Hi all,

I'm in a bit of a tricky situation as to not knowing what camera to pick, really.

The reason for upgrading is primarily for video, I don't have any problems with my 40D and I really do like it in every way for the photos it produces as well as the build quality etc.

But I'm looking to change to a Canon DSLR that has a good video mode as I'm looking to produce more videos and it's useful for projects at University also (Graphic Design student), it opens up quite a few more options for things.

I currently only own one lens, a Canon 50mm 1.8. I haven't really had too much need to get another one and funds have been limited too, but I will be looking to get a lens in the near future which factors as part of my decision.

I'd rather a lens that was a bit wider but was also quite quick as I do quite a bit of low light work.

As I believe there may be some Canon updates on the near horizon I'm also a bit wary of buying a new camera - I can wait for a month or two (Mid Oct) before upgrading but ideally I'd like to do it ASAP.

I can't decide between either picking up a brand new 650D which I've read quite good things about, or going for a second hand 7D/5D Mk2.

Part of what I like about my 40D currently is the size and build quality, I'm a bit :| about buying a new smaller camera as such and this makes me more keen on the 7D/5D Mk2 option.

I could stretch to a second hand 5D, I've seen some going around the £1000 mark which is OK but I'm a bit nervous about spending quite that much, ideally I'd like to spend roughly that on a camera + lens which is where the 7D becomes possibly interesting.

I'm really stuck and not sure what to do or what would be best for me, really.

If anyone could advise then that would be fantastic, thank you :).

What about a 60D ?

That's closer to the 40D if it's simply the lack of video that forces the change.

As for the choice between the 7D & 5D2 - They're really cameras for different things so I'd be considering what you shoot. You mention the costs - remember your will not be able to use ef-s lenses on the 5D2

I had considered the 60D too, I'm unsure as to if I'll hold onto to my 40D at the moment when getting the new camera as well.

From my reading I can't really tell if there's that much difference in terms of video between the say 60D/650D/7D - and also even if the 7D will be a good enough upgrade in terms of everything else to justify the price.

With regards to between the 5D/7D - I shoot quite a lot of 'general' things, dependant on what project it may be. So it sort of needs to be quite versatile and an all rounder, really.

I'd go for the 7D. Although I never used mine for video, it is supposed to be very good. Also is a good 'all-rounder'. Used to use mine for event photography and was brilliant but do try to get some 'L' glass if you can. Hope this helps.

Thanks chap - I do a bit of event stuff and quite a bit of gig photography too, does it perform quite well in low light conditions?

I'd love to get some L glass but I'm not sure which to go for as the most versatile for the price etc - I'm not too clued up on it really so if you have any advice there that'd be great too.

EDIT: A new 7D from One Stop would set me back £850ish - I'd like to hope that second hand ones are roughly £700, maybe a bit more if in a good condition?

I'm worried with the rumours on the horizon that the 7D is soon to be upgraded, I might hold out and see if it does happen and I can then pick up a new one for cheaper than now.

the full frame advantage will shine during gigs and low light situations.

with 7D, maximum acceptable ISO is 3200 to 6400, like all other modern APS-C sensors.

with 5D2, i am perfectly happy with 6400 and can get away with 12800 if really needed.

but, if you are on a tight budget, getting full frame will limit your budget lens choices.

As Wuyan says, the 5D may give better low-light results but is a bit over-kill for eventing. As for glass, I had 70-200 f2.8, 24-105 f4 and a 50mm f1.4.
There are rumours about a 'new' 7D' but will no doubt be silly money when launched and the current 7D does the job.:)

Cheers for the advice chaps - I think the 5D Mk2 will just push it a bit too much when having to get a lens too so I think I'll rule that out - it was more of a fleeting thought if I could pick one up cheap :).

Sorry, with the 7D part (I worded it wrong) I meant that if a 'new' one comes out, I can pick up the current 7D (brand new) for a cheaper price, if that makes sense. I'm not sure if it would drop in price by too much though, really.

yea, thats my plan too :) so far it has came down to £899 on amazon, im hoping it ill come down a bit more (i really dont want a second hand one) i have a 70-200 f4l and 50 1.8 too, I think thats the best thing to do in my opinion as my budget is maximum £899 and I wana get a flash and a good CF card too (I have a Sd for my 500d so no good :() but i didnt know there was a new 7d coming out soon, that should drive down the price :D

I have been thinking about an upgrade recently, and one of my considerations was the possibilty of video, but as far as I can make out the new 650 will continuos auto focus, 60d etc although might auto focus all be it very slow

That's my understanding too.

Personally I don't mind manually focusing so I'm not massively bothered but I'm not sure if that's just me being naive about the advantages of it.

I'm back to seriously considering upping my budget and getting a good 5D Mk2 + Lens combo. Any suggestions anyone? I'll be willing to go second hand for the Camera but probably new for the lens.

A good, affordable lens that isn't going to break the bank and good on the 5D, what do you suggest all :)?

Thanks
