On the back of a few recent music threads I just wondered who our favourite musicians are ?

Songwriters, Vocals, Guitar, Classical, Bass, Piano, Harp, Banjo, DJs, Bagpipes, Composers or dare I say it Drums.

It's all subjective so rather than it being an X is better than Y thread - I was just thinking along the lines of a thread where we could share / discuss / indulge in who we like and perhaps share some clips, performances, interviews etc.

I'll pitch in again tomorrow but I'll get the ball rolling

Ian Anderson

Roger Waters

I'm a big fan of the late John Martyn, a wonderful musician I've always thought whose music I never tire of, especially the earlier stuff:

I could NOT have put this better myself. Sadly, I never got to see John play live :(

I would add Jeff Beck and Bruce Springsteen.

Also a big fan of Bob Dylan and the Stones.

Edgar Froese. Okay, he was - and still very much is - known for playing the synthesizer but he was also an accomplished guitar player.

Well as you have already nailed one of mine,
I'll have to go with Paul Simon as the writer
and I prefer Art Garfunkel as the singer.
There are so many classics, to chose from.

But this is probably their best known one.
Written by Paul and sung by Art,
although it did cause some friction at the time as it was writen
about Pauls wife, and he thought he should sing it.

I must admit that I don't think his voice could have carried it off though. ;)

Wow.....forgot how good that is.

'Front man' for possibly the biggest band in the world in their day.

Far more unassuming these days but some lovely stuff all the same.

Sad song really.

...
Songwriters,
John Martyn
Paul Rodgers
Ritchie Blackmore, Stevie Ray Vaughn, Carlos Santana
Classical,
Carlos Santana ;) (too many ...)
Benny Reitveld, Geezer Butler
My dad
Harp, Banjo,
ummmm ....
Chris Tarrant
Bagpipes,
should be banned ;)
Composers
see songwriters ...
or dare I say it Drums.
Ian Paice, Buddy Rich[/quote]

Guitarist : Richard Thompson (also songwriting)
Synths : Mark Shreeve, although the synth he uses at concerts nowadays doesn't make much use of a keyboard, more knobs, swithces, dials and patch leads., and is bigger than one of those American fridges.

Banjo Players? Bela Fleck is pretty handy, or more a more "heavy rock" feel - Hayseed Dixie are pretty cool.

Harp (by which, I assume we're talking harmonica)? The late Lee Brilleaux takes some beating, as does Mick Jagger. You could go old-school and seek out some James Cotton or the great Little Walter, but Charlie Musselwhite takes it for me.

Two giants of the movie soundtrack world.

James Horner.....

Hayseed Dixie are superb. I worked the monitor desk for them one night about eight years ago. The coolest thing was their rider which specified that a selection of fine British bottled beers was to be placed on the stage behind them before they start.

Steve.

Springsteen, Van Morrison, Ed King (from Skynryd), Gary Moore, Jimi Hendrix, Slash (from GnR), John Stewart

IIRC, it's

"A case of ale and a case of lager
and just enough ice to keep it all reasonably cold
4 monitor mixers and bi-amped wedges
and we don't want no excuses
'cause you done been told"

Not forgetting of course that they...
"May be an acoustic band
but they play rather (:whistling:) loud!"

Have to agree with Gary Moore

Never seemed to be one to blow his own trumpet. No doubting his ability with the guitar but overlooked as a vocalist too.

Guitar: Johnny Marr

Rory Gallagher

Piano: Ludovico Einaudi

Vocals: Guy Garvey

He got that Les Paul from Peter Green, when he was 'giving up'.

Saw him live, Still got the Blues tour....very proficient but not the most engaging show.

SRV is one of my favourites, & Knopfler already mentioned, Glen Tilbrook for vocals, Stewart Copeland on drums
