I have an account with windows Live. I stored emails in folders on the page that comes up when I sign in. Sorry what is PST?
That's a sneaky trick.Have you seen this: http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/technology-36367221
Microsoft have given you a free upgrade, no charge and you is complaining......?
Actually you did authorize it, maybe without realizing it, but the fact remains. Widows 10 is light years ahead of the previous versions and will keep getting better. You can choose not to accept updates, but it's a little bit of a different approach, since you have to download a tool and use it to do so. You can choose not to allow them to collect stats on use if you don't want to, but actually you will do better if you allow it.On Thursday this week Microsoft updated my computer to Windows10 from windows 8.1. I was a bit put out by this as I had not requested or authorised this update. I had heard that W10 was rubbish compared to previous systems. However I have now found my computer to be faster, and my concerns that it would mess up my printer have been found to be wrong, it prints and scans better now. I am still annoyed that it was done without my approval , but up to now it has been an improvement.
That's a sneaky trick.
Change the function of how the cross to close a window or close a program has worked for decades to trick people into installing Win10.No doubt those that think M$ can do no wrong will be along to try and justify that in some way.

The revenue stream is shifted to the app store where you can buy all sorts of software. So desperate are they to inflict this "flying turd of an OS" on everyone it makes you wonder what they will be charging for subscribing to it.
After all in the past they made shedloads of money from the upgrades but now what will they do to get revenue?

Just don't go there if you are not interested, simple. And even if you "get" Win 10 Pro you apparently cannot turnoff the App store......to do so completely requires W10 Enterprise![]()
Maybe it comes under the heading of a smart business plan in their eyes?, but I'm with you !That's a sneaky trick.![]()

I can't believe that a company like M$ would make such a basic error, but given the very remote possibility that it was a coding error, its not beyond the realms of possibility that it was a coding error.
I wouldn't know as I don't deal in illegal products. Now what illegal product does that remind me of.........!
Its not a coding error or a nasty trick, its a case of a person making assumptions instead of reading everything first. Its all there in the window, it says to unchecked the box if you don't want to proceed with the free update, we have been having to unchecked boxes for unwanted software every time we get a download off the net for years.flying turd? oh please.
subscribing? as said, not happening.
revenue? MS have their fingers in many pies. like apple they now have their own premium hardware which is a good money spinner.
i really wish people would stop spouting such horlicks.
as for the "nasty trick", its not beyond the realms of possibility that it was a coding error. again, not everything is a case to get the tin foil out.
why do you think you get patch tuesday every fortnightI can't believe that a company like M$ would make such a basic error, but given the very remote possibility that it was a coding error,
How many more basic coding errors are there?
Because they read? You want the bit that says "Click here to change upgrade schedule or cancel scheduled upgrade"
I want to know why none of the people in my office that are still using Windows 7 have found themselves moved to Windows 10 against their will, unlike a small subsection of forumites?
Yep opt out not opt in clever marketing, which IMO should be illegalIt's the same as the classic insurance auto-renual trick and something I use at work all the time - "I'm going to do this, tell me if you don't want me to". No one ever tells me not to...
Oh I never got conned, I read the info when the pop ups started to appear searched the web and found the completely dismiss button.I suppose there is a small group that should avoid computers altogether.
The X has always been a dismiss button up till now.

The discussion is about the back door underhand ways that mickey soft is trying to capture the less aware section of the market.

Correct! the answer isPlease forgive me if I consider this as arrogant and intolerant, and you have given an example of why some people cannot follow. Please explain what PEBKAC means.
Well if i hit the red X now, you all disappear so it is for meThe X is a close window button. It's never been a cancel or dismiss button.
maybe it does put the "action" into limbo,.X usually means take no action.
wut? you mean the pre-release beta program or are you claiming MS are still in a beta stage with W10?Windows 10 was and is free as Microsoft are using us the consumer as beta testers
why do you think you get patch tuesday every fortnightsoftware is never perfect, no matter what software house codes it.
And as for updates, you'd all be pretty peed off if Fuji never released another firmware upgrade for your cameras wouldn't you?
yeah and dont get me started on not running updates. for good reason MS switched that ability off in 10.I don't - I have never updated either XP or Win7 and don't get problems with viruses because I use VMs to browse and don't have any browser on my real computers.
Lol you looked at that and missed the great big letters saying it will auto update MONDAY and to cancel click here...my wife sometimes buys the wrong things at the store because she doesn't read labels, is that because the manufacturer mislead her? No, the information is there, pay attention. Its even more important on a computer.
So where's the "it says to unchecked the box" you mentioned in post 95?
The whole point here is that MS have decided to give Win 10 as a default, instead of the subscriber having to make a conscious effort to accept it.
In other words, TOTALLY sneaky!
Are you saying that W10 auto upgrades everything they throw at you?yeah and dont get me started on not running updates. for good reason MS switched that ability off in 10.

and didnt we debunk running VM as secure in the thread the other week where VM host vulnerabilities were pointed out?

Well if I'm operating in such an incredibly insecure environment why have I never been hacked or had to worry about all the malware supposedly waiting to descend upon me and rip me to shreds?
Virtually all of the attacks are now aimed at companies and corporations who definitely DO need all the protection they can get.
The problem with these companies and corporations is that networks have now become so big and unwieldy that true security is almost impossible - e.g Sony, The OPM, Linkedin, etc, etc, etc.
In addition no AV etc can protect you against zero day exploits which by definition have never been seen before.
.
lets face it they were dammed either way..
on the flip side if they'd offered this as a free update and made it much harder to get it, they'd be accused of trying to swindle the consumer out of getting a £100~ update for free.
