We Missed the Village Crisis....

Went to visit our eldest daughter this afternoon about 2.45pm and couldn't get back to our village. There was a JCB on the little bridge trying to hold it down from being swept away by flood water. We had to find another way home. After parking the car we could hear engines rumbling outside our back garden. Went to investigate and was horrified to find that whilst we were out, a 3ft wall of water had travelled from a holding pool 5 miles away at the top of a hill which crashed through one village and then ours. at the point nearest our bungalow, 15 feet from our back gate - the water crashed through the hedge and took out the community centre car park full of cars and lifted them and all the cast iron recycling vessels and piled everything in the corner up against the bus shelter. The pub, a row of cottages and the old post office was completely flooded up to their window sills. The fire engines were pumping the water out and the BBC camera man and reporter went into one of the houses.

What I was amazed with, there was no flood when we got back - just all the mess and tidal marks etc. Apparently, the water just crashed through and out the other side. ......and where was I when we needed some photos????

Poor neighbours:(

Jees it's all hapening where you are, hope there is no damage to your place.
It must be terrible to have your house flooded.

We were extremely lucky. It missed the end of our garden by 15-20 feet. No one saw it coming, and when it did it came as a 3 foot wall which crashed into everything in it's way. In the village, we have 2 huge Green cast iron garden waste enclosed skips and 3 large bell shaped bottle recycling containers. They were lifted and tossed to the other side of the car park. The cars are in a mess. I walked over to one and it was full of mud. I think our neighbours are still in shock.

We always thought our property was well high enough to escape any flood. This was a wake up call as it was a bit too close.

Lucky escape

Wow! scarey story Gilly, glad you escaped unscathed, but you're right.... just shows how close you are to danger at any time. :(

Photos of the aftermath would've done as well. ;)

Glad to hear your house was alright! The power of rushing water is really quite amazing.

I'm glad you're ok and it missed you, the footage on tv has been terrible and you've got to feel so sorry for the victims'

Thats a little too close for comfort! Glad your OK

Just seen some of the pictures on the Welsh news of the aftermath in your area. looks scary. glad you are ok

I have just seen some awful photos of the village as it was happening. They are going to be put on disk and I will post them up for you to see. Also heard that a much loved labrador from the house opposite us was swept away, along with hundreds of chickens and pheasant chicks from the hatcheries nearby. A few cats and large livestock disappeared too.

One of my work colleagues had her new (less than 12 months) Clio tossed about and landed on top of another vehicle - all wrecked.

The villagers have spent the last 5 years winning planning appeals to create a bowling green. It was finished last year with the green looking like a velvet carpet. I will go down and photograph it for you tonight. The marquee is all torn down with furniture everywhere, and the green... well it is full of debris.

Watch this space later. For those who watched the Welsh BBC News yesterday, the lady being interviewed is my neighbour of about 50-75 yards - their property was full of sewage and are still hosing the internal walls down.

So sad.

At least you have water!!! We haven't and won't for at least another week. Sommat pongs around here

OHh goodness me sounds like I left as the end of the earth started! I'm glad for your narrow escape and my prayers are with your neighbors.

I wouldn't advise a group hug - not until I can have a shower......

Whilst everyone was buying up the last of the water, I dashed to the cash n carry and bought beer :)

I can't stop thinking about the cats that have been washed away.

So sorry to hear of all your village woes Gilly ... ... always hard to imagine what everyone is going through at such times ...

Hope everything gets sorted in the end and you, and everyone else who has suffered/is suffering get back some normality soon ... ;)

:p

As promised, some during the flood taken by a neighbour and the after shots were taken this evening.

You can see in the last photo our home and in the background are the distinctive Green recycling skips. I roughly drew the line the water reached. See what I mean, a bit of a close call.

By the way, the missing labrador was recovered 3 miles away in the sewage treatment plant. His body was brought back and buried in the owner's garden. They are so upset.

Now for the big clean up.

You were so lucky, that was so close
I feel sorry for the others though, must be horrible to get flooded out.

oh my goodness...this flooding is so scary....glad you are safe! What an awful thing to be living through :(
