I'm thinking about selling the 400D and with a bit of saving get a better camera, i decided it was either sell the lens with it and buy a nikon D3 or keep the lens and go for a Canon 1D MkIII or something along that line.

So what do you guys rekon would be the best bet?

Tony

But the smallness of the 400D is doing my head in, i can't normally get a proper grip around the camera. I want to try a grip that actully fits the 400D and see if that makes it any better for me to hold.

A 1D would be great but if it's just the size that's getting you, you could try a 40D. Much bigger than a 400 and mucholessdosh!

Or may be a 5D if you are really keen on spending a bit more.

Thanks Badger, never really thought about the 40D

Tony

I don't think you've scratched anywhere near the limits of the 400D yet and the glass you've got will not do justice to a 1D3. Get a 50D as a halfway house.

:agree: or the 40D as mentioned by others :D

Steve

I've got a 40D and can't really fault it. Obviously I want a 5D mkIII but my wife keeps telling me that I don't and I'm just imagining it.

And of course, she's right. What on earth would I want a 5D for?

thanks gaz, i'm now thinking will a new piece of glass be best of the the time being?

there is another option here, the Nikon D200 or D300. I don't think you're totally committed to a system yet through having a pile of lenses and both those are bigger than the 400D.

I'd agree it's not good if you don't feel comfortable with the camera you have

So what is it you're trying to achieve?

Is it the size of the camera or the quality of the lens you're not happy with.

I'm confused

:)

70-300mm hmmmmmmm, can't decide

Are you just wanting something new and shiny?

If you don't know what you want then are you buying it because you need it or because you just want something new?

That would just be silly :D!!!

Anyone wanna buy my Bigma? Or my Sigma 10-20? Oh yeah, I have a 1,4 TC I never use....

techno, chill and research, bad purchases sting.

Gary.

The camera, it's too small to fit in my hands................................................................

As described there

Then mentioning about getting a lens instead of worrying about the size of the camera for a little while.....

Are you just wanting something new and shiny?

SHINY :D No, i've been looking at the Canon EF 70-200mm f/4.0 L USM Lens for a while.

I can second a grip. I found my 350 too small but couldn't afford to change to an xxD so I bought a grip, best buy to date! made it much more comfortable, doubled battery life and vertical shooting is much easier

Lol gary :D

I personaly would get, if I were a canon user, the 40 or 50D with a grip. 1 series is mega expensive, and overkill imho. Save for some good glass as this will be a far wiser purchase.

I personaly still have the D50, but, as per my sig, I have some nice glass. The D50 holds well in the hand due to it's size and still takes a damn good photo. Remember also that the photos a camera produces is nearly always down to the person using it.

you buy something and regret it afterwards.

Try a grip. IF you don't like it, try a 30D/40D/50D. Try a grip on that. Then try the 1D3

I went to get the grip before when i got my cleaning stuff, but when i came back to the car it was the wrong one then when i went back to the shop they didn't have the right one in stock, so they gave me my money back

Looks like everyone is telling you to "get a grip" :D So do it!!

 i got given the 40D grip and it looked massive and bulky to hold, won't that be the same with a grip made for the 400D

to some extent, but they're tailered for each camera. The 1D3 you mention has the massive and bulky grip built in, so if you don't like the feel of a gripped camera, the 1d3 may not be the right choice.

Ehh?

I thought you wanted a bigger camera? Its massive and bulky versus small and dinky! I don't there is much of a middle ground?

Maybe I am nuts! Are you sure you don't just want some new stuff? :D

The 400D with grip is bigger than the 40D on it's own. Try this first.

Then try the 40D with the grip as this will be more comparable to the 1 series in terms of over all dimensions.

Get it straight in your head what you want first, and then ask questions. otherwise people get bored with offering advice if the person, let's be honest, is not really listening, and just wants something new.

I thought that was the whole point? Your camera is too small, you wanted something bigger?

When i hold the 400D in my hand, both of my little fingers hang off the bottom which is quite annoying, which is why i wanted a grip

Erm if i just wanted something new i would have gone out there and brought what i wanted, How am i not listening to advice? I don't just want something new

:suspect::shrug:

Erm, yes. what i meant was is the grip for the 40D much bigger than the grip for the 400D? or are they all the same size?

If you were referring to me not listening to your advice Woodsy, i didn't see what you wrote until just now....

no no, not my advice mate.

It's just you've gone from a pro level DSRL, which is mega bulky, to a 70-200, and then said the 40D grip is too bulky. I'm just a little confused about what it is exactly that you want to achieve, that's all fella :)

Tbh Tony its more a case of you don't seem to be able to decide what you want or need so keep posting for advice and then not necessarily listening:

Last month, you were talking about moving to a D300 because the "400D doesn't have quick enough focusing and and has alot of shutter lag."

Then a couple of weeks later you ask about if you should buy a 70-200mm f/4 L

You then asked if you should buy a battery grip or a 70-200m and then proceeded to ignore all the advice given and eventually it turned out you just wanted a new battery so the camera lasted all day.

Now, this is fair enough but what you will find is that if you keep posting these same questions over and over then people will stop answering you. I know its hard to decide what to get, but you need to sit down and take stock of your current gear, what you take pictures of and what exactly is holding you back - only then will you know what you want. Once you are at that stage, use google, get a list of options, research them, narrow it down, then when you are down to a final decision, that is the best time to ask for advice.

Not having a go, just trying to be helpful.

TBH tony, if you are not satisfied with the feel of the camera, i would suggest walking into a shop and trying a few out, thats the only way you are going to get to grips with that issue, if its Canon then the 40d sounds a good start, if its Nikon then its got to be a D200 or D300.
But either way get your self to the shops, i am sure the holding of the camera will sort one problem out..

good luck

tough time putting what i actully want to say in to words  and then when i read it back to myself i just confuse myself even more.

Basically i am having a hard time getting used to the holding space on the 400D, like both of my little fingers are handing off the bottom.

I see where your coming from. i couldn't decide if i wanted a lens or a grip, then i wanted a new camera  I have a crazy mind.

I'm now thinking about sticking with the 400D and saving some more, then looking at getting the 40D and some L's :)

That is what i will probs end up doing once i know for sure what sort of camera i am looking at, 40D is sort of in my price range too so that seems good.

How are you holding your camera Tony? It sounds as if you are holding the camera with both hands (little fingers underneath?). I hold the lens in the palm of my left hand, supporting all the weight, and just use my right hand to balance the kit and operate shutter/buttons etc. (Left hand takes care of focus/zoom etc, and aperture ring in the old days....)

Would this be more comfortable for you?

I normally hand my right hand on the shutter button and my left hand on the bottom of the lens like i think how you do it, but if i do hold it with both hands on the kit my fingers get lost and it just feels uncomfatble and sometimes i need to hold it like this if i'm trying to pan.

Does that make sense to you?

Tony ;)

I don't have big hands, I don't need technique tips on how to hold a camera, but that 400d thing is....microscopic.
It made me want to wear a skirt...and red nail varnish, Pfft...everyone knows I wear pink, duh..
