Have been considering lens options which will add something to my travel shots. I'm mostly just wanting to capture landscapes and cityscapes as I visit various parts of europe over the next year (am visiting from NZ). My gallery will give you a bit of a taste of the stuff i've taken to date.

Have only just got into photography in recent months as I've started travelling so only have the Nikon D40 with Kit lens (17-55) which has done the trick to date without blowing me away.

I've been reading lots about the Nikkor 50mm f1.8 D (yes, I know i'll have to manual focus) and the Sigma 10-20 HMS and while I now know that they are both good lenses, I'm just not sure which one i'll get more use of as I go to places like Croatia (where i'll be spending time capturing nature in National Parks, cities, beaches, sunsets etc).

On a bit of a budget, so really only want to get one at this stage as i'm guessing many of you will suggest getting both as they both are good for very different things.

But essentially i'm asking what is a good lens for general travel photography to complement my kit lens?

Thanks all

For landscapes/sunsets/cityscapes etc the 10-20 is the choice....

The 50mm will be more suited to portraits....

Although travel photography is quite different to landscapes/sunsets/cityscapes etc so for travel photography the 50mm may be ideal..

*edit* after looking at your shots i'd say the 10-20 or possibly spend your money on a better standard zoom?

Thanks for the advice. I've just seen a number of people list the 10-20 as their least used lens (in another tp thread) but I guess it depends how you spend your time with camera in hand.

are there any wide angle alternatives to the sigma which represent better bang for buck?

I'm unsure as i'm Canon but from a Canon POV nothing comes close for VFM

Ted - I think the kit lens is 18-55, hence your comment about not being blown away. I have the Nikon 17-55 and have used it extensively for landscape and travel and has proved to be great. If you want something wider, the view is that the Sigma 10-20 is very good if you can get a good one as some people have reported quality issues. My view on this is that you only hear about the bad ones, not the many good ones.

I have recently bought both the Nikon 12-24 and the 18-200 VR and am off to Rome and Florence next week to properly give them a go and maybe can report more in a couple of weeks. The 12-24 will be almost exclusively for tripod mounted landscape work, but the idea behind the 18-200 is to have a general walkabout lens for travel and with it having VR gives an extra advantage for theoretical f stops / faster shutter speed.

ps, prices for both lenses: 12-24 just under £500, 18-200 just under £400
