WAMT....what annoyed me today!

whereas I've been used to Sunday being the 7th day
Same here, lets face it God created the world in 6 days, on the 7th he rested.
I'm pretty sure that's where church going on a Sunday stems from.
(the day of rest)
Yes I know some religions hold Saturday as the sabbath, but the guy was still working..

Whether or not you believe that, Monday is still the 1st day if the week
Sat & Sunday is the week-end (y)

I had the same experience. What a pain. I posted about it on here because I came up against Mrs Jobsworth who had my name on her list but against a different car..I hope when Covid is past, which is why they introduced the system, we can go to the tip as and when. Maybe they won't go back to the old system because quite often there were long queues. Having said that, there were long queues with the new system too. It remains to be seen.
On the surmise that the alternate car you used was not a van and as this was simply to drop rubbish at the official & proper location, yes she comes across a 'jobsworth'. :banghead:

However, perhaps she used to work in airport parking...........................where once booked it is all based on the reg number and woe betide if you don't change the booking in advance ;)

The reg is to check that the car is registered with in the allowable area for that HWRC.
At one time you could tip anywhere, but for a couple or so years they have been cracking down on out of area tipping.

They are trialing the appointment scheme here in West Sussex, At the moment it's not in force at my local tip but you
do have to show proof that you live in the area, but that is a wide area which means those nearby that do have to are driving the 8 or so miles
Cross county tipping hasn't been allowed for years but was never seriously checked, don't know if it is now

Its been like that locally, and all the HWRC's I used to visit in East Anglia, pretty much since the 1st lock down was eased.
People have been kicking off here pretty much since that started, and now the local authority are talking about scraping it.
No idea on East Anglia though.

Ahmed, Shmele and Walter run a bakery and coffee shop, they're firm friends and hard working guys...
  • Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday: all three are in at 4 a.m.
  • Friday morning: Shmele and Walter open up at 4 a.m.
  • Saturday morning: Ahmed and Walter open up at 4 a.m.
  • Sunday morning: Ahmed and Shmele are in at 4 a.m. to light the ovens.
So tolerance and peaceful co-existence make for a seven day bakery and a good prophet profit for all. :naughty: :coat:

I do remember her asking me if I'd booked in advance. I'll just briefly as possible for me..:D reiterate the conversation.

I eventually came within three vehicles from the 'lady' who was wearing a fluorescent jacket and carrying a clipboard. She'd have been well advised to take up the well known 'Fast 800 ' low carb Mediterranean diet. I use the term 'lady' loosely, too. I didn't mind waiting because on my left were several bushes and I was entertained by about 4 Long-Tailed Tits flying in and out. Masters of aerodynamics. After about 10 minutes I was second in the queue and after she allowed the car infront to move on she walked away to the nearby 'office' which was a mobile unit the sort that are used on building sites. After about 15 minutes I decided she wasn't returning anytime soon so I started to move forward. Big mistake. She came out of the unit like a trapdoor spider on sensing prey outside its burrow. "Oi, where are you going ? " she shouted, waving her clipboard in the air at me in a menacing manner as she came to me . "Have you booked ?" "Yes". (I did it online) "Have you got your booking form ?" I did have a related form but not the one she wanted to see because the computer wouldn't print it off. I told her this. It didn't impress her because she gave a great sigh. She looked at the car registration and then checked it against those on her clipboard. "Are you Mr Reynolds ?' Er..No."What's your name, then ?" JohnC6.. I told her.:) She then said "They've f****d up again in the office" I was tempted to ask het which Ladies' college she'd attended. :)This was a stroke of good fortune for me as the exchange became most amiable.."Ok, my darling, on you go" and so I was able to drive on to the skips.

but not the one she wanted to see because the computer wouldn't print it off.
Do a screen capture and print that? Or, last resort if the printer is the problem, photograph the screen on your phone?

I can't exactly recall what the problem was,Richard. I'm sure it was a case of.."Click here to print off your authorisation (whatever) but when I clicked nothing happened.

A while ago I posted about being annoyed that when online I was being bombarded with adverts for JD Sports featuring attractive ladies in skimpy sportwear and underwear despite never buying anything from them or even afaik visiting their website. I suspected and then learned that it's possible for someone elses googling to affect the ads I see, ie. Mrs WW surfing the net and looking for sportsware and this affecting the ads I see.

Things calmed down for a while but yesterday they came back and on multiple websites I read I'm seeing those scantily clad ladies again so I assume Mrs WW has been googling for some new stuff.

I don't know how I'll cope if this keeps happening :D I wonder if she's getting all my camera, lens, watch and car ads :D

The answer is to ditch Google and use Duck Duck Go, a funny name, but with a serious advantage in that it doesn't track you across other sites you visit. I did this about three years ago and I am rarely bothered by the problems you are having.

Aaaaarrggh!!!!!! :banghead:

Stupidly did the software update on my phone and it has stolen my ringtone ... (and sodded about with other things in a very irritating way) and I would really like it back but have no idea how to do it! :(

I used the old Sony Ericsson "musifiola" ringtone because no-one else I know has it, it was nice and loud and I knew it was MY phone ringing.

Does anyone know how I can get it back onto my Samsung Galaxy A10 please?

I googled "musifiola ringtone download" and top of the page listing there is a website that claims to have it to download. Note ~ I didn't click through to the page.

Yes. I've been using Firefox as my browser with Duck Duck Go as the search engine for years. VPNs and TOR are probably overkill for stopping intrusive advertising, but have their place.

I have used Duck Duck but there was something I didn't like but I can't remember what it was. Since getting a new pc I've left it as it came but I could give DD another go.

It annoys me when friends and family tell me to Google somethings. I always tell them, I don't use google for browsing.

I use duck duck go for searching but it's quite often useless and doesn't find what I'm looking for. Google does so I end up using that more than I'd like.

Granted Google has come to dominate the search engine world. Back in the day I recall using Alta Vista and Yahoo.....and some others I can't remember.

Bing as an enforced default search engine on W10 annoys me it has its own annoying aspects.

If there are other ones as capable but worthwhile I would welcome knowing........or have I somehow overlooked previous mentions???

PS a bit like 'Hoover' became synonymous with vacuum cleaners, there are were and are various others to buy/use ;)

It was a clever thing, saying go and google that. People do now suggest that. Not used Goggle in years, got fed up with all the ads. When I want to search for something, I will go and duck it now. ;)

You can replace it with Google or whatever easily.

Doh! as the saying goes "everyday is a school day".

Thanks for the linky :)
Well....it turns out I had already set my SE to Google. But what was & is annoying me was that prior W10 I could set my default 'new tab' to Google.

Yes, I know I can start typing in the URL box to do a Google search once the new tab is opened but maybe I am old school as I like to type something in the search box in the middle of the presented page.

I have done a cursory search for an answer and found that there are some Edge extensions that will allow this to be done.................but why the heck not by Edge settings and/or alternate defaults ~ c'est la vie :banghead:

I think this is becoming the norm now. Firefox still gives you the box in the centre but the text appears in the URL box when you start 'typing'. It bugged me a bit at first but I'm not really aware of it now.

You have to click in the search box to use it. As you say, the default focus in a new tab seems to be the URL box.

I'm not quite sure I'm following you correctly. Firefox displays a search box in the centre of the page with the words 'Search with Duck Duck Go or enter address', but it enters the text in the URL box at the top of the page when I start typing in it. Nothing appears in the search box. Is this the way it's supposed to work now, or am I missing something?

Those little foil seals on milk and other bottles. Often they're ok but sometime I pull the tab and I'm stood with the tab in my hand and the seal is still in place. Or sometimes only the first layer comes off leaving a thin film of plastic still sealing the bottle. Those little glue like plugs on the nozzles of ketchup bottles used to annoy me but thankfully they seem to have stopped using them.

If you do nothing to set the focus and just start typing, the topmost text box (which on a browser is the URL) is where your input will be sent. By clicking in the centre box, your typing will go there. It seems to be a default behaviour copied from Apple's IOS.

Thanks Andrew, but that's the problem. I do click in the search box - in the centre of the page - and start typing. The text simultaneously appears in the URL box but the 'search box' remains blank. This started a month or two ago and I wondered if an update had caused it, or if this is the way it's supposed to work now. I'm at a bit of a loss!

Just to be sure, I've checked Edge, Brave, Firefox, Chrome and the Tor Browser running on Windows 10 Home 10.0.19043. They all work as they should.

I'm typing this on Firefox 93.0 (20210927210923) Installed on: 9 October 2021, 09:05:04 - perhaps check what your version reports?

Now appointment only and cannot book one for the same day :banghead:
Locally it’s been like that since the start of the pandemic. Initially, the waste recycling centres were shut. Then when they opened, you had to book an appointment slot and bring along ID and proof of address. It’s a better system in that queues are quicker and less tailback onto the main road. It’s a pain because you can’t spontaneously chuck things away. Imagine having to book a slot to go to the supermarket or local shops.

WAMT?
Having laid a nice fresh deep layer of mulch on my flower / fern beds,
it seems that every bloody cat in a 50 mile radius is using it as a litter tray ...

Harsh maybe, but it worked.
I've thought of a lot worse things I'd like to do to the cats and their owners in the past. The trouble is there's a law against all of them.

But of course its all my fault, for putting down loose mulch and having small hedges that cats can hide in and ambush birds from..

If you want your garden insulated from the real world, apply for planning permission to cover it over with a glass house.

Oh! Wait a bit...

I can see a problem right there. :naughty:

Not as unpleasant as cats fouling, but I also laid a mulch (forest bark) on one of our borders alongside the driveway, the blackbirds love 'rooting' through it presumably looking for insects , they scatter bits everywhere. I have to sweep the bits off the driveway every other day.

I get that too, well when the cats aren't about, I'm surprised exactly how far they can fling a piece of forest bark!

They make nice hats with them in Australia I believe,

Obviously, but the cats will have noticed that you're showing proper subservience to their status ... this will enhance your karma!
