Grass is GREEN, why did no-one tell me !!!!!

I usually go to Corfu twice a year, so as I haven't been for two years, I'll close my eyes, sip a Metaxa and listen to Mikis Theodorakis. Now, that's saved me a bundle! :)

It hit 50°C in the conservatory this morning and was 27° in the shade outside. Just enough breeze on the g*lf course to keep me cool under the umbrella.

Just a mild 27 °C here in the Irish north east :/

Wind is in the east so cooler on coast this side, it was 26C briefly about 4pm
6.4C at 6am

Forecast 28 tomorrow, 30 Thursday - Saturday, 27 Sunday, hopefully 22 Monay onwards. Not a drop of rain for two months, and if that wasn't enough, there have been fires, believed to be started deliberatley

and if that wasn't enough, there have been fires, believed to be started deliberatley

There might be some that are started deliberately but I reckon the vast majority, if not all, are a result of human activity.

Fingers crossed that the relatively small grass fires we have had around here so far are the only ones.

It's so hot on our patio even under the brolly..34C today..that we spend more time in the house.

To hot to sleep hence this post at 0034.

Due 35C Thursday/Friday ..thats the Met Office figure ..so under the brolly it will be 38C.. This time,it looks ,from the BBC weather map for Monday, that here in Gloucetser we're going to get downpours with thunderstorms...at last. I've been on a ladder watering our neighbour's three plant/shrubs in pots. They've been away for 17 days..where ,I have no idea.

On Friday my wife's off to visit her friend in Verwood (Dorset 10 miles north of Bournemouth) and they're going to the Ellingham Show (near Ringwood) on Saturday. Good luck with that one,I told her. I've advised her to take a brolly to protect her from the searing sun. Her friend and husband are taking their dog on the basis that if it's too hot he'll take it back home. It will be too hot.

South facing, the same as my kitchen?

East but the South aspect is open too. When we're both out. the windows all get closed but I'm tempted to start leaving the small vents open and making sure the house to conservatory door is triple locked. To be fair, the conservatory does cool down reasonably fast once all the windows and doors are opened wide.

I don't think this time will be as bad as last one. The night time temperature drops to below 20c every day, so should possible to cool down and have a good sleep. Feels like it's the normal hottest British summer, rather than the unbearable 28c nighttime temperature last time.

But we are having an impromptu beach break this weekend anyway, because of hot weather.

make the most of it i say it is going to be grim putting the heating on in winter, price of gas is going to through the roof
martin lewis saying even the experts are under where it is going to be , average bills will be £400/month

Some very red "grockles" around here at the moment. You can bring a tourist to the seaside but they often leave their common sense at home! It seems to be a case of "I'm on me holidays and I'm going to get a tan!" Also plenty on inflatables. Luckily it was an onshore breeze today or there would have been some callouts for the lifeboats. Some still managing to drift half a mile down the beach and get lost!!!

I saw my 74 year old neighbopur kneeling on his driveway at 2.15pm weeding it. No hat on. The temperature in the direct sunlight was 38C.(100.4F)

Under the patio brolly this afternoon it got to 35C. The kids next door ..three of them all boys 9-12 were playing in the hot tub. I thought girls were the screamers. The little one is terrible for that. About 15 minutes later, when I'd gone inside for a bit of peace and quiet I saw mom out on the front by their car and dashed out pretending to get something from our car. I mentioined to her how debilitating the heat was and that ':Not many people realise just how hot it is in direct sunlight and that my thermomneter was showing just under 38C (100F).

It did the trick. The kids were called inside and tranquility resumed :D

We've managed to get our gas reading down to 3 units a week. I keep a written record going back several years now. I take the readings every Saturday morning at 8.00am. The electric 67 (Kw/hour ??) The only gas we have, though, is the combi boiler. We have an induction hob and I think they use quite a bit.

We are very fortunate, at least in the medium term. Our very small house id heated solely by a multifuel stove burning anthracite, no radiators., no gas supplies. We managed to get two deliveries of 1.2 tons each at last years prices so we are good heating-wise for at least 18 months/2 years. Electricity is a different matter, we have quite an electricity load with a 600 litre fish tank, a garden pond, two freezers and two fridges so any rise in electricity prices is a problem. What doesn't help is the electricity company's cynical ploy in raising the standing charge so that even if I stopped using electricity altogether I would still end up paying more for that particular fee. I'm no socialist but there are some things that should be in public ownership and the utility companies are up there at the top, followed by the railways who give their shareholders dividends while at the same time taking subsidies from the government effectively meaning that Joe Public pays railway company's shareholders.

This, from the website Fullfact.org and relates to a report from 2018:

The government (on average) now subsidises the railway industry by about three times as much as in the years just before legislation to privatise it came into place, almost 25 years ago exactly. That’s taking into account inflation, which is the change in how much things cost over time.

And further in the report:

Net government support to the rail industry in Great Britain for 2017/18 was £6.4 billion, of which £2.1 billion was for HS2. This financial support is the level of funding the government provides towards “operating, maintaining, renewing and enhancing the railway”.

I suppose it's a bit off topic, but I needed a quick rant.

Heard someone from the London Fire Service on TV this morning asking people not to use disposable barbeques in public areas due to the very high fire risk.

I was surprised they did not extend that request to all barbeques. While disposable barbeques have a particular risk as they are often put directly on the ground, all barbeques(and there are many which while not disposable are very portable) pose a fire risk.

I hope that everyone will be sensible and not have a barbeque at all in any public area. So far fairly close to us I know of only one occasion when people were going to have a barbeque until local rangers stopped them.

M&S have stopped selling disposable BBQs.

The problem with disposable BBQs is they're, well, disposable. There have been occasions where people have thrown them in the bin or just left them in situ and buggering off home!

It's extremely hot outside under the sun, you know what would be even better? Light up a heat source and stand next to it to very inefficiently overcook some meat.

Sorry, I don't understand why anyone would want to have BBQ when it's this hot.

Yes, I saw a photo from, I think NW Scotland, where a wheelie bin had partially melted because someone put a disposable barbeque in it!

The problem with portable, but non disposable barbeques is what people do with the embers when they have finished. I suspect tip them on the ground.

I'm really struggling in this heat, not been venturing outside until after dark, and dare not ride the motorbike because the worst heatstroke I ever suffered was on a motorbike.

So I am staying inside but that's not helped by the fact I am running a class a amp on the hi fi which heats the room up even bloody more.

Could go to the beach, but some b*****d from Greenpeace will just start chucking buckets of water over me and try and drag me back into the sea!

#neversatisfiedofcornwall

Could be worse, it could be Japanese or Norwegians taking an interest in you on the beach...

It has now hit the 30C mark where I am. All windows open and the curtains at the back closed, going to close the front ones now.

Currently 31C in my static caravan ... with the fan on and every window and door open, blinds angled on the sunny side. I'll be outside in my hammock chair with an ice lolly in the shade!

It is a bit much now. All windows were shut hours ago once it was over about 25c outside. Put up extra shades on sunny side of house which has helped a bit as afternoon soon then heats up downstairs all the more.

It's bizarre for me, working in a large lab facility with offices at 23 and labs at 20. Went for a lunchtime walk to remind myself what's happening in the real world.

Not off topic atall. Good rant. I love to read a rant..I'm partial to them myself...:D Anyway, energy costs are the talk of every phone-in and news bulletin in conjunction with this hot weather..ie what's coming down the line as we move into autumn and winter. A lot of electricity-consuming items there.

That standing charge is an absolutre rip-off. Ours is 48p a day. The poor people who can only pay 'as you go' are charged even more. 53p per day. That's punishment for having the bad fortune of being poor.Agree re utilities/transport snot being in private hands.

Just sat outside this evening - 9pm, pleasantly warm, doing our French lessons, then a gentle surf.

It would be a lot warmer in France!

The mind boggles that people still do this .We get it every time there's excessive heat. Do they never watch or listen to the news ?

Indeed, my wife has a black car and this afternoon I sat in it with the windows closed to see what it was like, highly unpleasant. If I had been unable to get out I would guess I had about ten minutes before I went unconscious; and I'm not wearing a fur coat!

I have a white van and the temperature must have been six or seven degrees lower than my wife's car; just goes to show what white paint can do for keeping things cooler.
