Edit My Images
Yes
Hello everyone,

New to digital photography so this is a great site to hopefully learn..

I am in the process of creating a railway related online shop so that people can buy & download digital images from it for personal use.

My plan is to scan my collection of 35mm slides (2,000+) and then "edit" to improve etc. I then want to upload these images as "thumbs" to the site so that customers can view a decent image before purchase etc.

The existing scanned files are large so I understand that I will need to reduce their size when I upload to the site.

Question:- What is the best size / pixels etc (no knowledge on this at all) to resize and upload them so that they can be viewed comfortably, but when downloaded will be acceptable to the purchaser for printing (i.e. similar size / quality to the original)?

Please excuse my complete lack of knowledge on this but trying to learn.

Thanks in anticipation :help:

Hi, Welcome to tp.
The images to view on a screen will need to be changed to 72dpi and resized to no more than 1000px wide. I personally would watermark them so the couldn't be copied direct from screen. To print I would suggest that you email the full resolution image to the purchaser.

hope this helps a little.

The trouble with emailing full resolution copies would be that then you have potentially lost all control of your image and the customer would have full sized file from which they could sell prints etc.

JAlbum has an option (using Turtle) to accept orders via PayPal or Google pay, never used this feature myself.
Presumably you have to watch your Paypal account and fulfil the orders by whatever means, there is an option to use Fotomoto, but (I believe) this only works in the US of A.

Thanks everyone for this information.

I have sorted the issues of illegal copying & also payment method etc.
The main problem I have is this:-

E.G. A scanned file from one of my 35mm slides is uploaded by me to the shop and is now shown as a thumbnail. The potential interested party views this and this (hopefully) downloads a file for a small fee for private use only.
Terms & Conditions dictate this.

I want to know what "size" do I upload the digitised file to the site without making it too big but suitable for viewing (i.e. a thumbnail). Also when the customer wants to download the file how can I ensure that they automatically get a larger suitable file for printing say 7 x 5 (in old money). Is this possible?

Sorry to be vague on this but I am new to digital and can't yet grasp file sizes / pixels etc....

To be honest, given the state of your web skills, I would look at using an off the peg package like Zenfolio or SmugMug.

You upload the original photo and they sort out the resizing for you. Whether that be for thumbnails or various sizes of digital file.

Given the size of your archive, I'd plump for Zenfolio because most of their packages have unlimited storage.

Mark,

Thanks for your direct honesty, you are right.
I will investigate to two suggestions. :)
