Undue worry over ebola or due diligence

I suspect that's media hype too.
They don't have to desperately search for anyone.
The flight will have a passenger manifest, can't board a flight in the US now without valid ID. All traceable.
That's in theory of course, but I doubt they're "desperately searching" for anyone.

That was was a film wasn't it desperately searching for Susan or similar :-)

Nigeria has managed to eradicate the virus, despite having a poorer healthcare system than in anywhere in the west, and also having infected people arrive on flights. So that gives you an idea of how worried you should be. As has been said; it's a horrible situation for people in rural west Africa, but there's little for us to worry about here.

Ditto Senegal

its worth noting that both nigeria and senegal while third world are not absolute s***holes like Liberia , Siera Leone, and Equitorial Guinea

This Ebola outbreak is causing more concern than Jo public are being made aware of....trust me

Ebola is a huge problem in western Africa and is a legitimate cause for concern in that context. It is not something for us to worry about over here.

Maybe not yet......
Not ever. Not unless something catastrophic happens to our healthcare infrastructure first. And even then, EVD would be pretty far down the list of pressing concerns.

Other than taking sensible precautions, precisely nobody working in day-to-day medicine in the UK is losing any sleep over Ebola.

Acutely, it is. Argus is currently heading towards Sierra Leone with about 750 crew, Royal Marines, doctors and medical staff embarked. Let's hope none of them contract the virus.

I hope not, but one or two of them might. It's still nothing for most people in the UK, or western world, to worry about.

Why do people love this Ebola spook story so much?

Out of interest, do you know what happens if they do? They get put ashore and taken to a Sierra Leone hospital.

The medical crew on board have orders not to treat anybody with ebola.

From where did you get that information, Jonathan ?

I would suspect the orders are not to treat any indigenous population with ebola... that is they are there to offer support services , not front line treatment. I honestly can't imagine the medics refusing to treat a member of RM or ships company who had the disease (although they'd probably be medivaced pretty quickly)

The MOD stated on Wednesday that any service personnel who (may) contract the Ebola virus are not automatically guaranteed repatriation for treatment.

And the first Spanish nurse to contract it has now tested negative for the virus. Raises hopes for her full recovery.

I don't, I guess they will get their orders once they get in theatre. Who knows how it will unfold.

According to one report http://www.theguardian.com/world/2014/oct/14/crew-british-hospital-ship-sierra-leone-ebola-mission

What the ship will not do is treat anyone who contracts Ebola. Every time a marine or medic goes on shore, he or she will be asked to fill in a questionnaire about contacts with local people. If they have had contact, their temperature will be taken twice a day and if there are concerns that they have Ebola they will be evacuated to a British-run facility onshore.

An interview on Today. It was last week and I don't recall who was being interviewed but from the tone it was "somebody in authority" at the navy.

The interviewer was incredulous and asked the question a number of different ways to be sure but there was no doubt in the answer: we are parking a fully equipped hospital off the coast of Sierra Leone and the one thing the doctors on board are not allowed to treat is ebola. They are there to deal with injuries or any other illness for the crew only but they will not under any circumstances allow somebody they suspect of having ebola on board. When you think about it, this is perfectly sensible but it was a surprise to hear it.

Actually it may have been the captain. 30 seconds in - clear question, clear answer. I think it's safe to assume that those are his orders.

It's not just that though is it if you listen to it. It's a platform to provide aviation and logistical support to the ongoing crisis, there is a fully equipped field hospital ashore. Makes perfect sense to keep the ship sterile. The last thing you want is a plague ship.

Nothing like having the full support of your government when being sent somewhere dangerous is there. :meh: :indifferent:

Um, yes, which is why I said

Precisely. Quite charming isn't it :(

Nice.......

http://www.hoax-slayer.com/bleach-cure-ebola-hoax.shtml

That's a particularly nasty hoax playing on fears of ebola. A similar one has apparently already killed 2 people. That's more than ebola has in Europe.

You'd have to be a moron to believe that ... mind you looking at the general inteligence of the population...

wasn't it 'drinking salt water can cure ebola' which killed two people (neither of whom actually had ebola)in nigeria

Although I agree with all the bits I bothered to watch, isn't this rather like the Express criticising people for worrying about the weather? I haven't kept track but I'd be amazed if Fox were blameless in the frenzy.

Indeed, but at least someone is actually talking some sense in the media some of the time.

I can see the school bit getting 'interesting' as we get into flu / Winter vomiting virus season.

I got sick with a mystery illness right when swine flu was in vogue, phoned up to see a doc and was told it was swine flu over the phone, to stay at home for 2 weeks. I hadn't so much as had a sniffle. Think I may have to go down the surgery and tell tall tales about my trips to West Africa then suddenly become ill at the counter...

my freind theresa who's a practice nurse in MK says they've had over 30 people coming in thinking they've got ebola

do you know anyone who's got ebola ? No
have you been to west africa in the last month ? No
do you know anyone who's been to west africa in the last month ? No

so why the f*** do you think you've got ebola then you hypochondriac timewaster ? , well i was reading this thing on the internet....
