Because of the complications arising from the National Trust copyright stuff the other event has been cancelled and I've chosen the city of York as the new destination.

York has some fantastic architecture and we might even get a chance at street photography too.

Its also got the bonus of having a fairly accessible train station and park and ride so you can park on the outskirts of the city for free and catch the bus in just paying for your return ticket.

For those travelling from further afield there is obviously no shortage of B&Bs and hotels to stay in.

Thank you for your enquiry regarding Illuminating York. The Illuminating York festival is taking place between 6th January - 28th January. It sees the ancient city coming alive with cutting edge lighting technology.

January 6th - 28th from dusk until midnight

The scaffolding of the east side of the Minster will be illuminated with giant projections of the stained glass panels. The intricate scenes will be detailed as if looking through an x-ray at the Great East Window. Between 6 - 7pm each night volunteers will be present to explain the art work.

Sounds fun :) York traffic is a bit of a nightmare on a Saturday from what I remember, but should be good fun. Put me down!
 
Barring the wife double booking me again... I should be there.

As has been Said, York centre on a Saturday will be extremely busy (I used to live on St Saviourgate - just off the shambles) but I'm up for the challenge :D
 
will be after christmas, actually city might be a bit busy with january sales, the park and rides are open and travel from all sides of the city i think now, they are easy although not the cheapest but good for going in for the day dont have to worry about the time on parking tickets.
Lived not far from the city for years and never been in with a camera and looking forward to it, plenty to see and snap.
Looking forward to it.
Where do people fancy seeing, probably going to be as easy to split up for times as well into small groups if there is a lot of us and meet up at places at set times if people want to.
 
Rivers burst its banks again in the city, matt has just seen it on the tv he says bring wellies, but I am sure by then it may be down as long as it stops raining. But even if it rains sure we can find places to go and things to do.
 
Just a thought, would a sunday be more appropriate? Just thinking of too much hustle and bustle of a city centre on a Saturday. It's gonna be packed.

I should be able to make this. Shame about the National Trust though :(
 
I would have thought a Sunday might work better for trying to get some nice shots of the city (IE less people getting in the way). But I am happy with a Saturday too - plenty of people to take shots of :)
 
Beautiful city, I was looking to take my girlfriend away some time in Jan (although not sure she'd be so keen on spending her weekend away wandering around with a bunch of peeps and their cameras!).
I'll certainly see how the new year pans out and perhaps take a drive up.
 
she could go shopping while you take pictures or she could come with us we wont all be taking photos all the time.
 
I was in York on Saturday and it was absolutely chocker in the centre........the Minster was the busiest I have seen it inside as well.

Might be a little better in January :shrug:

Issues regarding copyright and ownership of the actual shots should anyone decide to print/publish/even look at type problems :(
 
I read in a pro mag last month that you are OK as long as you don't make any profit as in selling/publishing them on, if you do they will take 50%. You are perfectly ok to use them for your own personal use, because if you have paid for entry to the place this is classed as payment for the right to take the pictures. I can find the article if you like and post it up.
 
Count me in, Sat or Sun makes no difference.

Traffic has always been bad on the ringroad no matter what time or day I've been there in the past.

York really dies down after Christmas till the Spring. While there will be normal Saturday traffic it won't be anything like it is now. But as someone said it gives us all a chance to try street photography!
 
I'll try for this one as well if funds allow - may manage not to blow it all in France.
 
Have the weekend off work so will be there, might even go on the sunday as well as saturday if I dont get to see everything I want in one day :) otherwise might try to convince cousin to have party that weekend to meet new niece or nephew if they have arrived :) even better photo chances.

My understanding is that ANY photograph taken by a photographer becomes their property, regardless of venue etc.

If a venue does not want this to happen, they should not allow entry to photographers. Its not good enough to allow photographers in, and then try to 'strong arm' them later on. Although to be fair, I think the NT do openly say that they will not allow sales of pictures taken on their property.

Anybody wanting to sell pictures of a well known landmark, may need to acquire 'property release', especially if the photographs were taken on privately owned land. In any case, if you were to sell a picture for publication, 'PR' would usually be handled by the photo agency selling the pic on your behalf.

Thats a very good question Jon.........I'd appreciate any input that you have because I have no idea what'll work best.

Whether we're going to be best splitting up into a couple of groups of 5-6 or just milling around in one big group I'm not sure.

I guess some of the old shops, the narrow streets (are they called the narrows? I can't remember), the minster, maybe take in the yorvik viking centre or the dungeons for a laugh.

Three weeks tomorrow isn't it, so we've got a bit of time to work out what we're going to do.
 
I would love to do the viking centre as I have never managed to get in there. I think allot of our day may depend on the weather. If it is nice and sunny the morning doing street shots sounds like a plan. The park in the centre also has a great set of sculptures. Maybe if we split up to do different things we can set a time to meet up for lunch. And since there is such a big group if you would like me to look into booking us a place for lunch I would be happy to do that. Let me know!
 
I'll be wearing my Talk Photography fleece, come rain or snow I'll be warm and showing everyone what my favorite site is (£10 to my paypal account as promised please Matty ;) )
 
If we split up into smaller groups might get more different shots, I would like to see the minster and some of the streets but then guess it depends on the weather, need to look into it a bit.
Ideas of places to visit and places to have lunch would be nice.
 
A couple of recommendations for places to eat:

Cheap
There's a chinese place called Jumbo's on George Hudson Street that does an eat-all-you-can buffet lunch for £4.99. It's goodo!

Not as cheap
The Ask resturant in York is supposed to be lovely. I haven't been myself but my best friend has and he says the foods great and the setting is better. Assembly Rooms , Blake St.

Expensive
The Blue Bicycle is quite expansive but serves quality food and has several opportunities for pics. It's here > http://www.thebluebicycle.com/index.php?s=1

As for places to photograph, the Jorvik Museum and the Dungeons are very dark inside so you may have problems (good just to visit though). The castle museum (http://www.yorkcastlemuseum.org.uk/) might be better and you'll be able to see Cliffords Tower (http://www.cliffordstower.com/) at the same time. The best street to shoot is obviously the Shambles (http://www.yorkshambles.com/) but it gets packed with people all year round. There's a market close to there for some "market trader" pics. Then, walking from there across to Stonegate there are usually some street entertainers.

And, if anyone is interested there's the National Railway Museum. You may not be surprised to learn that there are lots of trains there :p As well as the mini York version of the London Eye > http://www.nrm.org.uk/home/home.asp

Hmmmm been a while since I ate lunch in york, but Yates was nice by the river last time I went, and when I did it was reasonably priced for reasonably nice food.
The railway museum could be nice, boat trip might be nice as well.
Hmmmm need to consider how much we are likely to spend and possibly consider buying the York pass advertised on the website.

Yeah the Yorvik and dungeons were more for a break from taking pictures/the rain/snow. Its been ages since I went in either - think it was for my 10th birthday actually.

So thats, ooooh nearly 16 years.

Ouch.

I'm old.
 
Theres the air museum at Elvinton too, where Richard Hammond had that crash, thats not far from the park and ride.

There is a lot to do isn't there :o
 
It is if you plan on going to most of those places. Otherwise I'd just pay on the door.
 
Guess it depends on how cold and wet it is, and how my feet are feeling if we do ghost walk, and also what time the car park shuts, or I could leave to go on your own and catch the bus home after?????
 
minster and dungeon are just under £18 without so I guess it depends doesnt it.

Ow my head hurts :(
