It's that time of year again where the weather gets cold and I've found a rat run under my garage. I only noticed it because I saw a hole chewed in some wood (where the wall meets the floor) and the bite marks are too small to be a mouse. I got some more light down it and I could see a small tunnel. Thought I could keep them at bay with living in the middle of nowhere but I guess not. The garage is clean with no food or water in so it must just be for shelter.

Has anyone any experience with trying to get rid of them? Never had to do it before but I'm guessing poison and traps is the best way?...or a cat. No I'm not planning the "humane" way, they're nothing but pests and i'll quite happily keep myself armed with a spade:rolleyes:

My garage is about 20m away from my house and no signs of them around or in here yet. Would it still be an idea to trap the house?

Borrow a terrier......they are good at catching rats

Call the council pest controllers. They will know where to look for signs of rats around your property and the best way of dealing with them. Forget the spade etc. Another rat will turn up and so on ad infinitum.

Our 2 JRT's are certainly better with rats and mice than the lazy cats, the bird feeders used to attract them, the dogs dealt with them, short sharp and quickly. However, as I doubt that is the best excuse for getting a dog, I would certainly suggest at least initially getting the professionals in to advise, although depends on your local council if they can send anyone or whether you go for a local independent and either way, it will probably cost but probably worth it in the long run.

Thanks I'll try them, completely forgot about the council.

Do you have any idea what cats are and what they really do or don't?

Yes I do. Four legged creatures that sleep. I should have made my sarcasm more obvious, was trying the "speech to text" thing out and it didn't really work.

I've had cats in the past and I would agree small dogs would be better for rats, but I wouldn't buy a domesticated animal purely for that fact lol.

you seem to be working on the assumption that the cat will do what you want.

bawhahahaha :D

Lol no I know fine well by experience that they do the opposite. It would end up with the cars in the garage getting scratched as they make them into their beds.

Fenn trap in the run - but do make sure its in a tunnel so it doesnt get birds or curious fingers

I can tell you my local authority charges £25 for a call out and IMO it's well worth it, like @Yv for me it's our various bird feeders that attract the rats to our garden....but since having a poison box in the garden any rats we do see are only seen once or twice before they find the poison
