Right guys, as it says but with certain provisos. It needs to have a decent zoom range - all the ones I have found are crap.

It isn't for me, but a friend has seen my pictures and wants something equivalent. I am using a Nikon P7800 and the image quality is lovely, it doesn't matter that it is slow to download each shot, that doesn't bother me at all so it is a non-existent problem. I use mine out in the open, not in a waterproof case, and it has survived quite well - I did kill one when wave came right over my head! I was in my waders at about waist height, the camera was inside the waders hanging round my neck...it didn't survive that complete immersion in sea water. :p Wet hands with fish slime and the like don't bother it at all though.

My other option is a G12 in dedicated diving housing - I had this and that is what I was using, but the zoom range is crap, not enough long end ad not enough wide end..the P7800 beats it at both ends, but they don't make a good waterproof box for it.

So, he is after a compact of the kind of quality of the P7800, but one which has been watersportserised.......anyone any ideas please?

Fank Yoo.

OH - and before you go down the usual photographers pitfall of worrying about QUALITY, he is a crap photographer, so normal compact quality is plenty good enough. He had a Fuji - the pictures were lacking in contrast and generally just s***.

I've got a Pentax Waterproof compact and the photos quality is awful, though oddly the actual underwater shots seem better than those on dry land. But in my household it falls into the category of much better than nothing at all.

Without knowing the budget or exact usage... Has he thought about the Nikon AW1? I don't know much about them but remember it seeming like an interesting option at the time of release. Looks like it's about £500 with a zoom lens.

My 1AW got dunked from being left out in the sun and sucked in a lungful - drowned. :( Last time I let anyone borrow kit! In future, I'll stick with relatively cheap waterproof cameras like the Git I have now with a waterproof housing. At least then it's only £50 up my shirt when it dies!

As above. I went for the Git1 Pro kit (IIRC!) since it came with the waterproof housing and a selection of mounts in the box. Suits MY needs but probably not your mate's - it's got a fixed wide angle lens - no zoom.

He is asking about the Pentax K50 - anyone any experience of it? I have never had a Pentax anything.
