Hi, is it the case tripod head are standard fitment to legs....can you mix & match? I'm looking at purchasing Feisol legs with a Manfrotto ball head. Will this work?

Yes, most equipment offer 3/8 or 1/4" screw mount.

Last spring, I got the my second FEISOL CT-3472 RAPID heavy duty tripod.
This time with
column and the FEISOL CB-70D ball head. Very happy with
the products of that brand.

CAUTION: The FEISOL gimbal head (double sided) is recommendable, IMO, only

for AF prime long lenses. For manual focus lenses and AF zoom long lenses, like my
200~400mm ƒ4, I use the single sided Canadian made Jobu Design HD gimbal head.

I can't decide between this http://www.globaltechcommerce.co.uk/feisoluk/23-ct-3441t-traveller.html or the Manfrotto 055CXpro4. The Feisol has a few advantages such as shorter closed length, thicker bottom section, higher load capacity, but the Manfrotto is cheaper and has slightly more weight for better stability. There's a fine line with weight.....I want it light enough that it's no hassles to take on hikes but not so light that stability is an issue. The Feisol is LIGHT! I looked at the Manfrotto in LCE & felt light but the Feisol is nearly half a kilo less.

Don't forget that the stability offered by weight isn't necessarily all part of the tripod. For example many of the better tripods have a hook under the central column from which you can hang a stabilising weight, such as your gear bag.

I use a feisol tripod with manfrotto head without issues and the head is a straight fit (no adapter). I have an even lighter set of legs, the tournament CT3442 and they are more stable than the manfrotto legs they replaced (055ProBX). Hope that helps.

The Tournament CT3442 looking at the spec looks the same Tripod as the 3441T just without the centre column. Feisols site says it doesn't recommend these legs with larger lenses? how do you find it? The lower leg extensions are 19mm I think? Do you find this ok as far as stability goes? I will be using it for a D800/810 with a 200-500 attached. The 10kg payload should be ample, but without looking at it im unsure if its up to it.
I was going with the Manfrotto xpro ball head.

I've used it with a D610 and D810 with 70-200 lens (f4), 24-70 f2.8 plus others without issue. I wouldn't recommend it for use with the exotics and such. A D810 + 200-500 would be fine I'd think (only about 3.5Kg total). I've no experience of the xpro head so can't really comment on that, I use an older 496rc2 which I've converted to take arca swiss. I find it easy to use and stable - the best thing is it is light so I'm happy to carry it :)

Its this head - http://www.manfrotto.co.uk/xpro-ball-head
It is rated to 10kg similar to that of the Feisol legs....it also has the correct 3/8 thread size.
A D810 plus the 200-500 is the most that will be on there for some time....that's a big enough investment to keep me occupied for a no of years! :) Other than that it will be just a wide angle such as the 16-35 f4. The D810 is 900kg & the 200-500 is 2300kg so 3.2Kgs MAX. no worries at all with payload on either the legs or head.

Suppose its just a case of stability. I do like the fact that the tripod including head will only weigh 1.7kgs....I know some say its better to have some weight to the tripod to aid stability. I completely agree but I would not use a heavy tri-pod.....it would get left at home or in the car. I do a lot of walking and hiking when away and id far rather sacrifice slight stability to the load off my shoulder knowing I can have my kit with me without physically hurting. Worst case I can hang weight under it.

a hook under the central column from which you can hang a stabilising weight, such as your gear bag.

That's not always recommended in windy weather. Unless your bag is resting on the ground it can blow about and introduce more vibrations that it prevents.

Head looks good, if bulky :) I think you make a good point about weight and carrying, you can have the most stable of all tripods but if it weighs a ton you'll leave it at home! I think you will be pleasantly surprised at how good the feisol is - I was.

I probably read it on TP but believe a bungee cord between hook and bag works well and pretty light to carry
