not so much reportage/arty stylee.
It depends what you want to offer too. If you want to stick with just one set package, or offer some choice.
But as hypnotic says, you have to be flexible and give the customer what he/she wants. If you dont cater to market need, you wont get the work. Or only the stuff that doesnt pay much.

I am at the low price range do you think this is bad.?
I make enough out of it to satisfy me

Its fine doing the bottom end of the market, thats where a lot of the work is.
Just dont try and undercut everyone. If you look TOO cheap, people may stay away.
Albums, just prints, or cd/dvd? presentation is important, even at the bottom end of the market.

Cool.

All advice taken on board.

All my works coes through word of mouth so its all good.

thanks everyone for your time

I tend to have a range of packages to try to cover as much of the market as possible.

Nothing wrong as such as the low end of the market, although it has been a bun fight in recent times of people undercutting each other, and the ameturish approach of some at that end of the market, has meant some couples have been left woth awful photographs, if any at all. Too many stories out there of disappointed couples. So I charge higher in the range with guarenteed quality, and let customers decide for themselves, whether it is worth the gamble of going cheap as chips for what is supposed to be a milestone in their own lives, after all.
Others like to play the market, they may like your pics, but want you to price match cheapo charlie down the road. My advice to them always is 'go ahead, make Charlie's day.'
When it comes to quality I am afraid I am awful snob, and some couples simply get the poor quality photography they deserve, by making all kinds of unreasonable demands. Even photographers need to eat. We all have a different approach certainly, but by making your photography too cheap, you not only cheapen your own product, but end up unwittingly funding the couples extravagant holiday/honeymoon as well.
So I have different packages, and have flexibility around those, if I like a couple, I will bend prices to enable a booking, but I don't give it away and nor should anyone else.

I am getting into baby and child photography and although it isnt weddings, im also worried if i should charge a set price or packaged. I've taken on board the advice here too, its all good :)xx

You have to show that you value your work while at the same time being competitive. That´s the difficulty for some. One website actually stated prices but then in a round about way stated that they will work for any price you wanted, the way they worded it made it sound desperate. I like to offer packages at set prices but give the option for flexibility.

Not sounding desperate for the work and showing you value your work is the key.

It is really tricky cause the average price in my area is three to four times what i charge.

I really do not want to charge that much as i cant justify it.

I still dont really know which way to go maybe just simplify my packages
