CBBC presenter gets complaints about her disability, are people really this small minded and intolerant, it almost makes you embarrassed to belong to the same society as these prats, the poor girl must privately feel devastated, to say they should be ashamed is a gross understatement.

i actually cant beleive what i just read.... How insensitive and rude this is. The only reason a child would be scared is if the parent is reacting to it in an adverse way...

It really doesnt get any worse and always adds more to my beleif that British culture is too far gone to recover :shake:

My son is disabled and you would not believe the abuse we have had over the years. We have a blue badge and a large wheelchair access van and get verbally abused all the time for parking in disabled spaces. It really gets to me that no one has a go at all of the builders vans that abuse the spaces when it is raining but a child in a wheelchair is fair game:bang:

My standard response to the comments is you don't have to be old to be disabled. It seems to shut most people up. The other good one is when my son says in a very loud voice "what is the man staring at me for"

It seems to me that in this age of paying for perfection people need to take a step back and realise how lucky they are to have their health and dignity, and also to teach values of respect to their children.

There, nuf said.

amen to that.

I can't wait to leave this country. It's full of narrow minded ******s, present company excepted.

Im sorry this just takes the p*ss!

So what if she has one arm, what would they do if someone came along speeding down the road, and crushed their legs, and ended up paralyzed waist down, or even ending up with no legs at all. They will soon realise what a complete and utter ***** they have been!!!

People like this really get on my nerves they have no consideration for others and only care about themselves!

Good for the presenter for having the guts to apply for the position and getting the job, she cant get fired just for people complaining that would place a biggy on her rights as a person, and would make an even bigger uproar with the charaties!!!

My rant is over!

Bloody idiots :shake:

How can kids grow up to be respectful and open minded if their parents aren't either of those things?

At least it appears most people are supporting her, and it's just the odd few whackjobs that are causing problems, as per ****ing usual. The beeb are also defending her, so it's unlikely it's going to cause serius implications to her career, but it's still unacceptable. They voiced those opinions on a forum, which is obviously not very well moderated. The views are ignorant, discriminating and genreally just plain wrong.

****ing muppets.

Crazy people!

But I guess it was much about the same when we went from the "BBC English" spoken news presenters
to the news readers with regional dialects, to the "coloured" news presenters (shock horror! (TIC just in case))

Both are readilly accepted now without a second glance, so I guess that disabled presenters will become the norm over a period of time.

but for now I also echo the sentiments here WTF!

I can remember when I watched those programmes (must be about 6-7 years ago now.

There was a programmes on CBBC (cant remember the name now) But it had a presenter in a wheelchair, but also he played for the disabled british basketball team in the olympics.

But cant remember any uproar being made about him (is it because he was an olympian, or what. But people who are disabled get a hard enough time as it is in the effin' streets, the worst she needs is getting it on the friggin TV aswell. URghhhh!!!

Bloody hell, those people really are insensitive - "positive discrimination"? stupid or what?

Bet nothing happens though, which is the most disgusting part.

It's just absolutely bloody disgusting - people should think before they open their mouths and mortally offend and devastate other people. I really hate the narrow minded, blinkered members of society sometimes.

My girlfriends father is disabled due to a motorbike accident some years back. When i was around there once, iheard the neighbour calling him a f***ing useless cripple. To say i was angry was a bit of an understatement, i could have ripped his scrawny neck out. My girlfriends dad is the nicest bloke you could ever meet, and once you get past his Devonshire Dumpling accent:lol::lol: he is great, he has never once troubled anyone about his disability, and just gets on with his life:thumbs:

My son watches cbeebies and I noticed the disabled lady in question and I said nothing and nor did my son.

He didnt go screaming from the room, he took no notice.

If he asked me questions about it we would google her name and find out about her together.

Like any right minded parent would do. Unfortunately there are many people out there who are frightened of anything different to them and they're determined that their children will be too.

These people are toal T*****S but being cynical is this a result of the fact that all we see on the TV are gorgeous but interchangeable blondes, all this "perfection" throws any sligfht imperfection into focus.

Personally I wish we had more disabled and ugly presenters because I bet there is so much talent oput there not getting a chance because they dont have "The Right Image"

The problem is, parents dont teach their children tolerance and respect for others anymore, and that's where 99% of society's problems lay IMO.

My children won't go mugging old ladies. Why? Because I've taught them to think of other people and other people's feelings. Respect for other people.
They won't (for the most part) say anything they know is deliberately rude and hurtful. Why? Thought for other people.

Too many parents just think their only job is to provide a roof, some clothes and some food until the child is old enough to buy those themselves. Wrong. Children are a blank canvas when they are born, and need to be taught how to *be* a person, how to integrate into society with others.

Too right Marcel.

Even though I am 16, I have been brought up proper!!

Think of others before yourselves, is one of the lessons I was given as a little'un. I dont go picking fights just beacuse someone looked at me wrong etc. I just dont take notice of it. Unless from a previous thread I have made it gets to me and I tell someone about it and get them sorted out the right way. I dont go and sort things out in my own way.

If you think about it, thats the same situation as our dear old Cbeebies presenter. People have a problem about the fact she has one arm, they take matters into their own hands and complain about her, just because she is "different"

Anyways 3rd rant over and done with

Makes you proud to be British dont it ?

She wants to grow a tail and turn into a Mermaid !!

Imagine the complaints if she did that....

Just hope they take no notice of 'Poster Barry'

are you having a pop at me?

sorry i though you were having a go cause you used my quote.

i apoligise.

OMG she's gorgeous.

Seriously, I think there are some real planks out there and most of them are journalists who dig out the fraction of the population that are bigger planks than them and giving them air time or print space and then selectively quoting them. I wish the Government created a register of Tabloid Journalists and publish it so I can choose who I live next to.

P.S. Yes I know there are some good Journalists out there

i heard this story on jeremy vine at lunchtime.

strangely for a vine debate it was incredibly one sided, in that no one on the show or who phoned in was actually agreeing with the original complaint, and i cant see why anyone would.

by making a fuss and wanting to keep their children away from seeing people with disabilities is the reason why the kids are (or rather will be) frightened of people with disabilities, in effect they are creating the childs complex by bad parenting (or their own issues)... then again these people are probably the narrowminded retarded morons who think that a disability is something you can catch from contact with someone with a disability, sheer madness!

I just find this shocking! How someone can sit down and actually write those things is beyond me. How can they seriously put those ridiculous thoughts down in writing. They really need their heads looked at. Are we back in the time where people with disabilities should be part of a "freak show"? No, of course not! Surely we are beyond that and therefore, this lady deserves to be able to do her job without being treated like this. What a crazy world!

I think it's pretty sad really, just a very narrow minded viewpoint. You're always going to get some like it. What really would have made me smile was if the BBC commented that their programming is for a 21st century audience and that they appologise that those left back in the 19th century may find some aspects difficult to digest. I'm sure the Beeb could ask someone like Stephen Fry for an eloquent way to say something similar that will make them feel 5cm tall.

once you get past his Devonshire Dumpling accent:lol::lol:
Oi! nothing wrong with a Devonshire accent :p

Oooh arrr! Ar muh got err new tats done down Bemminser – they’m gurt macky. Gif I one a they scutlers. Churz me ole babber!

from what I gather about the report it's only 9 official complaints

still too many though.........

think the people that complained were stuck what to say when their children asked the question about why the presenter had one arm so they decided to complain instead

Indeed. More likely that it embarrassed them than frightened the children.

:agree:
TBH.. What bothers me is that the media even bothered to stir this up? What's the point? and another TBH I feel the media is trying to 'cash in' on her disability and the remarks! - it sells papers, fills airtime etc... There will always be morons out there so why put them in the spotlight?.... It just encourages these idiots :bang:

I do agree that perhaps some children could be frightened by someone with one arm. But I think that person would have to be foaming at the mouth and wielding an axe with the other arm!

Someone who is disabled and is of the personality to present children's TV is not the kind of person your children end up being frightened of. Just explain it to them in an open and honest manner - if you can actually BE open and honest with your kids - rather than complaining about it.

Sometimes the people in this country make me ashamed to live here. :(

what scares me is that quite a few news stories lately have been picking up on peoples comments from online forum and making them into news stories.
makes me very careful what i say.
anyone with any sense knows that what people say on forums should be taken with a pinch of salt anyway.

to play devils advocate as a kid someone with anything 'wrong' with them is a bit freaky.
however thats just me being devils advocate

I wholeheartedly think they are stupid people to be cross or complain or be upset

Most kids watch the news and theres much worse on there, and kids tv generally puts them into an epileptic coma before they ever see a presenter
