Unauthorised computer update

I have an account with windows Live. I stored emails in folders on the page that comes up when I sign in. Sorry what is PST?

Microsoft have given you a free upgrade, no charge and you is complaining......?

I have a very very slow internet connection - about 0.1Mb/s , I don't want something as large as an OS downloading on it free or not as it will make both my pc and every other net connected device in the house unusuable for the long period of time the download will take.

On Thursday this week Microsoft updated my computer to Windows10 from windows 8.1. I was a bit put out by this as I had not requested or authorised this update. I had heard that W10 was rubbish compared to previous systems. However I have now found my computer to be faster, and my concerns that it would mess up my printer have been found to be wrong, it prints and scans better now. I am still annoyed that it was done without my approval , but up to now it has been an improvement.
Actually you did authorize it, maybe without realizing it, but the fact remains. Widows 10 is light years ahead of the previous versions and will keep getting better. You can choose not to accept updates, but it's a little bit of a different approach, since you have to download a tool and use it to do so. You can choose not to allow them to collect stats on use if you don't want to, but actually you will do better if you allow it.

That's a sneaky trick. o_O

Change the function of how the cross to close a window or close a program has worked for decades to trick people into installing Win10. No doubt those that think M$ can do no wrong will be along to try and justify that in some way. :(

So desperate are they to inflict this "flying turd of an OS" on everyone it makes you wonder what they will be charging for subscribing to it.

After all in the past they made shedloads of money from the upgrades but now what will they do to get revenue?
.

The revenue stream is shifted to the app store where you can buy all sorts of software.

And even if you "get" Win 10 Pro you apparently cannot turnoff the App store......to do so completely requires W10 Enterprise :(

Now what illegal product does that remind me of.........!

Just don't go there if you are not interested, simple. :) You cannot turn off the googleplay store or the Apples app store either, they are on the net, you can't turn off the net without disconnecting from it.

flying turd? oh please.

subscribing? as said, not happening.

revenue? MS have their fingers in many pies. like apple they now have their own premium hardware which is a good money spinner.

i really wish people would stop spouting such horlicks.

as for the "nasty trick", its not beyond the realms of possibility that it was a coding error. again, not everything is a case to get the tin foil out.

I can't believe that a company like M$ would make such a basic error, but given the very remote possibility that it was a coding error,
How many more basic coding errors are there?

Its not a coding error or a nasty trick, its a case of a person making assumptions instead of reading everything first. Its all there in the window, it says to unchecked the box if you don't want to proceed with the free update, we have been having to unchecked boxes for unwanted software every time we get a download off the net for years.

why do you think you get patch tuesday every fortnight ;) software is never perfect, no matter what software house codes it.

It's the same as the classic insurance auto-renual trick and something I use at work all the time - "I'm going to do this, tell me if you don't want me to". No one ever tells me not to...

Lol you looked at that and missed the great big letters saying it will auto update MONDAY and to cancel click here...my wife sometimes buys the wrong things at the store because she doesn't read labels, is that because the manufacturer mislead her? No, the information is there, pay attention. Its even more important on a computer.

You want the bit that says "Click here to change upgrade schedule or cancel scheduled upgrade"

I want to know why none of the people in my office that are still using Windows 7 have found themselves moved to Windows 10 against their will, unlike a small subsection of forumites?

Because they read?
I suppose there is a small group that should avoid computers altogether.
We used to call it PEBKAC.

Yep opt out not opt in clever marketing, which IMO should be illegal

Oh I never got conned, I read the info when the pop ups started to appear searched the web and found the completely dismiss button.
The discussion is about the back door underhand ways that mickey soft is trying to capture the less aware section of the market.

The X has always been a dismiss button up till now.

Please forgive me if I consider this as arrogant and intolerant, and you have given an example of why some people cannot follow. Please explain what PEBKAC means.

The X is a close window button. It's never been a cancel or dismiss button.

... not everything is a case to get the tin foil out.

Tin foil hats are deliberate misinformation from the 3 letter agencies or possibly aliens - years ago a check was done on how well they attenuated the signals floating in the ether:

http://www.theatlantic.com/health/a...the-government-to-track-your-thoughts/262998/

"While the MIT guys' tongue-in-cheek conclusion -- "the current helmet craze is likely to have been propagated by the Government, possibly with the involvement of the FCC" -- maybe goes a few steps too far, their study at least shows that foil helmets fail at, and even counteract, their intended purpose. That, or the students are aliens who fabricated these results in an effort to get you to take your perfectly functional helmet off."

They really ARE out to get you...:LOL::LOL:

They're probably running enterprise edition.

Windows 10 was and is free as Microsoft are using us the consumer as beta testers, consequently saving a s*** load of money not paying developers to find the bugs.

Brilliant business strategy I call that.

I find Windows 10 great, but then I work in IT and have to learn new technologies for my job.

And as for updates, you'd all be pretty peed off if Fuji never released another firmware upgrade for your cameras wouldn't you?

Correct! the answer is
Problem Exists Between Keyboard And Chair.

The X is a close window button. It's never been a cancel or dismiss button.
Well if i hit the red X now, you all disappear so it is for me
X usually means take no action.
maybe it does put the "action" into limbo,.
But that's good enough for me also.

I don't - I have never updated either XP or Win7 and don't get problems with viruses because I use VMs to browse and don't have any browser on my real computers.

I have Canon cameras and have NEVER updated them either and they still work perfectly.:)

yeah and dont get me started on not running updates. for good reason MS switched that ability off in 10.

and didnt we debunk running VM as secure in the thread the other week where VM host vulnerabilities were pointed out?

So where's the "it says to unchecked the box" you mentioned in post 95?

The whole point here is that MS have decided to give Win 10 as a default, instead of the subscriber having to make a conscious effort to accept it.

In other words, TOTALLY sneaky!

lets face it they were dammed either way..

on the flip side if they'd offered this as a free update and made it much harder to get it, they'd be accused of trying to swindle the consumer out of getting a £100~ update for free.

Are you saying that W10 auto upgrades everything they throw at you?
Looking a list of updates that are available on W7 quite a few are irrelevant to me, I don't have the programmes or extensions installed or I never use them.
So I cherry pick what is of use.

BTW M$ seems to be sulking I've not had an important up date since I blocked W10 :D

Well if I'm operating in such an incredibly insecure environment why have I never been hacked or had to worry about all the malware supposedly waiting to descend upon me and rip me to shreds?

Virtually all of the attacks are now aimed at companies and corporations who definitely DO need all the protection they can get.

The problem with these companies and corporations is that networks have now become so big and unwieldy that true security is almost impossible - e.g Sony, The OPM, Linkedin, etc, etc, etc.

In addition no AV etc can protect you against zero day exploits which by definition have never been seen before.

Don't get me started on the paranoia that the world and his neighbour is out to get your computer unless you update the OS every couple of weeks!

I ran XP and Vista for years without updating without any problems.

Oh yes and while I mentioned XP, where are all the news stories of folk attacking WinXP, since MS stopped support in 2014?

There were all sorts of scare stories then but sweet FA happened!

i didnt say insecure, believing it is MORE secure using VM may be a little misleading. i suspect its a happy coincidence youve not had any issues.

same way as i havent and dont use VM.

It's still absolutely SNEAKY, Neil !
