Tripod Dilema...

I'm looking for a tripod for my gear and I'm torn between several options!

I'll be using it for mostly outdoor work, mainly for hiking, so weight will be an issue. So far I've found several options that each seem to have pros/cons:
Manfrotto 190CX series
Rednsapper
Redsnapper Carbon

I understand the Manfrotto 190 is a bit smaller than the Redsnappers, I'm not sure how much of a problem that will be though. The standard redsnapper seems fairly heavy at 1.9kg, and although the carbon is 1.6kg it's still a lot heavier than the 190CX at 1.3kg. The redsnappers of course have the advantage of being bigger and cheaper but I'm not sure how build compares?

It's a shame I can't try out the redsnappers in a shop to get an idea of the weight difference :(

Has anyone compared some of these tripods before?

Hi. Depending on what type of outdoor photography you do can I suggest a hiking pole with a tripod bush screw in the top. Not much use if you need long exposures but fine for general photography and useful too.

Dunno if it helps or adds to your dilemma but there's an article/test of tripods in this months Photo plus (haven't got my copy yet so can't comment muchmote in it at the moment).
No doubt that the redsnappers won't be on test there but heard nothing but good about them from folk on here

I did really want something i could use for longer exposures as well rather than just a monopod type job.

Cheers for that, I'll check it out

Look at carbon fibre tripods in the Giotto range, they make several excellent travel tripods that are small light, and stable.

Very impressed with my red snapper, but I wouldnt exactly call it lightweight...

My Camlink tripod is superb. Cost me £50.

Fancy seeing you on her Oli...

As it happens, I've been reading around on tripods recently. Gitzo appear to have about the best name out there. Couldn't help but notice that this group have some interesting special offers:

A couple of days ago they had a seriously nice looking basalt tripod, which I was very close to buying as it was under half price.

Signed up recently :)

Those Gitzo's certainly seem like a bargain! I hadn't really looked at them before but the GT2330 and GT2340 both seem to be good value there, now i need to figure out whether they fit what i'm looking for!
