Went to visit our eldest daughter this afternoon about 2.45pm and couldn't get back to our village. There was a JCB on the little bridge trying to hold it down from being swept away by flood water. We had to find another way home. After parking the car we could hear engines rumbling outside our back garden. Went to investigate and was horrified to find that whilst we were out, a 3ft wall of water had travelled from a holding pool 5 miles away at the top of a hill which crashed through one village and then ours. at the point nearest our bungalow, 15 feet from our back gate - the water crashed through the hedge and took out the community centre car park full of cars and lifted them and all the cast iron recycling vessels and piled everything in the corner up against the bus shelter. The pub, a row of cottages and the old post office was completely flooded up to their window sills. The fire engines were pumping the water out and the BBC camera man and reporter went into one of the houses.
What I was amazed with, there was no flood when we got back - just all the mess and tidal marks etc. Apparently, the water just crashed through and out the other side. ......and where was I when we needed some photos????
