WAMT....what annoyed me today!

My guess is that such advantages just don't exist with simple tools like spanners, screwdrivers and hammers.

I think it's also that fewer people repair and maintain cars, do plumbing and electrical work, install gas pipes etc. we've become a nation who now pay a professional instead of (sometimes being allowed to) doing the job ourselves.

My wife can't login to her Gmail account, despite us knowing the passwords etc. We logged in a week ago without any problems. Doing a quick search, suggests that plenty of others are having this problem as well.

It's funny how things change. 40 years ago a cheap guitar was practically useless, and yet now a £200 instrument is probably quite gigable. But tools are soft and bendy, even sometimes when a bit more expensive. Possibly says more about what people use.
I suppose the only benefit of learning guitar in the 60s was if you could play the sort of cheesegraters we mostly had back then, then you can play anything!

I suspect the decline in tool quality is partly because everything is made down to a price, but also that people don’t bother repairing things any more. It’s often cheaper or more convenient to chuck stuff away and replace it, or it’s simply designed to be non repairable in the first place. I come from a long line of diy’ers/ bodgers/ make do and menders. I’ve always tried to encourage my children to do the same but have never succeeded.

That was my point really, few either know or care to fix things themselves.

Pleased with our boy though. Picked up stuff by watching and trying, he's re-shelled a car, able to work as a bike mechanic without formal training including wheel building.

Skills become obsolete over time.

There's a long list of trades and skills no longer used, here on wikipedia...

That's quite a list. I can't believe there aren't any coffee sniffers any more :ROFLMAO: Mind you, I didn't click through. Perhaps they are not what I would expect.

And no Useful Man anymore??? That made me chuckle - good job title. I'm sure you need to click through for that one.

Well yesterday, brought home my new turntable for the HiFi, coupled it all up and , the dreaded power on hum audible when not playing, damn.

The King's Speech!

NOT the tradition itself but it being on so many channels at the same time. BBC1, BBC2, ITV1, ITV3, Sky Mix and gods know how many others.

We watched "Some Mothers do ave em" then the Kings speech afterwards both recorded but it was not on every channel. To be fair, I had doubts that Charles could really take on this job but have to admit that he has done it well.

and lead story on BBC news yesterday was the King’s speech was not from a royal palace but from a chapel. History making

I've just about given up watching the traditional terrestrial channels and in fact I can't remember the last time I watched them but it was probably for a football match. At the right time I happened to be in the car with the radio on and Classic had him on so I half heard him.

Good luck to those who avidly watch and listen and I can understand why but unfortunately for a number of reasons I'm firmly in the "Not my King" corner and just about everything he says and does pushes me further into it and something he said today did push me.

Sorry if that offends royalists, it's just my own view and I respect the views of others.

I agree. You just can't get away from it. I waited until 15 minutes past three and turned the radio on to listen to LBC which almost always has interesting subjects for the phone-ins and I was just in time to hear the host say.."We're going to talk about the king's speech" I turned it off.

I noticed that, too. I just can't be doing with any of them tbh.

His speech today, was top of the bulletins, too even though Kyiv had been targeted with 79 missiles and drones. 60 missiles and 54 drones were shot down according to Ukrainian sources.

I do like Christmas cake and Christmas pudding . I bought two oblong Christmas cakes and a pudding from M&S. They were so disappointing that the pudding is in the food bin and we'll give the unwrapped second cake to next door. Can't really give them 3/4 of the unwrapped one. My wife agrees with me,too. The pudding was six months maturing, too. I'll nip over to Lidl in the morning and see if they have any stollen left..pieces in a pack or a full cake . I haven't seen it on sale any other time of the year and it's a real favourite of mine.

It was easy enough to miss the speech - I just happened to be doing something else.

A problem with pre-made food in recent times is that, under pressure from government and health care professionals, sugar and salt are being left out. It's negatively impacting flavour and enjoyment, and in some cases I simply add them back to taste. We had a tesco christmas pud this evening, and I drizzled sloe gin over it before serving, and that perked it up quite a bit.

I thought I wouldn't bother making a Christmas cake just for me and the occasional guest so I bought one from ASDA and it's a disappointment. I wish I'd made my own now.

If there's one outstanding issue I don't like about Christmas week is the way the TV scheduling goes out of the window. I like The Chase at 5.00pm..switching to the Antiques Road Show during the breaks followed by the BBC News at 6.00pm. ( I can,at least, go to News24)... followed by Chn4 News at 7.00pm . What is shown is of poor quality and/or the usual Christmas shows. Morecombe & Wise, The Two Ronnies, Where Eagles Dare(1968) Some Like it Hot (BBC2..1959) High Society (1956) Home Alone ((1992) Raiders of the Lost Ark( 1981) Britains Favourite Comedy Moments. Tomorrow BBC2 will show the 2000 film, Gladiators. ITV will show "Grease'..that's 1978.

The digital video recorder is one of the great inventions of the twentieth century.

We have a couple of units and simply choose the programmes that interest us, by checking the Freeview listing screens. We watch what we want, when we want and only see live broadcasts by accident... :naughty:

We felt it was the generation game repeat from 1992 that really defined the quality of this year's TV offerings...

Kings? Queens? I'm trying to remember which was the last of the royals to die, sword in hand, fighting for our (?) country! Tourists seem to like them.

Richard III (of England) or James IV (of Scotland).

My son bought me a lightweight drone for my Birthday yesterday. It took me 20 minutes to get it out of the Apple tree this morning.........

The auto trim doesn't seem to function, and it drifted into the tree before I could do anything about it....... :headbang::oops: :$:police:

Is it Russian or Chinese?

Went out in car today and returned 20 minutes later to find this bumper (?) on the grass verge by our drive. It could have been cut into a few pieces and put in the wheelie bin, which is what I did with it, rather than leave it at the roadside. The driver must surely, have been aware .It's old.

Looks like a wheel arch liner..
I have no idea,Gav. The reason I mentioned a bumper was the shape at the end. Just like a bumper. Having said that,it was very malleable...rubbery with a fabric lining, not the hard plastic you'd get with a bumper Still, it would have made a clatter as it fell off the vehicle. We'll go with a wheel arch, then :)

Looks to me like a wheel arch inner lining, not sure what model of car though.

Wheel arch liners. The tuppence ha'penny parts that could have saved the UK cars of the sixties/seventies before the bean counters killed the industry and sold it off to India and the Far East. I would have loved some of these on my (not so old) Vauxhall Victor before the wings rusted through and fell off!

Rust can be photogenic, providing it's on someone else's property... :naughty:

WAMT! I crashed my drone! I somehow flew it into my bicycle, the sensors didn't pick it up and avoid it, so it hit the saddle and crashed.

Camera and gimble dislodged. Already on it's way to DJI for repair :(
