Trivial Things That Really Shouldn't Annoy You, But Do!

Spelling and grammar doesn't bother me in general.

It annoys the hell out of me.
I can think of far worse examples which are used day in and day out.

I can't stand it when people put an apostrophe in 'photo's' where it doesn't belong. 'I love to take photo's of .....'. It bothers me even more when I see professional photographers use it. Spelling and grammar doesn't bother me in general but this gets to me.

I'm not sure - if you're referring to a photo (although the word is a bit U.S) and you're simply making it a plural then I agree that the word is photos. However, surely if you're using the word photo's as a contraction of photographs then it would be correct to use an apostrophe?

No, it wouldn't.

A contraction is where you join 2 words. Photo is an abbreviation, photos is plural therefore no apostrophe required.

Or spell lens as lens.

Exactly.
The only type of contraction that would apply to is if someone is contracting "photo is"; eg " that photo's beautiful ".

Watching TV, cat jumps up, paws you to make its bed, piercing clothes and skin.

Here's something which annoys me. On Facebook, there's a page for photographs of the area which people deem to be beautiful. There's loads of very lovely photographs on there but there's this one chap who posts the most over processed images I've ever seen, he really goes to town. The people on the page post lots of comments saying 'Ooh, how do you manage to capture such beautiful photographs - look at the colours, they're amazing.

That. That's what annoys me - that people think they're natural when they're quite the opposite and also that he doesn't correct them. He posts about five a day at the moment.

Make some 'innocent' comments like 'hardcore processing! Could you post the original so I can see what a difference it makes?'
:D

I've tried - it's like water off a ducks back - he posted a slightly more natural one the other day and I mentioned that I much preferred the natural processing to his usual style. Nothing. I think the lure of the compliment is too strong for him.

UK based Facebook users spelling words US style, color, favorite etc makes my blood boil and I become incandescent with rage :p

:agree:

Seeing the Union Flag referred to as the "Jack" when it's on land. ;)

Apologies in advance for this :sorry: Even on a ship it is only the Union Jack when it is being flown from the small mast, called the Jackstaff, provided for that purpose on the bow of RN warships.:exit:

Congratulations - you have been infected with the photography virus, and facebook can never look the same again. ;)

More just from this morning, and it's not even 9:00am yet!

Slow cyclists, normally on Boris bikes who fight their way to the front of every set of lights to be right at the front of the ASZ. Then set off slow drifting across the road so you have to wait for them to settle down before you can overtake and then come to the next set of lights they do it all over again. If the same set of cyclists are overtaking you at every stretch of road, what are you trying to prove by holding them up at every junction!

Anyone who calls their group of friends their squad.

The use of the word bae.

People who use the lift to go up one just one floor.

People who use the attended luggage gates at train stations despite having no sizable luggage all because they are too damn lazy to remove their ticket from their wallet.

Attendants who operate said luggage gates by standing in the gate itself holding it open. It's now no larger than a regular ticket gate you moron!

It looks like the last sentence contradicts the rest. Or did I misunderstand something.

Seems like the Boris-bikers are pushing their way in front of the speedier cyclists while waiting at traffic lights, then holding them back after the lights go green.

I suppose it could be argued that the "graph" has been omitted from photographs to contract it to photos so the apostrophe might be appropriate. I have to admit that I sometimes use one in 'phone.

That'll teach me to read the last page!!!

A current TV advert missed what it was for but some says hell yes,try stopping the kids saying now its on TV.

No Nod, I was put firmly in my place over that. :D

Another chief irritant/annoyance for me is walking around town and everybody (under 35) being obsessed with and staring at their phones. It shouldn't annoy me but it does!

I annoys me too, especially when they walk into me. Also frightens me when they cross the road the same way.

Parents parking outside the school gates. :banghead::mad:

It's not as if the car park is any further, FGS!!!! :dummy:

My earlier posting provided this link, which disputes that fact. As I said before the differing terms don't bother me, but seeing the Union Jack (or Flag) upside down irritates the hell out of me.

It's just another flag - I'm not sure I'd even look at it long enough to see whether it had a right & wrong way up.

Embarrassingly enough I couldn't tell which way is up either.
Its a daft design anyway :D

Yup, a selection of crosses from non-British saints? How dare they choose a blatantly religious set of symbols to represent us all?

Looking at your moniker, this is a maritime issue - flying the flag upside down is an indication the the ship is in distress. Still valid today if the ship is without any power.

A jack is a smaller version of the flag for when the full sized one would be too large. The flag makes the staff a Jackshaft, not the other way round.

This is all based on a misunderstanding of the origins of my user ID:
Now you posted that link, I do remember saying before
(Although I prefer my version :D )
