I took my laptop to USA and took a gps mouse attachment too. Not used GPS much but it saved us from getting lost a few times. Downside is it is a clumsy system. That said it made me realise how useful it can be.

Just had a look round for a proper unit and found an offer on the tomtom one - the new model with the sirfstar chip that has much better reception.

Robert Dyas the hardware chain are selling electricals now (mostly at not very competitive prices) and currently have a 20% off everything offer for new customers. So I registered and the £200 price got discounted to £160 and as a bonus the £4.50 p&p shown on the item page changed to £0.0.

Reviews say it is a good unit so I'm hoping they are right :)

http://www.robertdyas.co.uk under home entertainment. If you use quidco , rpoints or other rebate site go through that first.

I've been using tomtom on my pda for a while now and never erm got around to purchasing it because it was so expensive, the new version of the software is going to be less than £80 so I was going to buy it and a proper bluetooth gps rather than my cheap ebay special - sue is always complaining that if I'm not in the car with her she can't use it so if I buy a standalone one, it solves that problem.

Cheers Robert :)

GPS is like the microwave, you can live without it but once you've got it you wonder how you ever managed! :)

Gah its not letting me order it

"There is insufficient stock for order item Tom Tom Satellite Navigation ONE. The amount of available stock for this item is 832 unit(s). "

Why do they always do that. Discount or free delivery for new customers. Whatever happened to looking after your existing customers? What do they ever get? Grrrr

I just bought Tomtom One from PC World a month or so ago. It's an absolute bargain. I've been running for ages on a PDA and the occasional lock ups and resets you have to do are a real pain, usually occuring at the most crucial points in your journey.

The One is just a dedicated GPS with no other function, works straight out of the tin, and is a joy to use tbh. The new chipset is noticeably better too. :)

Barry - you not got a 2nd email address you could sign up with? maybe sign up as Marianne? :D

DS - that's not the problem.... we got two cars, one with GPS as standard and we've got TomTom 510 for Marianne.

I just hate businesses that "suck" you in with tempting, cheap offers for newbies. But what about the loyal ones?

loyal customers never get the same treatment as new ones - just look at the mobile phone companies - existing customers have to get put through to cancellations to get the same offers that new ones get, I switch networks whenever my contracts expire if the customer service people don't give me what I can get for free on a different network - just port my number and away we go.

I probably won't ever use this online store again after this purchase, I'm the one ripping them off - or something.

I've been using Tom Tom on me pda for quite some time. Its good, apart from when it tries to tell you to turn left, half way across the Tyne bridge :gag:

However, a little warning to ye all. Earlier this year as I got my self a 3L jag I thought I'd better get me one of those Road Angels, otherwise it was only going to be a matter of time before I started collecting driver points! Two weeks later and some little scrote tried to break into the car and nick it. Fortunately all the alarms belching out scared the little s*d off. When the man from Autoglass came to replace my side window he said that they are replacing as many of these as they are windscreens. The little B's see the marks from where a sat nav or Angel have been and break in to nick em. Recommendation is to keep them out of site when parked and clean off the sucker marks. That or rig them with a 1000 volt contact wire:naughty:

We have a TomtOM Go 300 and a TomTom Go 510.
My husband drives all over the country and finds it invaluable, just pop in the postcode and away you go, straight to the door.
The speedcam warnings are a boon too.

GET ONE!!! :D

As far as I know it doesnt come with the European maps BUT you can buy the upgraded maps direct from tomtom - you might be best emailing their support to ask them though, that 20% off is valid till the 30th of september so you have till the end of the week. Try emailing or phoning TomTom direct.

thanks Darksaber you are a star. im not too fussed if it doesnt, i mean you cant expect the world for £160 :D

just thinking this may be easier than carrying my pda, cradle, charger cable and bluetooth reciever around all the time lol

Guess they must have had a few orders over the weekend :)

Price has gone up to £250 now!

thats a bit naughty isnt it.

In fact you could probably report them for offering 20% off but highering the price so you don't get any money off. Norty norty shop.

Dear Mr Charlton,

Thank you for your email.

We are sorry to advise that due to the high demand of the product ordered there will be a delay in the dispatch. We hope to receive further stock next week and then orders will be fulfilled.

Please advise if you are happy to wait or would prefer to cancel your order.

And just now:

Dear Matthew Charlton,

Thank you for placing an order with Robert Dyas Home shopping.

You are receiving this email because the order you have placed with us contains a TomTom One V2 Satellite navigation system. This product is part of our new store to door catalogue that was launched on the Robert Dyas website on Friday 22nd September. The TomTom One V2 was priced incorrectly at £199.99 instead of the intended price of £249.99. This incorrect price coupled with our 20% new customer discount means that we have experienced exceptionally high demand for this item.

We will be honouring all orders placed for the item but we will not able to meet our normal delivery promise of 5 working days. We will begin to dispatch orders for the TomTom during the week beginning Monday 4th October. You will receive an email from us when your order has been dispatched containing a tracking number for your parcel.

Please accept our apologies for the delay. If you would prefer to cancel your order rather than wait please call our customer services team on 08454503004 (Option 2).

Yours Sincerely,

Robert Dyas Home Shopping Team

Just got my email as above too :(

Cancelled my order, need it sooner than that - I can get it from Argos for £179.99 with my brother's discount and I can stick it on the argos store card with 3 months interest free credit instead.

At least they are honouring the deal :)

I'm in no hurry. Been thinking about getting one for months so another week or two won't hurt me. Worth waiting just to spite them :)

I would have loved too but really wanted to get it to try out this weekend so that sue knew how to use it properly.

Just subscribed to traffic and speed cameras for a year - the traffic thing is excellent but you need a phone with a GPRS data connection for it to work. Tells you how long a delay there is on your route, how long a queue and has a button which will re-route you around it :)

I went through a cashback site so it should cost me £152 - another reason to wait :)

Really struggling with this - After two phone calls and three emails my order hasn't been cancelled.

All the call centre monkey could say on the phone with my 2nd call was "well it certainly doesn't look cancelled, I'll make sure it gets cancelled for you".

Oh well, if it comes through its going on ebay, at least I'll be able to get some money back for it.

After a failed delivery yesterday (so much for emailing delivery advice and tracking) it arrived today. Had a quick play with it - looks ideal.

Impressed that it managed to get a fix on me sat in my lounge 8 ft from the windows. Just playing with some voice files now :)

They finally acknowledged my order cancellation yesterday and told me a refund had been processed.

Nice little unit isn't it - the one. I set all my favorites on there and as I said - after we finished at Chester Zoo I told it to find restaurants near me and it found a nice Toby Carvery 2 miles away.
