Im looking for a tripod for my 550d and sigma 150-500.

I've seen red snapper but not sure what type head?

Any suggestions?

It depends on what you want to use it for.

I shoot landscapes and use a Manfrotto 405 geared head, this enables me to make precise adjustments to, for example, level a horizon. It would however be shocking to use for birdwatching!

Your main choices are a three way head (precise but a little cumbersome), a ball head (a good all rounder usually), a pistol grip head (a variation on a ball head with quicker adjustment) and then all sorts of specialist heads like panoramic, gimbal etc.

I got a manfrotto a few years ago and to be honest I wont use anything else now, really good solid tripod, lightweight yet strong and sturdy.

Head wise its what ever you prefer, whether it be a heavy duty ball head or a more classic style of head, which ever get a heavy duty one as that sigma is no light weight.

My personal preference is for a ball head. But get a decent one whatever you do, otherwise you'll only end up buying twice.

Hi Brad

I've a Velbon Tripod and head listed in the classifieds, in virtually brand new condition - as I've not really used it, hence why it's for sale.

As has been said above, the other option you have is a ball head - I tried both and decided I didn't like a ball head on a tripod.

have you had a look at the manfrotto 058b? I've got one and I absolutely Love it. the only down side to it thats its quite heavy.

I'd suggest something like the Giottos GTMTL9351B with the two way column, in addition to getting the usual support you can also get to some unusual angles and really low to the ground.

Value for money, well engineered and able to take the 150-500 with ease I would also recommend the Redsnapper RS324 legs + RSH12 Ball head... (12/10Kg rating)

The only thing the Redsnapper doesn't have is the 'tiltable' centre column, it does come with an extra, shorter column that can be changed quickly.

The legs/head are extremely well engineered, the ball head is super smooth and uses Arca Swiss style plates, with very good tension adjustment and a silky smooth pan...

Having been using the entry level Benro and Manfrotto ball heads from colleagues, I was a bit shocked when I got the redsnapper, the legs go very high without having to extend the centre column, and so beefy. The head was so well engineered, I am amazed it's not more popular for the money..

(And it comes with a nice padded bag with comfortable strap).

I otherwise would have ended up with either the 190xProB or Giottos and no doubt would be happy.. In hindsight for lighter use I could have saved some money and gone with the Redsnapper RS283/RSH12 combo instead (£100 with 10% forum discount).

For my 7D & sigma 150-500 I use a benro carbon tripod & a gimbal head by benro.

Not sure how secure a ball head would be with that weight on it.

I use it with the original QR system but having changed from a 1Ds Mk2 to a 5D Mk3 the large plate hangs off the body so am wondering about changing to Arca Swiss.

What method do you use for portrait-orientation photos? Does the head tip over that far or is there an L-plate that works with that QR system (if so, which one)?

I too have the Redsnapper RS324 legs + RSH12 Ball head and have been very happy with it.

I'm sure the price has shot up recently though since I got mine!

Im thinking of buying a redsnapper Tripod tomorrow, anyone have the forum discount code? Thanks

What was the price for this combo previously? How long ago was this?

My 055XPROB is sturdy, its just like carrying round a pair of ladders so in hindsight would get the 190. Use that one in the studio and its fine for a d700 + 70-200.

Used both ball head and other both manfrotto and they are equally as good.
