Vista

Games are the only reason I'll be upgrading to Vista.
And I'll hang fire on that as long as possible.

And then moan about my old games not working anymore.

Still, I do like the look of DX10.

I'll keep running it on my test machine until I can be bothered to upgrade my main one, I like it but not in any rush for the hassle of rebuilding my main PC at the moment;)

Ill be sticking with XP pro until the apps i use become vista only as it will require some new hardware for my system.

Theres not a single game you can't get working with the help of compatibility mode, ScummVM or dosbox Hoodi ;)

Not anti M$ , some of their software is very good (if a tad expensive ;))

Not tried / seen it yet but from what I've seen in the reviews it uses more memory/cpu/hd but doesn't give me anything that my bought copy of XP & my bought copies of other software doesn't already give me.

That reply was aimed at Brummie mate, nobody else :)

if i buy a mac, will i be able to use cs2 and all the other software ive *bought on it? I would like to get a mac, suit my wifes style choices nicely and ive always had a secret hankering, but i want my software to work!

You'd be able to run CS2, but having a mac doesn't grant you sudden magical powers of image manipulation :p

/me runs

The main difference in terms of software availability for the Mac is probably in the games area. There are lots of games for it, but not nearly as many as there are for PC. I don't care about games, so I'm quite happy with my Mac.

Most of the mainstream image manipulation stuff is available apart from a few oddball things like Raw Magick (I think) It's worth checking though that you don't need to buy them again, or have to do an 'upgrade' to get Mac media even if they run on both.

less than £130 for Ultimate, I really can't stand this anti-microsoft attitude that some people seem to have for no real apparent reason.

The difference being the EULA. And for your information i'm not anti M$. What i hate is people who have a one sided view on things. It's called ignorance.

What bugs does the final release of Vista have that you're aware of? What viruses have been written specifically for vista?

There are plenty. I have mail from several security companies, including M$.

Microsoft have produced some of the best software on the planet and the continued development and innovation continues to impress.

They do develop some great software but they never seem to get it right for some reason.

There are always going to be bugs and vulnerabilities but these are quickly fixed and sorted and anyone with a legal copy of windows has access to the updates and anti spyware for free.

All OS and other software have bugs and security issues.
Most companies fix these and issue a patch. Ubuntu issue theirs daily.
M$ do theirs monthly so it may be up to 60 days before you get a patch

I've not had a virus infection on my own computer since I used windows 98 - half of the issue nowadays is user stupidy - clicking on attachments in emails that are viriii, not having anti virus and spyware applications installed - clicking on pop ups and visiting unsavory sites.

None that you know of anyway. If you used linux you wouldnt even have to worry about it.

P2P file sharing has also caused a large influx of virus infections.

Doesnt matter where the things come from. They are there. lit

Please don't criticise an operating system that you've obviously not tried let alone extensively tested.

you know for certain?? obviously not.

I'm hardly ignorant. Your first post showed ignorance by the flippance of telling MS to kiss your a***, generalising about the bugs and viruses the operating system would invariably suffer from.

The differences in the EULA are negligable and for your average user they won't matter one bit. The part that was up in the air for a while was about the OEM versions being tied to one machine, MS relaxed this and said as long as it was only installed on one machine at any one time there was no issue.

This discussion has already gotten heated enough, lets let it cool down a bit shall we? I apologise for what I said but your original post could have been taken as an expert opinion and caused lots of people to panic if they were thinking of buying a new PC/had ordered Vista.

I've used Linux in its many flavours, I even tried to use Wine to get the games I wanted to run running but I always drift back to Windows. Linux has its place - in the home on the desktop is unfortunately not it (at the moment).

woo hoo M$ 5uX0r!

just went to look at the vista site, broke..oh the irony

Working fine here, you sure you spelt it right? We know what you're like for typo's

There's also not a single game that takes advantage of DX10 yet, and Carmack doesn't even see the need for it. They could have released DX10 for XP I'm sure, but they chose to tie it into Vista making it a marketable feature :(

DX10 graphics cards havent even hit yet properly, I won't be upgrading to one any time soon anyway - most of my gaming is shifting across to the Xbox 360.

A lot of the new features in vista excite me - its going to be more intergrated with my Xbox and will allow me to play against people who are playing the same game on a PC. It should also improve the media centre bits and pieces.

Sure they could have released DX10 for XP but its been out a while now, things are moving on.

Did you see the thing at CES where they had the Microsoft kitchen? Put a food processor on the kitchen top and it read the RFID chip in it, placed a bag of flour down and it read that and told you what you could use them both to make.

Personally I'm really looking forward to the better Xbox integration, expecially the Media Centre elements as I stream all my music across my home network using the xbox nowadays. So much better than having a wall full of unsightly CD's in the lounge IMO

Dont take this as being petty but other than those of us who work in IT and/or teach people how to use this stuff your best bet is to hold back for about 6 months, after the dust has settled, bugs have been discovered and patches start rolling then upgrade - but never rush into to these, theres honestly no point other than if you buy a new PC and its preinstalled. Theres not going to be any widely used software that will require Vista for for atleast a few months.

Just my opinion on this

Nothing petty about that at all :)

Its very good advice.

A lot of the bugs have already been ironed out though with the many releases that have been tested to death over the last few months. Businesses have been able to use Vista since November (I think) so there might well be many bugs that were fixed again prior to release.

Its had a lot more testing than XP had with its release.

As long as your PC has a vista capable sticker on it Vista should install without a problem.

still broke, followed the link from microsofts own site, even i cant spell that wrong

Link is working fine here - your computers not broken is it Matty, your not using a Mac are you :p ;)

internut exploder i expect...

Darksaber, just out of interest, have you had much experience with other operating systems other than Windows? By that i mean proper experience, and not a few days here and there :)

got to make sure it works.

I've been using Novell Netware since 1992 - a Network operating system granted but its based on Unix/now moving to a Linux build.

I ran linux on my laptop for two weeks, had my own linux server set up at home that hosted my mail and my website (which was great fun to set up from the command line - no seriously - I love the command line :D ).

I've tried red hat, unbuntu, SuSe. By tried I mean carried out feasibility studies for replacing the Windows desktops here at work.

I have plenty of Experience :)

irony of ironies, works fine in Firefox...

lmfao

BS I'm afraid - while these apps can help tremendously (along with the likes of VMsound) it's a nightmare to get a lot of old games running even vaguely playably, nevermind as well as they would have done in days gone by // with full sound etc.

If you want to test that, we'll start with something relatively easy. Try System Shock.

That's all on XP, Vista will undoubtedly be a zillion times worse.

I like then sound of DX10. Not for shininess or speed, but for the very fact that they've just ignored anything lower than Vista - the whole API sounds better built for the purpose. Par examplé - if an atrociously coded game should crash out in a spectacular fashion you should just drop back to the OS, as the two are totally seperate from one another.
