Yes
I have unplugged my camera from my PC without safely removing the device.
I've done this before by mistake and thisng have been ok.
Last night, when i plugged my camera in via the USB port i get a message to the effect of USB device not recognised.
I reinstalled the software and as It was uninstalling it came accross a locked .exe file. The name of this file is something like ***DCF.exe and I think this is something to do with data transfer.
I tried the camera again after the install and it was still not recognised.
Popped the install disc in again, this time It did not come accross any locked files.
Tried the camrea again, still not recognised.
When i look at the device manager it says that i may not have drivers loaded. I do have the drivers loaded as I've reinstalled the software, at least I'm assuming I do as I had no errors during install.

Its a Fuji Finepix s7000 digital prosumer camera.

What have I done? What can I do to fix it?
Any Ideas?

I do not see anywhere you switching off your PC/Laptop and switching it on. Generally that way it clears any buffers etc. Try that if you haven't already.

Andy - just get a card reader - far quicker and less hassle. :)

I've got a card reader. I was so flustered last night trying to get the PC to recognise the camera that It did not occurr to me to use it untill I was on my way to work this morning.
It would be nice to sort my problem out though as I sometimes use my camera as a webcam

The only thing I can suggest is to completely uninstall any software to do with your camera, and do a complete fresh install. Computers can be such fun can't they? :D

Also, assuming you already have the pics off the card, format it before plugging into pc again. Had the same problem with a pendrive, forgot to turn it off before unplugging - totally effed the thing, but once formatted it was fine, the pc recognized it again.

Morning again :D
I always use a card reader myself. I suppose there's also the possibility of damage to the usb lead/usb plug on the camera.

But it's more than likely software based, something else you installed recently has upset some of the files required.
If your running Windows XP you could always try System restore back to when you know it last worked.

Cheers guys.
I'm gonna dig out my card reader. I assume it can read my compact flash card. At least I will then have the photographs off of the card. They are the childrens first day at school :(
I will give all of your suggestions a try tonight and keep you all posted.
I just hope I have not damaged the camera but it seems to operate properly.

As said above - uninstall software. Reboot. Install software. USB just does that kind of nonsense sometimes. You might even find it will work now if you plug into a different socket or use a hub.

Definitely sounds like a driver problem to me. It is very unlikely that any damage has been caused to the camera.

As has already been said. Completely uninstall the software before reinstalling. The locked file that you spoke about is more than likely the one that sits in the System Tray for photo transfer. Plug the camera into the furthest away USB port from the one it is in at the moment. Usually USB ports are in banks of two and plugging it into a seperate one will cause windows to reinstall the drivers anyway.

If that doesn't work, boot up in Safe Mode and open Device Manager (Windows key + Pause/Break), you should see your camera listed (possibly more than once). Right-click on it and uninstall. Boot back into normal Windows and try reinstalling again.

Open the Device Mangler. (Press the Windows+Break keys, select Hardware then Device Manager)
Highlight any devices with an exclamation mark and hit the delete key.
Open the USB controller tree and highlight each controller listed in turn and hit delete until the the tree disappears.
Reboot.
By the magic of plug and pray order will be returned. But it might be prudent to dance around the PC with a sacrificial chicken.

I've had a couple of S7000s & IIRC, didn't need any drivers under XP SP2.

Have you accidentally changed the USB mode from mass storage (DSC) to webcam (PC) mode in the camera's setup menu? P99 of the manual.

:woot:
Hooray, problem solved with all of your help.
Big thanks to everyone.

First off, my card reader does not do compact flash so there is something new on my shopping list now.

I took all of your advice.
Step 1: - Uninstall all of the software associated with the camera. Last night all I did was re-install it over the top.
Step 2: - Spannerdude told me to delete any devices with exclamation marks (there were none) and then to delete all the USB controllers and re boot.
Step 3: - Install software
Step 4: - Dance naked around the PC with a sacrificial chicken and chant
Step 5: - Plug in camera

And it all works. I think the dancing naked step helped the most :D:D

So thanks to you all. And I hope this thread is useful to others.

I can now go to New York this weekend happy in the knowlege that I can upload the pictures I come back with to my PC and shate them on here.
That's another thread but I will start that one tomorrow.

Nite Nite all.
Thanks again

Could have saved yourself all the hassle and just removed the USB devices from device manager in the first place ;)
