Unusual Olympic Interview line

have you seen how much body armour (head, torso, shins that ive spotted) theyre wearing?

Does that make a difference to the aims of the sport?

Not another thread descended into bickering, flippin eck :bang:

I do not believe that women should not play sport, there are many sports that they can and do play, these are beneficial and in general terms they are not 'unfeminine' or 'brutal' in nature.
I believe in women being 'feminine' ... I do not like to see women fighting as I think it demeans and degrades women in general and is contrary to the natural role of women (and no I don't believe women should be tied to the sink surrounded by children!).

I still say female mud wrestling is good for the nation

I bet someone picks up on the word 'Play' :D

Very surprised, in this day and age I wouldn't hesitate to allow my daughters to go to "self defence" clases  If they got good enough at it to go to the Olympics - so much the better IMHO

Well I'm sorry old man, but if you don't like seeing it, may I suggest turning off the television and not watching it?

I think you'll find we women are quite capable of deciding for ourselves what we do and do not want to do / participate in, and frankly I find your attitude demeaning and degrading.

You do know they gave us the vote, right?

What an odd rant

Women can vote? And men allow that? Next thing you know women will be able to drive  never happen :nono:

Drive yes...park, umm, no :shake:

Oh and Gramps..please do enlighten us, what is the "natural role of women" in your world?

Any sport has an element of risk of injury, that is quite different to a 'sport' which has by design an aim to injure.

So you think it's ok for men to purposefully injure each other in the name of sport?

Why EXACTLY is it ok for one sex & not the other in your view?

What is demeaning & degrading about it for women but not men? & what do you view as the differences between men & women's 'roles' that judge if they should box or not?

So how do you score points?

In rugby you score by placing the ball on the ground in the goal area. To do that 99%+ of the time requires running into/ through a number of hard hitting tackles.

Pretty much no protective equipment is used unlike in boxing.

My point? In contact sports contact is required to score/ win.

So why does it make a difference to you that the contact itself is what scores the point in boxing rather than just being a precursor to scoring?

You think women choosing to do what they want to do, demeans and degrades them? I'm surprised the forum didn't implode in an irony vortex when you posted that.

What do you think about male gymnastics? I mean, it's pretty feminine of them to wear that tight clothing and prance around the floor doing dainty little twirls. Hardly the 'natural role of men' :bonk:

Lol!

My point is that it is a 'violent' sport by nature and that is what makes it different from other sports which, though possibly having a risk of accidental injury, is not essentially based on violence.

and why is it different for women than for men ?

I can see the logic of being against violent sport - period (although i'm not myself) , but being against violent sport for women only becauise it might damage their pretty little faces and make them less attractive is so sexist and outdated its hard to believe you are serious

Actually, a part of me agrees with Gramps, I feel slightly unhappy with female boxers.....

.....but delighted she won!

Nothing wrong with women in contact sports. Most martial arts are in fact much better physically than many 'conventional' sports.

Countering the 'pretty faces' getting hit argument. I would much rather go for a drink with Jade Jones than Nadzeya Ostapchuk!

anyone heard of some lass called Boudica? I heard she was pretty handy back in the day...

I believe Gramps knew here when she was a mere teenager, and even then he was trying to disuade her from, "all this spear and chariot nonsense".

Personally, I think his views on women and sport are appalling.

Ok. While we may disagree with people's views. I think it has been made clear so let's leave it at that. The thread is in danger of going off the original light hearted topic

There's some seriously touching people on here....

I disagree with women boxing - it just doesn't sit right with me due to its brutality - but then again, I don't agree with men's boxing either for the same reason. Pads or no pads, and even with a structured points system to justify it as a sport, boxing is too primal for my liking. I don't mind contact sports like tag and tournament hand-holding but boxing is a step too far for me...

But much of male gymnastics (rings, pommel horse) is based around strength and stamina and is a show of physical performance. Running around with a ribbon on a stick might be a step too far though... ;)

Thats a bit strong and tbh sounds a bit silly. Just because gramps thinks women should be the gentler sex doesnt give posters the right to start insults. Jeez lighten up :shake:

AAARGGGHHHH!!!!!!!

AAARGGGHHHH!!!!!!!

I agree

Bottom line Gramps has a right to his opinion, those who disagree have an equal right to think his opinion is sexist and outdated. Neither side has the right to call the other names.

I know, I'm a big fan of male gymnastics. I was being sarcastic, giving a comparatively narrow minded view about a male sport.

The sooner these archaic perceptions of gender roles are gone the better for society.

:dummy:

YOUR way is incorrect.

Back to the original topic......... I don't understand why anyone would want to box / MMA / kick the crap out of each other, but if that's what they want to do as a sport, then let them.

and you are blind to the irony that what it says could equally apply to someone who can't spell 'really' - still if you don't mind looking like an illiterate that's your perogative

Yes it is my perogative and i shall take it. So would you like to bring the thread back on topic considering it was you who took it off topic to focus the attention on my sig??

You're treading on thin ice, wind your neck in.

For all of you who wish to bicker and snipe at each other maybe you should go elsewhere to conduct in your infantile behaviour. We can assist you in this if required.....
