I got a Sigma 150 for xmas which is enormous fun, but if I wanted to get an even more magnified image, are extension tubes the way forward? If so, can anyone recommend?

cheers

Tubes will increase the magnification more but you'll need quick a stack on a 150 to get a big improvement. The light you lose will probably negate the result.

Are you talking Canon or Nikon here? If it's Canon, then the MP-E65 lens is the next step upwards. Alternatively you should step down in focal length and get a 50 or 60mm macro then the tubes would have a bigger impact.

thanks bob

Its for Canon 400d

I cant get another macro lens 3 weeks after getting the Sigma, I would be divorced by the end of the month

if tubes wont work, then I will have to make do with what Ive got. Serves me right for not doing enough research :bonk:

Tubes made a vast difference on my tamron 90. It seemed to give me more than 2x the magnification of the lens alone.
I use high f number to get more DOF in macro shots (the closer you get the less DOF you have) but this can mean i have light issues. And because i cant afford a macro flash i made this up

hahaha, that is the coolest macro light i have seen, could have saved myself a few quid. Patent it quickly :D

I never thought this would be much of a revelation to other macro shooters. Its not my idea, i read about it somewhere on the net ages ago. Maybe i should start a thread on it to pass the idea along.

Dan,

Adding extension to a 90mm will have a greater effect than adding the same extension on a 150mm.
In rough terms, a 50mm extension will double the mag on your 90mm but it would require 75mm to achieve the same on the 150mm. These figures don't account for the internal extension of the lens but these parameters generally have a close relationship to the focal length. The 50% more tubing will give a larger light loss on the 150 which is probably a slower lens to start with...I only have details for Canon's own macro's but longer normally becomes slower to keep the price within reasonable limits.

I managed to get some Jessops Auto Extension tubes from
the Deansgate branch on Sunday and at 29 quid they are a
buy. Made quite a difference to my Sigma 50mm macro.

I would ring around a few of the local stores to you as i'm
sure some will still have old stock of these

I'm pretty certain the 150mm is f/2.8, the same as the shorter ones.:)

I had a play with ext tubes and a 1.4x Tc once, on my 20D with Sigma 150mm.

20D +Sigma 150mm

20D + Sigma +36mm ext tubes + Sigma 1.4x TC

They are not 'brilliant' shot, as the ladybird would not stop moving!! (can't remember if these were cropped or not?)
I have a Flickr contact called Brian-D who uses this combo quite often and has some stunning shots in his stream.

thanks for all the info guys :D

lmao at the macro flash conversion - pure genius.

I am getting a 2x TC for different reasons ie not macro use, so that will make a difference. I was just unsure of the tubes though. They are so cheap, it looks like I will just get some, and see what happens. Worst case scenario, Ive wasted £30.

Just tried several lenses on the Jesspos extension rings and found the kit lens 18-55 brought things in the closest.
