WBMT.....What baffled me today

Was talking to a local councillor at our paddling club bash at the weekend, and mentioned the number of “homeless”.
Now your usual homeless person tends to be a bit grimy, dirty fingernails, clothes that look like they need bining not just-need washing likely has thier worldly poessions in a threadbare bag. These”homeless” all look like they have just put on the clothes from yesterday, clean, no processions. He said that they had an issue with minibuses dropping off groups of people who then just find random places to sit and beg and then someone comes along takes the cash and gives them drugs.

There is a local guy here complete with the requisite dog, that sits outside the local supermarkets, there are 4 within walking distance of each other.

I'd occasionally buy him a coffee and a hot pie and something for the dog, especially if it was cold / wet.
That all stopped when, one day, I saw him pack up and leave, and get into a newly new Merc.

Reminds me of the Big Issue seller on the steps of a railway station I passed through regularly. One day at around 5pm when I was on my way home I saw him pack up his stuff and get into a waiting taxi......

I saw someone the last 2 times on my shop - looked dirty, no legs, buying just beer (at 830am) - Would have put my mortgage on him being homeless. But he was coming out of Waitrose with premium lager (cant remember, maybe Moretti)

WBMT... a letter came - could tell it was from my Aunt & Cousin by the writing. Card shaped with something in. thought it could be a Halloween card or something as they like to send cards.

No...

... Christmas card and small cards/vouchers for the kids. Yes, on Nov 2nd!!! They were concerned about the postal strikes so wanted to make sure they got here in time! Oh, and they live 8 miles away!!

When I had a dog there were dog biscuits in all my jacket pockets, so when down the town when I passed one of the ’homeless’ with a dog I would give a biscuit and a pat, one asked ”what about me?” I replied “ you want a biscuit, fine, but whilst you can afford to smoke and have a mobile phone you get nothing else” I won’t repeat his answer but he still got nothing.

Diesel car & van owners who sit parked with their engines running.... why? You are wasting fuel, polluting the atmosphere.... why?

I am not anti-diesel, we have owned several diesels (& have a diesel motorhome now) and I have never had a problem turning the engine off when I parked......

I walked past a row of cars in our local supermarket car park this morning and there were 3 of them, idling......

yes agree our next door neighbor had a visitor who left their big Audi four wheel drive thing running unattended for at least 10 minutes while she was chatting at the door
someone could have easily just got in and drove it off

Trains sit in the station with multiple engines idling, buses in terminus the same, and often poorly serviced belch black reek when accelerating, daily, there’s a good place to start.

Yes, that's quite common although do tend to ring the bell here. If I'm own my own, I'm usually upstairs and I answer saying "I'm on my way down". It takes me quite a while to get there so they're usually long gone by the time I get there. Had a surprise the other day when I opened the door and the guy was stood there, waiting to hand me the package!

Read somewhere that Amazon policy is now for courier to knock and then leave parcel on doorstep, not wait for door to be answered. Assume the benefit to amazon is more parcels delivered/lower delivery cost vs number of parcels lost from door steps. Some of our Amazon deliveries use the no door knock method, first we know of delivery is an email saying parcel has been left in safe place.

Yeah, I've had that on occasion. It's a ring doorbell so you can hardly miss the bloody thing yet some still just tap the knocker!

I know, and I don't mind that, except if I'm not in, and they then ignore the designate safe place
But as above, this guy never even knocked, and somehow managed to evade the "live" doorbells.
All I can think of he must have walked up the adjoining drive.

That sounds like a plan!
I must admit, I've considered taking mine off. Or at least putting a screw through it ( it's quite a large ornate thing)

We have a very effective door knocker but on the few occasions a delivery driver has knocked they bang/tap on the door itself and that is not as audible in the house.

And that's the other thing, they should update their PDA's ( or what ever they use these days)
From parcel handed to resident, to Parcel dumped on door step, ( in all weather) and left, before I knew if anyone was in or not.

I have reported/complained a few times via Amazon chat and it has worked but I surmise driver churn is large and bad practices get passed on by someone perhaps even the team leader who is supposed to imbue best practice!

People seem to have a thing about being overtaken. It's common to find someone driving at 45 on a major road (national speed limit, wide and excellent vision) only for them to start racing me if I try to overtake.

Phone use, no indication while using the left lane of a roundabout to go right etc..

There have been some significant changes over that time regardless of improved or not of driving standards.
The introduction of the driving test in 1935 and as the graph shows the period of suspension during ww2 and then the resumption in 1946 and all the added addition to the test over that period.
The introduction of the MOT in 1960 again with all the added addition to the test over that period.
Cars have become safer over the years i.e. the introduction of compulsory seatbelts in 1968 and the that a law requiring all drivers and front seat passengers to wear their seatbelts in 1983 and all the changes since, NCAP in the 1990's ect..
People general awareness of vehicles is likely much better now with many more on the roads than it was even in the 60's and 70's when I was growing up and playing in the streets and certainly better than the 20's, 30's, and 40's.

Things like brakes and suspension have improved greatly also, meaning that modern cars are more stable (in general) although the "Barry Boy Racers" manage to put cars on their roofs with ease...
