Upgrade time or not

Im not limited by the d7100 as such. However, i am always after better quality where possible. Now if i can get the d810 cheap and get better quality images then im in. Now if i have to get fx lenses to do that then i would of course have to factor in the cost. My 70-30 is apparently fx but everything else is dx. So i would be looking at a replacement for wide, macro and a walkaround lens .. if the 600mm is good to go on the d810 along with the two teleconverters then im very happy ... question would be should i sell the d7100 and dx lenses to help pay for the others .. comments welcome again please

If you don't have a specific need to keep the D7100, sell it. And I would sell the DX lenses either way if they are replaced w/ better FF versions.

Chances are that the 24mp APS isn't really benefiting you much anyway. People frequently mention how demanding the D8xx is on lenses and technique, but you almost never hear that about the high resolution smaller sensors.... which are even *more* demanding.

We're probably less than 6 months from the launch of the D7300, personally I'd wait for that, full frame is just a money pit.

In what sense better quality?

Good question!

If the OP doesn't feel that his current camera is limiting him in any way, then it's not immediately obvious what a different camera will bring to the party.

FF will offer marginally sharper images - but there are normally bigger gains to be had by improving technique, and most folk won't be able to tell unless they print really big.
In theory it might offer better noise characteristics, but noise is so rarely a genuine issue it's not normally worth worrying about..

I've haven't seen the OP's work but IMO the best return on investment for improved results is to spend the cash on training - i.e. upgrade the photographer, not the kit :)

Very, very good point as I'm certainly no expert at all .. far from it .. but I'm learning more and more. What I want at the end of my "equipment buying" is a camera and lens setup that is as good as I can afford that will last me many years. I don't upgrade as soon as a new model of anything comes out and the only reason I'm actually looking is due to the fact that I can get the D810 cheap and from what I have read, it's a good step up from the D7100. Now I enjoy macro work and I enjoy my 600mm (hopefully upgraded to vr soon). I do use a general lens (18-200) for my holidays along with a wide angel for panoramas. Thats it really. If I can increase the quality of my camera/lens setup then it's down to me to learn as much as I can to improve ..

The money you save now will afford you a "better" upgrade later on when maybe you have a specific need.

FWIW, I often prefer smaller sensors for Macro work (I typically us a 1" sensor). And many prefer crop sensors for long lens/wildlife work... everything is a tradeoff...

There will always be another bargain in the future, I'd stick with what you've got.
Alternatively... if you're upgrading 'cos you just want some new shiny then go for it. Just be honest with yourself as to your reasons.
