Wanting a second lens for my D5000 but am confused!

Im new to DSLR and have recently bought a D5000. Now i was told when buying it i will be restricted with lens choice due to the body not having AF. Anyway ive been looking at the Tamron 70-300 lens at Jessops http://www.jessops.com/online.store/products/66332/show.html which is stated as an AF lens. To me that would mean i would have to focus manually which i'd rather do without but then it also states that it has Auto Focus built into the lens. I thought only AF-S lenses had this? Ive just ramng to query and the guy said it does have AF in the lens. So my question is does it? Also if it does have they misprinted AF instead of putting AF-S? If it is AF and works with AF on my D5000 whats all the fuss about?

The specification clearly shows the lens has a built in motor so will autofocus on your camera.
 
It's the one you need (with the motor built-in), but do a bit of shopping about, you can get it for up to £50 less with a bit of hunting ;)
 
Oh yeh, i know its available cheaper but just used that site for reference as i bought the camera there and noticed they had it in a bundle with the d5000. So now thats solved why is it stated an AF lens and can anyone clear up my confusion?

Tamron don't follow the makers lens designation policy, all AF lenses are branded just as that, they do however with nikon lenses use the BIM designation to indicate the lens has a built in motor and so will work with bodies without built in AF drive motors.

Most lens makers do this.
For instance nikon has AF/S and VR lenses
Canon has USM and IS lenses

Sigma designates such lenses as HSM and OS for the Canon and Nikon
Tamron designates them USD and VC for the Canon and adds BIM for the Nikon.
 
Bought my tamron 70-300 from jessops as i got a deal with lens+filter+3yr cover, but i must say i'm not overly impressed with it, especially at full bore but thats on my D40x maybe I will see a improvement when my D90 arrives tomorrow.
 
I've got the 70-300 on my D5000 for some of my work.

Its an awesome lens! Well worth the pennies!
I too was like you, wanting to get a second lens, so i sold my 18-55 replacing with a 18-105, so helps with a walk about camera :)

So now, I have a 18-105mm, and a 70-300.

When you say 70-300 you do mean the Tamron yeh, or the Nikkon VR lens?

I just dont know what to get between the Tamron and the Nikon 55-200 VR! As im new to DSLR and photography on this level i dont even know what i need :lol: I know thats not much help but i think i will be taking pics of most things and havnt got any one favourite topic. I know someone mentioned in this thread that they bought their D5K from this seller so im happy to use them.....if i decide what to choose.

The one thing that concerns me about the Tamron is the lack of Image Stabilisation which i feel i would need especially at the focal length.

Got my 55-200 from that eBay seller this morning. When I've had a play with it I'll put some photos up.
 
It was me that had my D5K from them. I'll echo Flash in the Pan.....has to be the Nikon 55-200VR...lovely little lens, lightweight(very) and good IQ...is kit lens build quality so is mainly plastic but dont let that put you off, I had the non_VR one on my old D40X and it performed very well indeed. Stupidly sold it and the kit 18-55 and bought a Tamron 18-270. VERY quickly sold that and have whats in my sig now.

lol, I did the thread but it would only let me post 6 photos at a time so cut and paste before you replied :lol:

I'm going to Whipsnade tomorrow so will be taking plenty then, providing the weather is ok.

Hmmm...screws in to the front of the lens like a filter. For 12.95 I can guess how good the optics are....might be worth a punt I guess but personally speaking I wouldnt bother mate.:shake::)

What about these? I believe theyre called tubes? Sorry but im just trying to take it all in at the moment. Would i beable to get these and and use them with my 18-55 and incoming 55-200mm lens to produce macros as would be produced on a standalone macro lens. I appreciate a standalone macro would be better but this is a way for me to shoot macro with the lenses i have for now until i have the money for a standalone lens.

The extension tubes will certainly work....they are basically just 'empty' tubes with no glass elements that change the focal length of the lens you have fitted to the camera.

So that would enable you to take macro pics yeh? I will in tim eby a dedicated lens but for the mean time this seems like an affordable option neilos. Cheers bud.

Edit... you need another part btw as shown in a review on Amazon.
Note you'll also need the adaptor tube LA3 if you don't already have it.

Hey Phil,

It says it has a universal mount suitable for 52-67mm filter thread sizes so shouldnt need it. The adaptor is for compact cameras.

Thanks bud, ive went for the Nikon 55-200mm but will consider the TAmron at a later date. Ive just found out a friend has it on his Canon so i'll have a blast of his.

Haha, hi Graham. I'll have a look all the same just to get an idea in real terms the difference between 200 & 300mm.

I got some magnifying filters on ebay.. not bad for a cheapo macro option - think they were around a tenner? am thinking of getting a macro lens but not sure where to start..
