WAMT....what annoyed me today!

Another related issue is tailgating. I try to drive at a sensible distance from the car in front relating to the conditions and the speed. However, some motorist drive within a few inches and expect you to pull over on the basis that if you are not tailgating then you are too slow.

Dave

My mantra.......

"My braking space is not an excuse for you to pull out!"

I have been known to stop on a single carriageway, open the boot, and ask the guy behind if he wanted to get in.... My Dad taught me that one :ROFLMAO:

I understand why but there are too many violent people around now so I try to ease my annoyance by watching Police Interceptors. I saw one where a young driver was tailgating an unmarked police car. So the policemen pulled him over and then discovered the driver was already banned and not insured as well as over the limit for drugs. If he had driven as per the highway code, he would not have been stopped but, as it is, he ended up with a large fine, community service, an extended ban and his car taken off him.

Dave

Agreed.

I try to keep two car lengths from the car in front, so if someone wants to overtake they have a space to get into,

Unfortunately, some people have been known to get silly about others trying to drive with care and politeness.

:headbang:
Did you mean 2 secondsas two car lengths is not a lot

From .gov:

The Highway Code tells drivers to allow at least a two-second gap between you and the vehicle in front on roads carrying faster-moving traffic and in tunnels where visibility is reduced. The gap should be wider as speeds increase. It rises to 2.4 seconds – about 53 metres – when driving at 50mph and 3.1 seconds – or 96 metres – at 70mph.

Furthermore, the gap should be at least doubled on wet roads and increased still further on icy roads.

Room for two cars to insert themselves and leave a sensible gap.

Probably something like 60 - 80 feet, which I think is the distance between the gap arrows southbound on the M5 near Clifton. The main thing is that it's a distance I'm able to stop in, if I see the vehicle in front slam on its brakes.

I wonder if your dad got it from one of the documentaries in which a TV crew tag along with Traffic police.I've never forgotten it.It was quite a few years ago. A lorry drove really close to the back of a Traffic car..an estate, infact and the police driver made comment about it so it was picked up by the TV crew inside the vehicle. The driver put the blue lights on and caused the lorry driver to stop. The officer went to the tailgate and lifted it and then went to the lorry driver and and asked him if there was anything in particular he wanted to see. I thought it was a brilliant move. :D

This makes me more angry rather than "annoyed" but didn't want to give it a thread of its own.

This morning my wife said that she'd try several times to contact the salon where she had an appointment for a pedicure to confirm the time of the appointment She has her hair done there too and the staff are great. They always send a text as a reminder but my wife hadn't received it so she thought she may have got the wrong date. Not wsihing to miss thbe appoiuntment she decided to go there.Upon arrival the salon was closed apart from one female and my wife spoke to her. The saloin was no longer. On Thursday mornin g the staff received an Email stating that from immediate effrect the salon was closed. That was it. They were unable to let customers know. As of today none of the staff..14 hairdressers, two beauticians and two reception staff, have had their due pay for the last month and neither have they received any communication re redundancy.

Our laws covering things like this are so ineffectual.
Apart from the treatment of staff, customers pay deposits etc the day before a business KNOWS they are going bust, and you can do nothing. The following day they can start up again. It's a farce.

Yes..that business of taking customers' money knowing they are about to go into liquidation is really bad. I've tried to find out why it's allowed and only get answers about liquidation. As you say, quite often, after debts have been written off, they re-open under another name.

Look what I've just found and it's dated June 6th. First Link below. About three weeks ago when my wife went to have her hair done she noticed how few products were on the shelf and the lad doing her hair said they were short of stock but he had no idea why. He has a very good reputation and has been taken on by a local salon in the city . The manager is going to "hire a chair" in another saslon in Tewkesbury. 10 miles away. Love the salon is run by three people..a married couple and a third person-the secretary. They seem to have had two salons here. One in Barnwood ,Gloucester where my wife went and one 6 miles away in Cheltenham so very local. The one Cheltenham seems to be still open but, obviously, re the links, there are problems.

Years ago when I was bored at work I calculated the times for the different speeds.
From those I worked out that if you divide the speed by 10 and then halve it you get the number of seconds you should be away from the vehicle in front.
So 50mph becomes 2.5 secs and 70 becomes 3.5 secs. It is a bit cautious at the higher speeds and a bit too close at the lower speeds but is a good guide.

The rules are shown on this page and there do seem to be sanctions that can be applied, if people are prepared to report abuse to the correct authority...

You get anywhere near 50m gap on any modern motorway and white van man will just see it as an invitation to pull out. I think many have forgotten the golden rule of not doing anything to make another vehicle change speed or direction.....

One last annoyance from me today.

I ordered a couple of watches and they came today. Before ordering I was particularly pleased to see that both had conventional watch straps rather than some metal contraption. Anyway. One was fine but the other had a fastening mechanism that I just couldn't initially work out. I thought I'd check the booklet for instructions but of course the strap wasn't covered at all. It took me a good 10 minutes to work out what came apart and how and what didn't and how this contraption works and this is a watch strap. Why? Why do the makers think we want something so convoluted? And this is a watch, something which I think it should be possible to put on and take off with one hand.

Why? Just. Why?

I remembered your post and thought I'd let you know that this morning my wife and I went to the jewellers who tried to fix my 25/30 year old Tissot watch that had a midnight-blue face..I really liked it but it had died. My wife, goes to the jewellers for bits and pieces so they know her. She'd told them of the difficulty we were having with the new Tissot watch with that darned clasp..we even Googled for a Youtube on it ... and they asked her to bring it in. I was going to buy a regular Tissot strap and they cost £80 for the one I wanted. I didn't realise this and I'm sure you don't hence my heads-up. The lass in the shop tried to put it on my wrist and close it but it was really hard to do, so, she suggested she take the clasp off altogether and put the strap back on. I didn't know that could be done. She did that and I now have a regular strap. She wanted no money so we went to M&S and got her some flowers :). She was very happy, I'm delighted because it felt bulky on the underside of my wrist even without being able to close it properly and I've saved £80 and have a normal watch strap, so.. a win-win all round.

It's my sons, he's electric, I prefer my acoustic. I know a few chords and I think I'm Bon Jovi!! He has lessons and is really good. Come next year when we've sorted a few things out, I'll be having lessons also so I'll be rocking out!!
I sold my Fender Strat and Marshall Amp 2 years ago. The Fender was a 1959 re-issue and Shadows Fiesta Red...

Almost always I think RM are excellent but Mrs T once had a text from RM saying a parcel would be delivered later in the day and it could be tracked online.

When the parcel did not appear Mrs T went to the online tracking. It said the parcel could not be delivered because the address was inaccessible.

We live in a terraced house with a completely open front garden and the pavement is about 6 steps from the house!

This one of mine was logged as arriving at the depot at... I forget what time... and the next entry is them being unable to deliver it 10 minutes later. Unless it was strapped to a hypersonic missile this just is not possible.

Yes, I've had a look and the whole complicated clasp assembly will come off very easily and then all it needs is the usual end... sort of a D shape with a prong in the middle. If that makes sense.

Most of my recent watch buys have come with a metal bracelet of some sort but this is by far the most fiddly and so far I haven't found a way to do it one handed. What I have to do is support it all with my knee. What I've been doing is taking the watches in to a kiosk in town and having the metal bracelets replaced with a standard leather / whatever strap.

Two things phased me with this new contraption. The thumb and finger pinch bit in the middle was easy enough to work out but that piece on the far right hand side in my picture was harder to work out as the strap wouldn't go through it, It took me a while to realise that you have to get hold of it and pull it from the curved side to open it.

I do think that it is overly and needlessly fiddly and as I said above, I think putting a watch on should be possible with the use of one hand. I need to get a new strap for another watch so I'll have a think and make my mind up if I want to persist with this one or get something done.

Still got my strat. All white.
The Custom shop Wolfie has gone though.
Blackstar and Vox for me though.

I quite fancy a Harley Benton 'fat' Junior (HB is Thomann's house brand) with a Gibson '59 style fat neck and single P90. It would be just for slide work, but probably quite fun to use.

My strat is SSH with a pearly gates in the bridge. Never been a fan of P90s, not in my hands anyway.
Used Thomanns a while back in my Ibanez days. Was never sure how good the HB gear was. Always looks fair kit though.

I bought an Aeolus about 18 months ago, and while not flawless (stainless steel frets were rather scratchy sounding on string bends - not a problem for slide work) it's genuinely nicely built. Plainly not hand crafted, but for about £300 well up with a good Epi. Mine is a more traditional burst than this:

FWIW I still have my MIJ standard strat that I bought new in '89, though it's needed a refret for about a decade now.

My Wolfie had ss frets, I never liked the feel on bends until I started using coated strings, was ok then.

That Aeolus looks nice.

Follow up...

Did a second treatment a few days ago and Mrs Nod has just been out with the "Murder Glove" on a squishin' mishin'. Only found 1 groggy caterpillar and one very dry cocoon. I'll do another spray in a couple of weeks and see what's left when we get home in late June.

Further follow up...

From looking very moth (caterpillar!) eaten before the first treatment, the Box is now looking pretty good. Got plenty of the treatment left for next year so just need to remember to start it in April to prevent the first attacks rather than try to rescue it by "repelling boarders"!

I attacked mine with the pressure washer. No soap, just high pressure water. I've also been putting my coffee grinds there. It seems to be working. The growth is returning and no sign of the pesky caterpillars or their fuzz. Who knows, I may have found a cure?

I spray regularly through the summer ... if you see the blighters you're too late and they will have savaged it again! Prevention is much better than feeding them!

I put my phone on silent when I went to bed last night as I was tired of people calling me early in the morning whilst I was still asleep... This morning I forget to take it off silent so although I've had a quiet day with the land line only ringing once my mobile has a load of voicemails and messages.

A few weeks ago I left my mobile at a friends house and the following afternoon someone was knocking at my door as no one could get hold of me.

Can't people "go dark" for a day any more?

My mobile is set to be silent between 22:00 and 07:00 but that silence is overridden if someone calls twice within (IIRC) 2 minutes.

I'm a bit of a technophobe these days and have no idea if that's possible with my phone but I've thought about it over night, the pros and cons of leaving the phone on or on silent, and on balance I've decided not to put it on silent again except when at church. I'll call the people who called and messaged back today and explain what I'd accidentally done and apologise.

I used to turn my phone completely off but I then started to worry about possible emergencies as modern phones, or at least mine, seem to take an age to turn on and get ready to be used so I started leaving it on but of course then there's the possibility of getting a call when you don't want one.

As I trend to avoid tech these days I didn't know about these other modes and timers.

The best autocorrect yet!
Autocorrect ? I'm on the same page as Alan re tech but it looks like he's just accidentally pressed the 'r' and the 't' keys simultaneously as they're next to each other and he didn't notice.
That's my low-tech take :D

Yup. Likely.

And almost everyone is waaaay past me on tech as for 15 years I've actively avoided it apart from cameras and lenses of course :D Computers and phones have my eyes rolling  and I just switch off. No amount of persuasion or money could get me back there :D

Has anyone else noticed a drop in quality at Amazon? Maybe it's just me and bad luck but I've received a high instance of crap recently.

Latest one.

I ordered a pack of 10 CDR's. I've ordered these before and as in the picture on Amazon they come boxed and in their standard jewel cases with the usual paper/card inserts in the front and back. What I received today was 10 slightly different CDR's in slim jewel cases with no inserts. I've tried to find these on Amazon but I can't find an exact match because of number received. The nearest product is significantly cheaper than the one I ordered. Oh, and these CDR's weren't boxed but instead partly wrapped in a piece of a plastic wrapping from a box of 20 CDR's. This partial wrapping wasn't large enough to cover the 10 CDR's sent and would only cover half of the bundle so had been taped in place on the front and back CD. They bundle was then wrapped in cardboard with open ends and delivered in a plastic bag. When I opened the bag the middle 8 CDR's slid out leaving the first and last to follow with their taped "20 CDR" plastic.

Whoever has packed this has opened a pack of 20 CDR's or just picked 10 individual ones and used part of the ripped plastic wrapper from a pack of 20 to partially cover the 10 they've sent to me.

WTF Amazon?

Going straight back for a refund.
