right then. week 4.

i decided this week to go out for a wander for a couple of hours to see what i could get. i had my first proper go at taking photos of random people.

i had on panning shot that i thought would come out really well, but when i got back and had a look in DPP it came out quite soft, so it never made the cut

so then the photo for this week




i am quite please with this one, but, i thought i had shot it at a lot lower F number, which is what i wanted, so i could get a nice star on the street light.

but i missed it , so never mind . maybe one for my first re-shoot

also shot this while i was out , that i thought i might share, it could fit to the street theme




could just do with a better lens that my 17-85 which is a bit soft sometimes, looking forward to renting a 10-22 for holiday :D

Both very very good shots! :clap:

First is a peach! And you'r star could ruin the effect by making it too polished, if you get what I mean? :thinking:

Lovely blues/purples in that second one, excellent stuff! :thumbs:
 
Same here - I prefer the first, if only because it fits the theme better. Nice conversion. :thumbs:
 
Both are very good shots especially the first one, :thumbs: has a real Charles Dickens feel about it. :naughty: Looks like it has been raining unless it is the light thats making the cobbles shine.

nope , bone dry thank god :D , it was bloody freezing so last thing i needed was rain :D


im really impressed with number 1 , the more i look at it the more i like it:D

Like the start you've made Richard,DOF in 1 is super, Chopped is really good and different but I don't think you're giving it full commitment, FAKE blood indeed...Pah!:)....Mick
 
Hi Richard, I can imagine your frustration when nobody seems to have looked at your thread for ages - and here's me only just dropping in for the first time, so I hope better late than never. :)

Week 1: The ipod is such a cool design, I think this could have made an even stronger image, using the headphones in the same way. A good start and I like the dof.

Week 2: I agree with most other people's comments on this - there's not much going on across the centre of the pic and I would like to see more of the chips and cards. I love the pose though and think it's a good illustration of a very, very difficult poem. :thumbs:

Week 3: Ouch - this one hurt. A few years go I chopped the end right off my thumb when preparing parsnips. Looking back, the blood-stained knife and parsnips would have been a good foil for your Chopped. No suprise that I didn't think of taking the photo at the time. :lol: So, I like yur shot, but that blood is jut a bit too realistic for me. :eek: :)

Week 4: I like #1 best - it's got bags of atmosphere and drama in spades. :clap:

Really liking the first shot and it's on theme. The second has lovely colours and is a good shot too.
 
Catching up a little when I can in between unpacking. I love "chopped" you have the fake blood spot on :thumbs: as for the street photo's no#1 is very Jack the Ripper as said, the low angle really adds to the composition and atmosphere of the shot, lighting is also excellent :clap: no#2 is a great photo in it's own right but it dosen't seem to fit the theme imo, no matter it's a very nice shot :)

Missed your last couple sorry Richard - but you've really raised the bar these last 2 weeks :clap:

I love both of your street shots for very different reasons.
First one - very eerie and absolutely dripping atmosphere. I totally get the Jack the Ripper bit that Mike mentioned :thumbs:
Second one - Beautiful night shot. Lovely contrast between the blue sky and water and the warm lighting on the banks. Nice silhouetting of the trees too.

Speed : :clap: :clap: :clap:
I suspect that there will be a lot of light trails featuring for speed. I haven't looked at many other 52's yet this week, but this one has got to be one of the stand out shots.
Great choice of location. The spotlights on the grass have allowed you to keep some lovely detail in the wall and to maintain the colour of the grass and architecture. At the same time you have just the right amount of darkness on the road to make those trails really stand out.

So many layers of interest packed into this too that really take your eye around the frame.
- Nice foreground interest with the railings.
- I love the second curve of road in the background to draw you further into the shot.
- Skyline nicely broken up by the trees on the LHS and the buildings on the RHS.

Really, really well done!
 
Hi Richard,

Street#1 is a corker. I love the processing on it and the low field of view. It's got that 1800's london feel to it that others have mentioned. One for the wall methinks.

As for Speed. That's another great shot. It almost has an HDR feel to it but it's so subtle it's great. You really seem to have the processing nailed. However I find my eye drawn to the light trails, and I find the spikes a little distracting. Glad Sarah has said the opposite because that means it works fine as it is.

Don't know how you've managed so few comments with such a great selection of shots. I'll be back next week!

back from holiday now so im just going to use some of the photos i took on holiday as my next two weeks seen as i took 11gigs worth of photies :D and i spent a lot of time trying different things

first of all

Week 6 : present


i found out the theme for this week on wed morning so i too this pic for the theme

it was taken at famara beach on the north of lanzarote, i have to admit its the first time i have ever been to a beach like this. when we got there all the red flags were up and some of the waves were coming in at a good 6-7 foot.

it was amazing :D

This is one totally out of my comfort zone, it is the first time i have ever tried anything like this.

it was taken using the 10-22 i rented for holiday (love this lens). taken on the balcony using my fiancee as model/guinea pig, using flashgun pointed at the wall behind, its had a litte editing in photoshop.

any advice on how i can really make it stand out would be greatly appreciated

Love your #1 street shot, Richard. Very gritty and moody.

Not keen on your present shot. I feel it would have been much better if the main subject was on a separate third to the background people. Shoot that with a narrower dof and it's an interesting shot. This way it looks a bit messy.

Your portrait, however, is lovely...although she looks like she hasn't got a nose. ;)
 
Loook at the eyes! They really do pop! And I really think that the high key effect works wonders on this shot.

i think the issue was using the white table, the light has bounced and blown out all detail on the underside of her nose , hopefully the burn has worked , but its the first time, i have done any so i hope it works

#64 is the best of your portrait bunch Richard and it's a great capture. I really like that and your re-processing worked a treat. The high-key processing works really well, but for me (and if you reshoot) it might be worth asking your better half to wear a (black/grey/white) plain top. Not really critique as such though. You've done a great job nailing the eyes.

Not sure about your self portrait. It looks a bit ethereally soft. Did you go for that look?

I quite like Present. Again, the only minor change would be to try and see if you can clone out those people as they distract me a bit. Maybe a black and white conversion might also work (and I would be tempted to colour pop the red pumps but that might not work so well).

The reason the #64 shot looks better is it has more contrast. The latter two shots are a bit grey. give them a tweak and they'll be nice.:)

The burning has worked to give some more definition to her nose and it's a lovely portrait. I love the pose and the eyes are fantastic :clap:
I'd still like to see the other 2 portraits with a bit of a contrast boost though - I think they're both really close to being there.

I'm not too sure about present. I can't really see the link to the theme other than it being taken at the present moment in time :thinking:
As a shot I like the idea of looking past the person to the stunning beach beyond, but as has been said the other people just in front of the legs are a bit offputting.
 
The reedit works very well. Very nice comfortable and natural portrait.
 
The original shot has much more oomph to it. Very good portrait and looks expression is super.

as for this week , i have to admit i was totally stumped when i read this weeks theme, i had no idea what to shoot , 6 months ago would have been easy , but they have not got rid of the old press at my work, so i was really stumped for idea , and then it hit me.... and i mean litarally, i still have a lump on my foot to prove it.


so here we go , 2 options this week , as i cant decide which one i like better






i think i like the second one more, but everytime i start to lean towards that one , i start to lean back the other way.

for this image , i tried to make it a bit more interesting with the lights, the lights are all from servers, rack mounted in my office, with the main lights turned out to give a better effect, although i was then stuck with trying to avoid excess noise on the image, but hey ho , you cant have everything
 
wow! i prefer #1 as the light reflections are just fantasic!! sorry to hear about your buise lol

arrrgh that pic was another one of my options for this weeks photo, I'm rapidly running out of them now :) I've had a hdd on my desk for the past couple of weeks waiting to take it apart and photograph it

1st shot wins it for me, well done for getting it in so quickly

Poem....Love the lighting in this shot :clap:

Chopped...Very gory and realistic, hard work really has paid of with this shot.

Street....To great shots both completely different, hard to choose a favourite so I won't :D

Speed....Nice to see the light trails mixed with a bit of what York is known for.

Present....I think we can call this a crowbar ;)

People....The second edit works better, I like this shot alot!

Wow, three good shots. I agree about present being crowbarred, but I like it. People... a lovely portrait and the edit has worked a treat. Of mechanical, the first one, the lights work better for me. I've a hard drive waiting for me to dimantle and play with...
