I remember the days when Audi were considered the poor mans BMW.
Not any more!

However there are folk with the basic 116d that act like they had a Bentley continental

I've breve had problems driving rear wheel drive cars. Look at your driving as unless your being hamfisted, you won't go into a ditch in a Mercedes or BMW, even if it's snowing.
If you had special training (which you have) then you are fine. The point is that handling of rwd cars is unintuitive in challenging situations

So is the false security of 4wd as it really doesn't help you through fast corners where traction brakes. Driving style for and against and adjusting speed is irrespective of fwd, rwd, awd.

However if you want, plenty of models from bmw and Mercedes about with awd. And also with fwd.

RWD is much more likely to spin out in a horrible way after a slight mistake or even wet / icy patch.

I know there are X5 / X3 / ML which are fine and also the dreaded A / B class throwaways. However far too many people have BMWs these days, it is nothing special any more.

Neither are cheap old jap cars ;) not sure what the special point is aimed at? Just because you don't get how to respond to rwd that that doesn't mean other people don't?

It isn't unintuitive at all. Point the car in the direction you wish to go in, treat the car with respect it will not kill you or go sideways. It's fine.

The sheer fact you either need to either drift or pensioner these cars in the bend is scary. Also rear wheels are always trying to overtake the front in case of the smallest incentive on the road surface. I would only hope that ESP has gone a long way making the reps much safer in their 5-series.

My point is you don't buy those cars because they are [not] special, but rather because you like some technical aspect or at least a price tag. Too many people still get orgasm when they go to a dealership of a certain brand. :) That probably includes a BMW mini hence this point is relevant to this thread. A special car is perhaps something not mass produced in large numbers or just pretty rare and has some unique qualities.

In my opinion the only people concerned with such matters are those that don't have one. And it goes for nearly any product in life...In my case when we were looking at a little run about I did want a 'grown up' car feel to it. For me that means basic stuff like full climate control, a decent sound system with integrated multi media options, HID lights, preferably swivelling and auto full beams, leather interior, decent gearbox, a bit of power, and when you close the door a nice solid sound. Oh and quiet and refined whilst driving it...

Not sure a £6K Dacia, to name one, will provide such elementary experiences to me...Hence there is a really good market for vehicles like the Mini or other premium smaller cars...

You don't need to drift or drive at. 20mph to take corners in rwd cars. ESP is not needed unless you over Cook it. If you need esp to keep you safe you're not driving properly.
