Vista is in general release in a few hours.

So, who is going to upgrade?

same here, i like XP, its been very stable for me, and my system specs will need to be looked at if i want to upgrade...may as well wait a few months and let the big bugs get ironed out!

I'll wait till the first service pack is out to fix all the problems with it :)

I do fancy it but I'm still mindful of the nightmare I had upgrading to XP. I'm tempted to jump straight in though. I mean it's only a computer, what could possibly go wrong

I've been running the beta at work for months now and it's great, not perfect though. I work for an IT company so we get lots of things before they go on general release. We have been selling Vista for a while now and it's selling very well.

I'm sticking with XP at home, it's never let me down.

I'm only just starting to think about upgrading to XP :embarrassed:

I can't see what Vista will do for me , as I always build my own PC's I'll be sticking with XP until I can't get driver support for it .

i have been running Vista in various guises for months too, the latest pre release candidate was really nice but a bit limited with game support, the release version we have for work is not bad at all !

Think ill wait for SP1 though lol

I'm staying with XP

Until 2 or more of the following happen:
A) My machine dies
B) All games that I play require vista
C) At least 1 service pack has been released

ie not for quite some time

Got a free upgrade coming through the post for both mine and sue's laptop, will be installing them as soon as i get it and keeping media centre on the pc upstairs to link through to the 360 for now.

I like living on the edge and after trying the alpha, beta and RC releases I'm ready to unleash it onto this sytem ;)

Well i'm sticking to my Ubuntu. M$ can kiss my a$$ if they want friggin £279 for yet another OS thats got more bugs and virus than anything else on the planet.

So we'll not be hearing much from you & Sue for the next few weeks ;)

less than £130 for Ultimate, I really can't stand this anti-microsoft attitude that some people seem to have for no real apparent reason.

What bugs does the final release of Vista have that you're aware of? What viruses have been written specifically for vista?

Microsoft have produced some of the best software on the planet and the continued development and innovation continues to impress.

There are always going to be bugs and vulnerabilities but these are quickly fixed and sorted and anyone with a legal copy of windows has access to the updates and anti spyware for free.

I've not had a virus infection on my own computer since I used windows 98 - half of the issue nowadays is user stupidy - clicking on attachments in emails that are viriii, not having anti virus and spyware applications installed - clicking on pop ups and visiting unsavory sites.

P2P file sharing has also caused a large influx of virus infections.

Please don't criticise an operating system that you've obviously not tried let alone extensively tested.

Stak are selling Vista home basic for £55 going up to £117 for the Ultimate version. It's good to see M$ have got their act together re prices for this product, I reckon there'll be a lot less field eval copies about.

Personally i find it odd that there are so many different versions of a desktop operating system. Why is there not just one?

[edit] 6 versions?!?!

i'll be sticking with XP...........bill G and his mates can go whistle dixie through their butt holes.

my main rig is too old to bother with an upgrade and i'm quite happy with the lappy as it is......hell......I might even change the desktop image on it soon away from the original dell one

Are you sure Ultimate is gonna be that sort of price? Not doubting you but Amazon are showing it at £249 for upgrade and £369 new install  I thought the price of Windows was one of those price fixed things

Because not everyone needs the ability to use media centre, not everyone needs the ability to join a domain.

Pricing structure allows people to get what they need out of the operating system at a price thats good for them.

I haven't forgotten your sky box btw, should get around to posting it this coming weekend if I remember to take it with me this time :p

People have already got it in their hands.

The prices amazon are quoting are for retail copies, in a retail box from a shelf. You can pick up the CD with a COA (Certificate of Authenticity) for £130 from overclockers amongst other places.

Thanks Matt, that makes sense

I was quoting from an email I got from Stak today so I reckon that's about the price it will settle at.

Thanks :) We seem to miss each other on MSN, or you're ignoring me

There's one version of OS X, so why 6 of Vista? Personally i don't really see the reasoning at all. I'm not anti-MS either as my day job is a .NET developer :) To me it just seems like a way of conning people out of more money, though i could of course be wrong!

What he said.

Its also noteworthy that the Vista Home Premium package (OEM version) can be had for under £70. However, if you want to pay an extra £200 for a box, knock yourself out.

Places such as Amazon only supply boxed retail versions. Go somewhere like CCL for an OEM version.

trust me matt., its for the best... :p

Yey Vista :D Service Pack 1 is already scheduled for later this year.

According to Webroot research, Windows Defender – a free anti-spyware program – failed to block 84 percent of 15 of the most common spyware and malware variants.

Nicely done.

"They're really grasping at straws for reasons to upgrade the operating system. I suspect I could run XP for a great many more years without having a problem with it." - By John Carmack, coding legend of Doom / Quake fame

Nearly all of the major, visible new features in Vista are already available in Apple's operating system, called Mac OS X, which came out in 2001 and received its last major upgrade in 2005. And Apple is about to leap ahead again with a new version of OS X, called Leopard, due this spring. - Wall Street Journal

Amid the hype surrounding the release of Windows Vista, Mac users are taking solace from the fact that OS X is still a champ on many fronts. Here are some reasons our reviewer John C. Welch opts for Apple. Information Week

Ill stick with the best Apple Mac G4 1.42 Duel processor & G5 2.7 Duel processor OSX 10.4.8 on both:thumbs:

Just ordered this as a free upgrade to Media Centre from a new PC I bought at the weekend  reading all this I don't think I'll put it on now :help:

Not anti M$ , some of their software is very good (if a tad expensive ;))

Not tried / seen it yet but from what I've seen in the reviews it uses more memory/cpu/hd but doesn't give me anything that my bought copy of XP & my bought copies of other software doesn't already give me.

I might consider vista when I am in a position where XP does not do what I need any more.
Currently XP works. properly. I've not had a virus that wasn't my fault for 6 years and I've not had to re-install windows for any reason other than a hardware faliure.
Compared to 95, 98, and ME that is impressive. Only other OS so reliable was 2K

I think that's the real problem with Vista, XP. XP added real game support to the excellent Win2K and unified their OSs into one main system. So for years we've all been used to a solid OS that does everything we need. However for the majority of users the OS has become a real target for viruses, trojans and spyware. So one would think that adding better security to Vista would be a great selling point for the OS to novice users. From trying it I think its a bit silly. "Are you sure you want to turn this off? ... Yes ... *ALERT* THIS has been turned off, turn it back on!" Their idea of better security is to alert the user to every minor change. Basically they added paranoia to the OS. So its not exactly a great reason to upgrade from XP. Yes you can turn it off, but then that makes the feature even more pointless.
