Hi folks!

I really am a complete "noob" when it comes to life outside of a camera's "Auto" mode :(, so expect a lot of dumb questions in the not too distant future. That said, I do intend to spend the first few days (weeks?, months?) wading through the instructional posts, elsewhere on the forum, as well as my new camera's (Olympus E 420) manual, before getting on your (collective) nerves :p.

Although I am new to this forum, I'm no stranger to Internet forums in general and spend a lot of my time on an American Bassist's forum called, "TalkBass". Whilst not the most accomplished musician on the board :'(, I do hold the record for "Highest Amount of Totally Superfluous :suspect: and Irritating :annoyed: Emoticons in One Post" - :1st: an achievement that I'm very pround of and am very likely to continue to build on over here (except that I've just noticed that I'm limited to 10 images per post - damn it :-( )!

I also liked to add lots of photos, to accompany my posts on the bass forum, although I might be a bit intimidated to do so over here at TP, as they will be judged by the experts :notworthy:. For instance, here are a couple of pics of my new camera (taken on my old Canon Ixus 75), which are probably object lessons in how not to light indoor shots ....

As far as what I hope to achieve, photographically-speaking, I at least want to be able to imporve the quality of the indoor pictures that I take of my (ever-decling) guitar collection and at best, would like to have the knowledge and ability to be able to take my SLR on trips into the nearby forest and get some really good nature and wildlife shots to add to my "portfolio". We'll see!

So, I look forward to dealing with you all in the weeks and months ahead and hope that the community here is as friendly and professional as it appears to be, at first glance :).

All the best,

Andy

Hi Andy, welcome aboard. It really is very friendly indeed round here. Congratulations on the new camera; it's a hobby almost as expensive as being a musician, but just as enjoyable. :)

Whereabouts in Germany are you? Just out of interest...

Hi  and welcome.

By any chance is Naboo something to do with Star Wars?

Hello and Welcome

A spam rival for Matt Sayle....??????

Welcome... another Oly user... yay!

Any questions... please ask away...

Another E-420 user and another musician! We must have enough to start a TP band now surely?

Wow, I feel like royalty :D! Thanks for the big fanfare, folks.

Now, let me answer some of your posts ...

That's funny, I was just thinking the same thing myself earlier on. Having just sold off most of my vintage and rare basses, I was looking for a cheaper hobby now. Although I got my new Olympus (twin lens kit) for a ridiculous 299 Euros, I can already see how hanging around this forum for any length of time will have me GASsing (G.A.S.="Gear Accquisition Syndrome" where I come from. Is it the same here?) for something pricier in no time :p.

I'm in Hannover (north central Germany), since you ask. Great city and loads of photo opportunities (wonderful buildings, an inner-city forest, plenty of lakes, pretty blonde girls ..... etc.).

That question is, I think, best answered with a You Tube link :D ...

Naboo The Enigma" ...

Yeah, I have a crappy tripod too - seems we have a lot in common ;). What instrument do you play then, Chris :)?

Actually, I had a whole raft of questions about "the usual" (I imagine) stuff; aperture size, exposure times, ISO speeds and lens values, but I think that I've found the answers to most of it here :woot: ....

"The SimCam" ...

How cool is that ?

OK, so I have a lot to learn and a lot of practical experimentation (with the camera itself) to undergo, but that online simulator really helped me to grasp the basics of the "F-Stop" system and makes reading the camera's instruction manual a lot less daunting, now that I understand some of those terms :).

I can't wait to get some time off work to go and try it all out.

Don't worry though, I'll be back for advice and guidance when I find out that I've got it all wrong :p.

Cheers again folks!

I guess I was far off with Star Wars

Hello and welcome.

You'll find this a good site for all thing photographic, with a lot of knowledgeable members always ready and willing to help.

If you have any specific Olympus questions, its worth taking a look over at e-group where both John (theMusicMan) and myself are members.

Chris

Hi Andy

Welcome to TP and just checked out the link to Naboo, looks like a great show/character :)

Yes, you were ... in a galaxy far, far away.

;)

Welcome to TP, Andy

Looking forward to those city shots ... not to mention the pretty blonde girls! :)

If I haven't posted any pics of pretty blonde girls within a month, you can safely assume that I've been arrested whilst trying :D.

Thanks Chris. "The MusicMan" eh !? Another bass player, perhaps?

Hi Andy

Indeed! "The Mighty Boosh" is a TV comedy show which tends to polarize opinions. In my experience, people under 45 and from south England love it and anyone from the north or over 45 can't stand it.

How's that for a pair of sweeping generalisations?

.... Sorry, what was this forum about again? Oh yeah, cameras 'n' stuff, I remember .
