WBMT.....What baffled me today

I started drinking Pastis (a Pernod rival) when I was 14! I was staying at a hotel in Cannes and every afternoon would sit in the lobby lounge after coming from the beach. I saw others ordering this drink, which I thought was a non-alcoholic fruit drink due to it being cloudy. So one day I asked for one. Nobody questioned my age! It became a daily ritual for the rest of the holiday. My French host family didn't bat an eyelid. This was back in 1966

Yip. French schools were also quite relaxed about children drinking limited amounts of wine or beer - often provided by their parents - in their canteens at lunchtime until the mid 1950s, when this was restricted to children over 14 with their parents consent. The practice was eventually abolished though.

Would you bloody believe it?
Rain forecast for today, a couple of showers on and off.
So I topped up the pond, and watered the Bonsai's.
As nothing of any note fell.

I put the hose away, and 10 mins later there was ( and still is) a river running down the road !

Yeah I know my fault :D

No, it's ours. We were out in Mrs Nod's MX-5 with the roof down... Luckily, the traffic lights turned red just as the rain started so I got the roof up before it started to persist down.

When I had my MG Midget, we actually practiced getting the hood up without getting out of the car, so we could do it really quickly. I did dare to take the roof off one Sunday and just go out with the tonneau cover. I never did it again!

Mrs Nod's old (Mk 2.5) MX-5's hood was a LOT faster than the current hard top. The old, manual one took about 5 seconds to put up or down but the hard top is closer to 15. Still a lot quicker than my old Mk 1 Sprite!

Can't you put the hood up on the move? I raise/lower the hood on my S2k up to about 15mph.

With the top down rain usually doesn't come in until you slow right down or stop, I've driven in quite heavy rain and only got went when slowing down or stopping.

My first soft top was a Midget. I found the soft top a pain as the studs usually didn't line up properly and it was usually a bit of a fight to get everything done up. The fiddliest I've had was a Lotus Elise but at least everything lined up.

Unfortunately not. It has to be at a standstill in neutral, possibly with the handbrake on or else it shouts at me and stops operating! The XK8 would go up or down at up to 10 MPH IIRC.

Now I'm majorly forget full but how did someone leave this behind ? Wouldn't you notice ? I live in the sticks and this is about 1 mile further into the sticks ? Nikon point sand shoot on my dog walking adventures.

WHEEL.JPG

A spare left (out of the way) along the way in readiness for a puncture event???

PS but it is a huge tyre......maybe to hold the bridge up and got washed out............................................... :D :exit:

Missing the QR spindle so maybe that broke and he/she carried the rest away and was coming back for the wheel shortly.

The Honda is not supposed to operate on the move but it’s a popular mod to remove the speed relay wire from a handy socket and just click the handbrake one notch to get it to operate.

IIRC the MX-5 has to be in neutral as well as have the handbrake on and to be at a standstill. They REALLY don't want you to put it up (or down!) when moving!

Your probably right ! it was 24 inch so most likely teens bike ! Good thinking. While I was there I saw a woman on horse back with another horse in tow maybe she forgot the rider !

This really did baffle me.

This morning, we went into the breakfast room of a pub/hotel in Penrith after travelling down from NE Scotland. Sitting at an adjacent table were 4 men..in their late 30's early 40's and an older man who looked to be about 60. An odd group.I was unable to understand what they were saying . At another table in this small breakfast room were two girls..late teens, and two men who, I was later told by one of the staff, was dad and his dad. I was unable to understand what any of them were saying either, bar the odd word. I say any of them because the girls said nothing whatsoever. The pattern of speech was strange too. Spoken in almost staccato. Quite soon after my wife and I had sat down at our table three of the four men together left. The 60 year old man stood there talking to 'the dad'. His father said little. This 60 year old was very smartly dressed, shirt and slacks and wore what were clearly expensive black, shiny pointed shoes. My wife said, afterwards, that his hair was very well groomed, too He had an aura about him. I was unable to understand a single word he said. I wondered if it was Italian...a dialect in Italy maybe. The 'dad' was the one speaking to him and I wondered how the heck he understood the older man...lol. The 'dad' said.."we pay £2000 council tax" I also picked up "8 hours and horse boxes"". 8 hours travelling,I assume. Those were the only words I understood in a conversation that went on for 15 minutes.. Who on earth were these people ? I was so intrigued with listening to them that when my wife said something about the huge very old map of Cumbria on the wall next to us I very quietly asked her not to talk. The horse boxes bit struck a chord. Outside in the parking area was a Range Rover that had, what appeared to be a new horse box attached. The vehicle looked new,too and had a personalised number plate. Another vehicle was a Land Rover Discovery with 2022 plates.

Asleep in the conservatory were 4 young men..about 18-20 years old. The 60 year old man left and shortly afterwards the family. Not long after we left the breakfast room to go up to our room just as the two girls came down. I was determined to hear them speak so I made a comment about how great the breakfast was and the food in general and they both smiled and agreed in nicely-spoken clear english. The 'dad' followed them a moment later so I waited at the bottom of the stairs as they were narrow. The building is early 18th century. He smiled and said thank you in crystal clear english. I asked a member of staff who they were. Turns out they're Romani/Travellers and were en-route to the famous annual Appleby Horse Fair. Appleby-in -Westmorland. They'd booked into the hotel for years and had already booked for next year. I mentioned the expensive vehicles and the staff member said when they pay they open their wallets and they're stuffed with bank notes. With hindsight I really ought to have asked the 'dad' about their 'dialect'. They seemed different people when they spoke to me.I'm sure he woudn't have taken offence epsecially if I'd said I was fascinated. The elder of the two girls wore a large wooden cross around her neck. Many, it seems, are Roman Catholics

https://www.nationalgeographic.co.u.../traditions-old-and-new-at-appleby-horse-fair

After they had left so had the Range Rover and horse box and Land Rover. One of the 4 young men woke up and came to the reception and he spoke to me. They had come up from London overnight and arrived before the place opened at 8.00am. I detected a hint of Irish and asked if he and his friends were going to Appleby..Yes. The two men in the breakfast room had no hint of Irish in their speech.I've dug around a bit and it seems they speak Shelta/Cant so other than their own don't underdstand what they're talking about but I can't a Youtube on it. A copy/paste from Wiki

Shelta is a language spoken by Rilantu Mincéirí, particularly in Ireland and the United Kingdom. It is widely known as the Cant, to its native speakers in Ireland as De Gammon, and to the linguistic community as Shelta

Like most people we've had travellers call at the house wanting to do the drive and us ,too...lol and they've had Irish accents. Not these people.

WBMT?
Well actually the last few days.
I've been looking at getting a more modern car.
No real preference at the moment, I'm checking most makes and most variants, on the likes of Auto trader.
Its a struggle to find something that matches the performance and handling of my current one.
(or even get close, granted there are some though)
And even those with much lower power are at least twice the price of my current insurance.
But that's all by the by.

Now this may not come as a surprise to a lot of people, but its baffling to me.
( being old Skool)
Many don't have a water temperature gauge or dipstick, or both.

Some temperature gauges are apparently accessible through the multiple pushing of buttons on the screen pad.
And the reason its hidden is the it varies a lot, and the car management system takes care of it.
I like to see what its doing, a sudden rise in temperature is usually an indication of a problem.

Dipsticks, apparently the engine will let you know when its low, via warning lights, or message on a screen.
I like to know what the oil level is before setting out on a long journey not have the car tell me miles from home that its low.

My Mini Clubman has both an electric dipstick and a temp gauge which you can pull up if you want to. The temp gauge just says Cold --- OK --- Hot. The dipstick also gives you a level, but you have to be on flat ground, so I have to check it on the roads outside my house as I have a sloping drive.

Depending on how old you want your replacement car to be, most newer cars are far more fuel efficient and have more power. Very few, except basic models, are naturally aspirated these days, turbos and blowers rule (some Audi/VW's have one of each!!)

I don't care about that mine does err not a lot to the gallon :D

and have more power.
Very few do 0-60 in six seconds with a BHP of around 220 V6 unmapped, and naturally aspirated.
Not really into turbo's TBH
Edited to add. Granted there are a few, some ST3's some BMW's etc. But I'm not really a fan of either. ;)

I thought my 69 plate Ford Kuga was novel with its electric handbrake!

But IMO I find it odd that the water temp and oil level have 'gone electronic'. I suppose in the case of the water temp it is just the sensor being monitored digitally rather than on a binnacle filling gauge. But oil, I am with you nothing can beat a physical dipstick......by all means provide a digital sensor but don't dispense with the dipstick :)

IIRC there are others.
All this 'lectric stuff leaves me cold TBH.

I remember many years ago, with, I think Merc, and their artics, had electronic gear changes, a bit like auto but more precise.
While I was working for Wincanton, they got a new fleet of these things, someone put their truck through the truck wash at the end of the shift,
as required by the company, and killed all the gears. no one else got to wash their unit that day :D

The dipstick is behind the steering wheel in many cases ;).
I thought that was the nut that was capable of disassembling the car in one foul swoop? :D

With the Mini, you warm the engine up, and use the touchscreen to open the menu and select "check oil". Anyway, most cars have a warning system for low oil, it's called "knocking"

You should have heard the noise my 5 pot Focus ST made when it dumped all of its oil..... :ROFLMAO:

Why foodbanks are so picky, no big boxes of cereal?
Got two new bottles of Head and Shoulders, about a fiver each to buy, no thanks.

At Christmas I went to drop some mince pies and a pack of beer in, again no thanks.
So those in need can't have anything festive or wash their hair, bonkers.

I bet Wincanton had strong words with their Mercedes supply manager!

Oh you wag, you........ ;)

Yup, that nut is always the biggest fitted(?) to any motor vehicle with a steering wheel........but as for how dirty or bad smelling is perhaps another type of WBMT ;)

Thankfully I've never done anything like that, wrecked a couple of gear boxes though :D

I was only there for a couple of weeks, so I never got to hear the out come, but I guess he did :D

I think you being a tad too judgemental.

I surmise with boxes of cereal and similar it is fairer to all if the box size(s) are all the same......and doubt they would have facility or situation to sub divide larger volumes.

The shampoo, I have no idea......likewise mince pies???

But as for alcohol......again I surmise that their license to operate excludes the acceptance of alcoholic products.

Our local supermarkets have lists of products required/requested by food banks to put on the collection bins.

Just my opinion & view.

PS some that use food banks may have alcohol addiction issues and the food bank is not there to be an arbiter.....another reason to exclude booze???

Fair enough about the beer, but couldn't they give large families a big box of cereal?
Seems crazy that I have to just pour the shampoo down the plughole.
Don't get it at all, seems bonkers that they won't dish out useful donated items.

WBMT?
Karen on a local FB group has reported that firstly, she had an argument
over a parking space,
and then a bit later on that day, a bus driver gave her the finger because she wouldn't let him pull out.
Karen is now worried about driving as all that has affected a mental health.
(lots of are you OK hun comments followed)

However, if this affected her mental health, I think Karen should do everyone a favour, including herself and stop driving.
Am I an insensitive [PLEASE DON'T TRY TO BYPASS THE SWEAR FILTER]?, ( Rhetorical :D )

There’s an old, old joke about the bus driver who pulled out to avoid a child …

I don't have a FB account, but I do like the Karen cat memes. Of course, I like cats and the name reminds me of someone who would fit the role perfectly ... ;)

Similar incident to a artic tanker at site I worked at. Parked up and switched engine off to weigh in, after weighing in could not select any gears. Turned out to be a software issue, driver and then support engr was on the phone to Germany for hours before fixed..

Have a good holiday. We chatted about Skiathos when you went last time ...must be three years ago... It's a place we'd go back to. We stayed a few miles from the capital Skiathos town. They didn't put much thought into that name did they :D

People using word or phrases that they don't truly understand the meaning off.

There have been a few comments on the local news hub ( FB) lately
Where they are disagreeing with or complaining about the local council & councilors,
And referring to them as "Bloody nounces" or p****'s.

They are leaving themselves wide open to defamation of character, litigation, surly?
