WAMT....what annoyed me today!

Learner drivers or rather the instructors.

We're on the test route so we get a lot of them, which is ok, everyone has to learn. What's annoying is that they quite often park across our drive and have a chat. I know why they do it, it's because our neighbour always has a car on the front and the learners reverse around it and then they stop and have a chat, blocking our drive. The instructor should IMO get them to pull forward or further back and drill into them that you shouldn't park blocking someones drive. This happens all the time. I've wanted to pull out or in and found the drive blocked so many times and of course they rarely move unless I toot the horn and gesture or knock on the window.

This morning I backed the car down the drive and out onto the pavement to within a few feet of them and did they move? Nupe. I got out and tapped on the window and when he wound it down I asked him to move. He said "Yes" and wound the window back up. Did he then move? Nupe. So I tapped again and said "Can you move please?" "Yes, we're going" he said but still they didn't move. "Well, Go on. I'm waiting." Says I and then.... after a few more seconds off they went.

We're also near a school and of course kids can't walk these days so no one uses the dedicated drop off lane on the main road as it's 120 seconds walk away so they often park blocking the drive and again they have to be asked to move.

And breathe.

Without knowing the configuration of your drive and its relation to the highway.................maybe put up a clear sign (dayglow background?) that says something like:-
" Access required 24/7. Any vehicles blocking access will be logged and notified to the DVLA for causing an obstruction"

PS if as you say the driving instructors are repeat offenders, I believe they have a 'registration body' so perhaps tell the offenders that you will reporting them to that body???

That's an idea. I'll look for repeat offenders and note details... I have complained to the school as have others and they do periodically send a letter home with the kids asking parents to be more considerate. No one uses the dedicated parking lane on the main road though, no one, they all park on the residential street and it's bedlam twice a day.

PS.
One of them said that it's only twice a day and if I didn't like it I should move :D Nice.

Thing is they don't just stop for a few seconds as in the morning they park up and walk their kids to school and maybe have a chat or a fag before heading off and at pick up time there's competition for parking spaces so they start turning up half an hour or more before school ends. So, that could be the drive blocked for 5-10 minutes at drop off and half an hour at pick up time which increases the odds of them getting in my way. If all they were doing was dropping off and picking up and taking just a couple of minutes they wouldn't be in the way so often and they wouldn't be so annoying.

Perhaps with your neighbours ~ some tabards printed with "Neighbourhood Parking Monitor" and go along taking photos of the cars (before they return with their kids?).

I have a similar problem. I‘m on the main road leaving the town so cars (possibly having come off the A1) wend their way through the town and up a hill with nowhere much to stop, and cresting the hill they come to my entrance (and a straight bit of road) and park across it while changing drivers/getting stuf om the boot/or whatever. They don‘t stop before the drive because the kerb is too high to open the door. They don’t often stop long enough to block me me (unless delivery vehicles :() but the dog goes mad all the time they are there :(.

I see it as essential not to block a driveway. It's something I just won't do. Seems others aren't so fussy.

Actually another problem is when they park half on the kerb or maybe just block the sloping bit of the kerb down to the road as I often push someone in a wheelchair and if I can't get past or that sloping bit is blocked it sometimes means turning around and going back to find a spot at which I can get onto the road and then I have to push the chair along the road and of course the nutters in cars aren't impressed and have zero patience.

As that woman said, I should move :D

That's another thing I don't do, I don't block the pavement. People with pushchairs and wheelchairs need to get past.

Go out onto your drive and take photos and let them see you doing this. When they complain tell them that the law allows you to take photos from your own property.
When asked why, say you are logging all transgressions for reporting to their registration body, as they are encouraging learner to break the law.
Tell them you have tried to be polite about it but you get ignored.

We're here ..Sw Cornwall ..for a month.
In the circumstances, some might question why you're in Cornwall if your home is in Gloucester.

Dont bother with the petty signs. Why make a mess of your property plus I get annoyed about people that erect non-authorised notices

If your car is in the drive make a point of wanting to go out. Or if someone blocks your drive and you cant get on play bloody hell with them. Highway code only helps for the access to the road not private land.

Rule 243
DO NOT stop or park:

  • near a school entrance
  • anywhere you would prevent access for Emergency Services
  • at or near a bus or tram stop or taxi rank
  • on the approach to a level crossing/tramway crossing
  • opposite or within 10 metres (32 feet) of a junction, except in an authorised parking space
  • near the brow of a hill or hump bridge
  • opposite a traffic island or (if this would cause an obstruction) another parked vehicle
  • where you would force other traffic to enter a tram lane
  • where the kerb has been lowered to help wheelchair users and powered mobility vehicles
  • in front of an entrance to a property
  • on a bend
  • where you would obstruct cyclists’ use of cycle facilities
except when forced to do so by stationary traffic.

244
You MUST NOT park partially or wholly on the pavement in London, and should not do so elsewhere unless signs permit it. Parking on the pavement can obstruct and seriously inconvenience pedestrians, people in wheelchairs or with visual impairments and people with prams or pushchairs.
Law GL(GP)A sect 15
Does this only apply for the Damn southerners?

dcash, I do make a point of both wanting to go out and wanting to get in. Often they need to hear the horn or for me to knock on the window. I have in the past opened their door, that really shakes them :D I'm always polite and smile as I say "Excuse me, I need to get out. Can you move NOW please?" :D

It is an annoyance. But there are worse things in the world.

I wondered if someone would ask that. My response would be, why not ?

Re the surgery visit, it was a very quick test and anti-biotics ,if necessary, otherwise we'd have gone home. Things happen So, putting that aside I don't see a problem. There was no transgression of rules. As I mentioned to Cobra in another thread rules are not, as some believe, there to be broken and compliance is something I don't question. There were restrictions back in November when we were originally due to come and arranged before Covid appeared in China, so that was cancelled. The new strain came to light after we'd been here a week. We're in isolated self-catering accommodation with groceries delivered.Infact, HMG said that anyone on holiday can continue. Ou two week extention has come about because the next guests are in an area with exit restrictions and had to cancel. This is just to give you the basic picture not to justify it so I'm more than happy to respond further.

My opinion is that throughout this year there have been two quite clearly defined groups in British society: those who have thought of how their actions would affect others and those who have taken the view that "I can, so I will". We each make our choice and live with all the consequences.

Heads up guys. You are getting close
In the interest of Peace on Earth (and on Talk Photography), we have decided to close the Hot Topics section of the forum for the 12 days of Christmas.

During this time, please refrain from starting threads regarding politics, religion or any other such contentious subjects as they will be removed.

HAPPY CHRISTMAS from the owners and staff at Talk Photography

Banks and building societies.

I big shout out for the Coventry Building Society for being crap.

Trying to transfer from HSBC to Coventry is a problem as HSBC say Coventry won't accept the funds. Coventry say everything is correct and the problem is HSBC. What do HSBC say? You guessed it, the problem is Coventry.

So I ring Coventry back and wait and wait and wait and then enter my security details and I'm then told that the call centre is closed. What do you think they'll say if I ask them to consider putting this message at the beginning of the process not at the end when I've spent 15-20 minutes hanging on for... nothing.

I would say how do these incompetent twits stay in business but the answer is simple, they're all incompetent twits and there's no credible competition.

I had a similar problem with TSB
As a customer of 10 years called in branch to apply for contactless debit card
6 weeks later and 2 subsequent visits card had not arrived
Switched to Nat West and card arrived within 2 working days

Cumm off it... :naughty:

Mr C may be in for a nice pay day.

I missed it all but apparently the BBC were very naughty and not impartial at all and portrayed him as being very naughty indeed, not over that eye test debacle but another matter. The ensuing complaint was upheld but another only partially accepted as is the BBC's way but if he decides to sue he has the BBC's own verdict that it wasn't impartial on the first point of complaint to use as evidence. The presenter/journalist has a history of apparent bias and to put it kindly, inaccuracies, but I suppose they'll keep their position.

I don't know if he can sue. To bring an action for libel he must prove "actual or probable harm" under the 2013 act. I believe the courts have already clarified that calling a politician a stranger to the truth or untrustworthy, can't cause them actual harm because that's what most people think of them anyway! :naughty:

Maybe he can. He's sued journalists successfully before. So there's that. Carole Codswallop springs to mind. It just seems right to sue people who are broadcasting or otherwise publishing to millions or at least thousands and should be making an effort to be factual and impartial. If that's not asking too much of the BBC and wider journalism. I hope he does sue and I hope he's successful as the journalist in question is a serial offender as are so many in journalism.

Still, we're getting close to subjects that should be in other threads here.

Eye test???

Very witty,Simon.:)

As Marc,Cobra and sphexx have given it a like..well, as I say, it's witty, I feel I'm, undeservedly, in the spotlight again so..Marc & Mr C please allow me a gentle response.

Considering the circumstances which I set in out response to AF I really can't understand the tack he took in that last response before the intervention . We'd missed our booked November visit due to travel restrictions and were offered the December visit . A councillor down here said, on the regional news..about the 14th.(we came on the 11th) that visitors are welcome, to help support the local economy but please conform with requirements which,of course, we do. We haven't been out for meals or even breakfast or coffees at some of the lovely cafes we'd usually go to nor places we usually visit over the years but have bought from small shops in Falmouth and the owners were very pleased. We really are isolated on a clifftop and I had barely been out since March back home..just local walks. I even had a voluntary home-kit test which, unsurprisingly came back negative. I posted about it . We don't come across many people cliff-walking. We've stayed in these past couple of days as there are a lot of families out re New Year. I go onto the cliffs for sunrise photos..when it looks promising, doesn't always turn out that way..only me there. Same for sunsets. I won't be going for sunrise in the morning, though. -2C is forecast and yesterday was frosty and I found the steep road was,in places, slippery so I went onto the grassed area. Don't want a fall. :)

Far from us being a risk to people down here my concern is them. When we return we'll be going from what is now, since the latest tiering Tier 3 to 4.

Cobra called time on the exchange after AF's unwarranted response so I was unable to respond to that in terms I would like to have done..well, atall in reality, as AF challenged our integrity..in an open forum and it's that aspect that I take most umbrage to. There was nothing to be gained by not coming. My wife feels a lot better for having come away. She socialises a lot with many friends, I cope easily with the isolation . I think men do, in general.

Btw. It's not just the economy that is benefitting from our vist but local birds.I put out seed first thing and top ups throughout the day which have attracted, Great Tits, Dunock, a Wren,Chaffinches (including juveniles) at the last count 11 rooks which beak each other and the two magpies if they get close enough and two Jackdaws visit.

Marc and Mr C...When can things get back to what passes,in some exchanges, for normal ? :)

As Marc,Cobra and sphexx have given it a like..well, as I say, it's witty,
Yes it was amusing but not an excuse to continue.

I feel I'm, undeservedly, in the spotlight
I'd say not to that,
The more you respond the more you will open yourself up to criticism. you said your piece back a bit.
Please drop it (y)

The 12th day of Christmas officially ends on tues 5th of Jan.
All we, the mods, that is, have to do, is agree to open hot topics again ....

FYI virtually everyone involved in the HT section has been logging in since it was shut.
Very few have posted anywhere else, some never, It just makes me ( us) wonder what they are doing on a photography forum in the first place :(

Perhaps you should make everyone post an appropriate picture which they've taken to illustrate what they've written? For instance, if we're suggesting that we should all play nicely together, this sort of thing?

Just a suggestion, you understand... :naughty: :coat:

ER... No. Play nice makes me think of other activities. I'll go and have a nice calming cup of tea.

I'm not really annoyed, just a little depressed and disappointed.

I look after someone pretty much 24/7. Thank Gosh Mrs WW is understanding, I/we have to do this but just sometimes it's nice to get away just for an hour for a change and to recharge. It's snowing and I'd love to go for a walk with my camera just for an hour but I need someone to be here and they were due at 11:00. I can't blame them. After all it is snowing and they have to come all the way from next door. This is the norm. No phone call, no reason or excuse, just don't turn up.

Complain to their employer, they won't be to happy to hear they aren't doing the job

Loss of water pressure - it's barely crawling out of the tap :(

I don't have a water storage tank in my loft either.

Seems to be affecting a very large area of South Glasgow.

Hope it gets sorted quickly

FFS you guys, You know who you are ...
We didn't close HT for you to start here...

Yet another text telling me my mobile/internet provider couldn't collect any money for my DD payment

How do you know nothing happened? At the very least they now know your address etc is genuine & current :(.

Nor do you :)

Nor do you :)

They only know my mobile number is current and they have been blocked and reported as spam

No doubt they text many random mobile numbers in the hope of catching someone out

Never entered my email or password so they don't know what the email address is

Doubt they could get my home address from just clicking on the link either

Not sure if you know this, but the curser changes when you hover over an active link on a web page, it it
doesn't then it's just another word on a page so no point in clicking it

I hope so! Its not clear from tour original post that it was an sms to your phone number, one can get text message sent to your phone using only an email address — iMessages for example. But even if not, how do you know your phone number wasn’t in a breach and leaked alon with your email & mail addresses etc, as many are?

Just loading a page can effect actions regardless of clicking — I’m no expert but I prefer the precautionary principle here and in general. However, it’s up to you :).

I ordered a couple of bits from Amazon Sat ETA this coming Friday 8th.
Email last night ETA Tue 5th.
Why should that annoy me?
I selected a safe place as always.

I came home today 4th to find the small parcel tucked under the car behind the front wheel!
The tracking said, left in customers safe place ..
I had a look, and no, under the front wheel of a car is not on the list ...

iMessages for example.

Take it that's something to do with Apple, not phone of choice

ut even if not, how do you know your phone number wasn’t in a breach and leaked alon with your email & mail addresses etc, as many are?

I don't but as I get scam calls on my landline, which even I don't remember the number so isn't given
out to any thing on the internet I bet there's a fair chance they just type in a number and see what happens
As I only use my phone as a device to make/receive calls and send the odd text I can't say I'm that
worried if the do know it exists
