Vital information. Everyone should watch this video

The difference between 112 nd 999 is in how the call is routed.

I knew about 112 and its ability to ensure connection (a 112 call takes priority over existing calls if the network is full, 999 queues up with any other standard call - so it can be a "network busy" result. You will never get that with 112). I didn't know about the text message system - despite doing several coaching courses, leadership courses and emergency responder courses.

I thought most people would find it useful - lets face it, if only ONE person found it useful, it didn't cost much to do!

So...... where has the OP gone?

I mentioned this whilst on a St Johns First Aid course and they told me it is not true.

He'll be fishing probably - haven't seen him in the office this week so I reckon he's out on jobs :)

Calling 999 ignores global action messages and allows the use of reserved channels in the same way 112 does.

Which bit do they claim isn't true?

As far as I know 112 = 999 in the UK, both bypass modern phone security and take priority over none emergency calls in the UK.
Text messages often, but not always, get through when the signal is too poor for voice.
It is possible to register for text 112 calls as I've done it.
and finally 112 is Europe wide and many other countries besides, though sometimes depending on where you are it will automatically take you direct to the police rather than a call handling service.

What isn't true? I watched it despite being old news, and didnt hear an untrue word. Blimey I'm surprised that people don't know this, typical uk doing their own thing. This is such common knowledge across Europe. I remember big campaigns in holland when it was introduced gosh decades ago. I actually didn't know :) about 999 until I saw those stupid programmes on the tv.

I heard of this a long time ago, it works just the same as 999 but it can be dialled almost anywhere in the EU. All GSM mobiles can dial it and it's a designated emergency number by all networks. Great info from the OP, I just thought everyone knew about it but it seems not. It should be advertised more IMO.

Yes it's not new, we heard about this several years ago, but it's handy information if you haven't heard of it

Also not sure if this is 100% true or not..but got the information from a safety convention at work.

If you dial 999 its just go through to the operators...however if you use 112...it gives the operator your rough location using the gsm signal. Great for on motorways, or when your stuck somewhere where your not exactly sure where.

The Q & A page http://www.emergencysms.org.uk/questions_and_answers.php

states that " Location information is passed to the emergency services, but texting the address or a nearby landmark will help them to find you."

It also states "Q. Do I have to be deaf to register?

A. No, the service is for people who cannot make voice calls because they have a hearing loss or a speech impairment."

I assume from that if you are in a position to make a 999 voice call you should use that service.

Not at all. you can use 112 for decades now...As the chap in the video says, if you have bad signal, and a voice call on 112 on any of the other operator networks also doesn't work. Chances are an SMS message will still go through. You use it for that, any other occasion you are much better off speaking to an operator if you can...
