Vital information. Everyone should watch this video

I've had a mobile phone much longer than I can remember.

I've not heard of 112 until now, great info.

Thanks for the link, I have emailed it to a few mates already.

Great info. Thanks for sharing.

WTF is in his head that it blocks the phone signal and he has to turn around?!?

Good info though.

thats great, il have to register my phone

I heard of this a long time ago, it works just the same as 999 but it can be dialled almost anywhere in the EU. All GSM mobiles can dial it and it's a designated emergency number by all networks. Great info from the OP, I just thought everyone knew about it but it seems not. It should be advertised more IMO.

Providing you have signal :)

I remember this vid its quite old now. Another one to perhaps ponder over is a recent one by Andy Armstrong, if your on his Facebook profile check the video 'you are not Jerry or Jasmine'

Isn't that the point of 112 though? I thought if you didn't have signal on your own network it would use any network. This obviously is assuming you aren't miles from anywhere.

I had heard of this, but not in such detail.
Very useful post Simon.

It is and the text option is also available.

I did not know that. Ashamed now. I am having my children watch it as we'll. good post thanks.

Apparently only about 13% of the UK are aware.

It is definitely something that needs to be promoted more. The number itself is on a lot of signs now on walking/climbing routes etc as well as waterways and harbours etc, but not necessarily the importance of it or it's particularities.

A lot of the outward bounds, mountaineering, hillwalking training people have been promoting it for years.

Good video, thanks for posting. I have been aware of 112 for some time as I visit Europe a lot but there was more detail in the video.
One other point that I have seen mentioned is that as your phone will connect to any network the base station may be in another area, so you need to tell the operator where you are before they connect you to the police etc. Otherwise they may connect you to the wrong force which can cause delays.

I have now registered my Mobile Phone but have spotted a problem - I also have another mobile with a Belgian Number - and it's not possible to register that one - I've tried. I have discovered at times that my Belgian phone gets a better signal than my UK VIrgin one :(

im saying if there is zero signal (i.e. dead spot) at all it wont work. basically there are several hoaxes online about 112 using a satellite backup when there is no signal which are incorrect.

Great advice. I'm a bit shocked that this isn't common knowledge though. I've never heard of it and its important advice I think.

Also not sure if this is 100% true or not..but got the information from a safety convention at work.

If you dial 999 its just go through to the operators...however if you use 112...it gives the operator your rough location using the gsm signal. Great for on motorways, or when your stuck somewhere where your not exactly sure where.

Is what he says about calling 112 instead of 999 really valid, I can't find anything from a good source out there to support it and most semi reliable sources seem to indicate that 112 or 999 makes no difference what so ever......

Not trying to muddy the waters but would like to see some official support for the idea that ringing 112 makes any difference at all.

I'm not aware that it makes any difference in the UK, but the point is that 112 works throughout Europe.
999 doesn't work in most other countries.

Just set it up on my phones Thanks; I was aware of it, but originally thought it was intended primarily for disabled users. I guess they have realised the benefits of wider publicity.

Just for clarification, dialling 112 in the UK is exactly the same as dialling 999; ie both will jump networks for mobiles and both can be gps tracked (ish). The only difference is that 112 is a pan European number, whereas 999 isn't. :)

Must admit, I thought most people knew about this too. The 112 number also works in a number of countries outside the EU, although the only ones I've personally validated are South Africa and Zimbabwe.

Of course, calling for assistance in SA is one thing, and actually getting any sort of response is another!

They probably don't want people to over use it like 999 is nowadays. Isn't there a new number for non-emergency emergencies lol? something like 111?
