Yes
Does anyone here have experience or tips about building a false wall on which to mount an LCD.

Its on a chimney breast in the centre of a wall with shelving units in the recesses on either side. The sky box, dvd/hd recorder and associated gubbins will sit on one of the shelves to the side. Hiding cables by blasting away the chimney breast is not an option.

I previously mounted direct onto the brickwork. But that 37" has been replaced by a soon to arrive 42" and I ought to do the job properly. :suspect:

I have done this, if you could post a piccy to see what you have got to play with. I will try and help.

Are you looking to do something like this.

Yes - remarkably similar. Only with newly plastered and painted walls. And plenty of the paint is left over.

Imagine, to the right of the fireplace and in a deeper alcove, some shelves one of which is (or will be) level with the top of the fireplace.

If you make the false wall on the chimneybreast removable it makes life a lot easier when you want to change cables / upgrade.

If you have a large rectangular gap in the false wall (it'll be hidden by the TV) then you can mount the TV straight to the brick and have room for any spare cable length.

if thats your setup , do you get any neck strain looking up at the TV. I've always wanted to put one above our fireplace but was warned that it's not comfortable to look at ???

That's the sort of height I was planning. The same as our old one. I've never encountered a problem with it being at that height.

I have a 42" plasma fitted in the same manner, neck strain isn't a problem as the screen is so big. Mine's also tilted down about 10 degrees to help matters and reduce reflections.

All my cables are in the wall, with just an inch of cable to the center speaker visible.

No you don't get neck ache the television is mounted on a bracket that is adjustable. Mine is set at 10 degrees. it's designed to go to 15 degrees off vertical.
First of all I would not attach it to a false wall. Much safer to bolt the bracket to the brickwork.
The way I did it was to take off a piece of skirting board that was about 4" long on the
chimney breast, then chased out some brickwork behind it. Then I drilled a hole at the edge of the mitre, of the other piece of skirting, making sure that the hole overlapped the mitre so that the cables slip into the hole. Now this is where mine could differ from yours,
The fireplace is hollow inside So the cables run up the back. then I chased up to the bracket. just wide and deep enough to bury the four cables. This is where I was lucky. As you can see the wall is papered, so to cover up was easy.
But if I was going to put it on a wall with no fire place or paper. I would find the easiest route and chase it out. I appreciate that you have just decorated but to fill a chase and sand it smooth is a whole lot less trouble than building a false wall.
IMO Leaving a large hole in a false wall could foul the bracket, Because you never know when you need to take it down. I hope this gives you a little help.

Thanks for that. I looked at the option of chasing out the brickwork when the builder was on site and before the plastering. Most of the material used in the area of concern is what I would call breeze block but I'm told it's a toughened type of block for use in chimney breasts and the like. It's like granite and is not for chasing out.

John,

I've yet to find a solid wall in the house, my TV is above the fire as that pic,
It's a thermalite block wall with dot and dab plasterboard over it.

The fixings were resin bonded into the blocks.

The plasma screens seem to be much heavier than the LCD screens, mine is almost 80Kg iirc.

80kg!!! begorrah!

I thought mine was bad at 30kg.

80Kg?!?!!? You sure? :eek::eek::eek:

I'll find the book for it, I'm pretty sure it was around 76Kgs when on it's bracket. It was a 2 man job to get the thing on the wall and hold it in place while the bolts were tightened.

I cheated with my install, I got a great company into do it

Top quality work

Quick edit for additional info

It's actually only 35kg for bare TV, I'd looked at the wrong weight, that was including the table/stand thing :bonk:

On the wall it's probably close to 40kgs, which is still alot for a block you can crack with your fist

Im too scared to mount my TV on the wall i want it on. It was crumbling when i was drilling it :p Will probably get a pro in when i can afford it.

My lcd weighs about 13kg (32") and the bracket is about 25kg

i have done exactly the same with my TV, i channelled all the cables i need - or will ever need into the wall from behind the telly to down at the floor. As gor the breeze block, it's nothing a angle grinder won't sort ;)
