I seen a few comments about video DSLR's not being allowed at Sports events. Which would seem to make putting video on pro DSLR's a silly idea.

Just wondered if this was fact or fiction?

I think he was coming from a 'pro' tog point of view, and yes, if the rumour mill is true then video will cause big problems for the pro togs. I'm sure I read somewhere that FIFA had already put plans in place to ban video capable cameras.

A sports tog will better answer this, but I believe you are not meant to have video capability if you are covering a sporting event as an official tog. I think there was therefore some worry when the 1dMIV came out as it has video, what will happen in practise I'm not sure.

I ahve seen videos made with a mark3 :)

err, indeed, but I did say it was just rumour ...

think one was posted on here not long ago, was a music video of some sort...interesting

thats the one I was thinking of :)

Lots of things are capable of doing lots of other things. Video is covered in the curerent licence agreement so i cant see it being a problem

As a prospective buyer of the mk4 I have just fired an email off to the CPS (Canon pro Service) as I am a member.. see what they have to say.. see if we can put the rumours to bed :)

yep, I'd be amazed if a 1dMKIV was not allowed in for those reasons, you'd have thought this would all have been checked by Canon before hand, and if not it would be the mother of all !"£$$$ups! Then again you know what they say about assumptions....

I posed this question on the A.P. site last week....It didn't receive any concluding answers there either!

Could be an urban myth.

Hmm interesting answers, I believe the myth idea to be quite plausible as I've only heard it mentioned when I've been looking at buying a D3 and the sellers always saying that the high price they want for it, is due to the fact that pro sports togs will not be able to use the new D3s, and therefore the value of the S/H D3 remains high.

Very cunning :naughty:

two days later and a reply from frankie jim at canon UK

Hi Mr.Greenwood,

What exists and has been running for some time is:

The F.A,(Football Association), The FIA (Federation Internationale de
I’Automobile), FIFA, the IOC (International Olympic Committee) and the
AELTC (All England Lawn Tennis Club) are asking ALL accredited
photographers to sign an pre-agreement stating they will not publish any
video content (regardless of whether they are shooting video or not.)

Violation of this will result in them or their agency losing their
accreditation

Obviously, t's & c's are subject to change so its always best to ask for
the latest information but in short, using DSLR's with video capability is
not an issue so long as you don't shoot video content on it.
I hope this answers your query.

Regards,

Frankie

So thats straight from the horses mouth so to speak... ya cant beat asking :)

IMPORTANT UPDATE

Furthur to my response from canon uk regarding video capabilities on the mkIV who say no problem

Today I spoke (by telephone) to Derek Johnston at DataCo (Responsible for actual licences) and being careful not to missquote the best I can put on here for sure is they are "looking into it" and cant give a definite answer as to what the decision would be on allowing a mkIV with video capabilities into sports grounds covered by dataco..

A lot more was said but thats all I would quote and I did ask him if I could repeat that.

This has abviously put me right off buying one until there is an announcement :( if bought and a decision against the camera was made.. the resale value would plummit and I would lose out :(

Are you talking from a pro's point of view?

i.e - If I turned up at a football ground in the crowd, I couldn't video the game a tall?

Yes this is with reference to pro shooters but even more so if your in the crowd! :rules:

your not actually allowed to photograph OR video from the crowd.. yes i know poeple do but you can be thrown out.. moreso with a camera like that ..

So realistically if you have a p&s you would be ok. If you have a D90/other video camera and/or big lens they may chuck you out.

I'm not into football, but what is it to go and see Man united? £50? and you can't even take a photo to show you were there!

Seems crazy to me. Although I went to a music festival a year or so ago, they are now banning all SLR's because they think people might be making money out of it.

That was one of the main reasons I went, to take photo's, for my own pleasure and enjoyment. It is soon going to be impossible to own and use and SLR anywhere.

:bang:

realistically yes.. but its the same for most events and the same for most of life as a photogrpaher.. having a big camera and big lenses has its ups and downs.. so long as you come to terms with those and understand thats the way of the world....then life is good :)

the above is meant as a generalisation.. not at you or anyone in particualr :)

Yep the problem comes from the inconsitency of Stewarding. At the world 20:20 earlier this year, people with DSLRS were regularly told to put cameras away whilst those with P&S were ignored.

Most stewards seem to associate "big cameras" with good pictures.

Yet during the Ashes i saw people in the crowd with tripod, MKIII and Sigma 50-500 with a steward close by ignoring him completely :bang:

I can understand why its frustrating for fans, but sport is about £&$ now and its hard enough for the people that should be there with cameras to get in:bonk:

I was chatting to a freelance car tog and he used a 5Dmk2 because of the Video on DSLR option. He could shoot additional footage for the websites thus maximise his income stream from a single shoot.

Was talking to my Mom about this, along with the other threads relating to getting stopped for taking photos.

When I look back to when I was really into film photography, 91-96 ish. I probably couldn't do most of that any more :

Slr @

Wimbledon
Blackburn rovers football games
School football game
Swimming competition

Rovers_Andy - You say that people associate slr's with good pictures, this is true. But it's the reason we buy them!

personally i ahve always thought video on a camera was a novelty... but then i thought the same about camera on a phone and look how thats took off :)

it will ahve its uses no doubt... but the poeple who own rights to sporting events dont want pro videos being taken by anyone other than those paying for the ability..

KIPAX : Just noticed you're in Accrington, I used to live there!

Yes i know but the point i was making is that the Stewards are allowing P&S's in on the misconception that "oh its only a small camera, it can't be any good" but with the current lineup of P&S's you can get some good results

See you're point. Especially as p&s are improving greatly each time a new one comes out.

Kipax : Used to support Rovers, but gone off football in the last ten years or so. Find it boring to watch, not just Rovers!!

Have to admit i havent been to Rovers this season, mainly due to covering PNE when Blackburn have been playing. Not a fan of Alladyce either. Hoping to cover the carling cup semi though :D
