I currently own -
  • Eos 6D mark 1 body
  • EF 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6 L IS USM
  • EF 24-105mm f/4 L IS USM
Predominantly, I want to be able to take pictures of my teenage daughter playing rugby (indoor training, outdoor playing) or Jiu-Jitsu (indoor). Im lucky that with regard to the rugby i can walk the touchline so not fixed in one spot. All the kit is fine and takes the pictures i need, as usual its the photographer that is lacking, but I'm growing to dislike the push/pull action of the 100-400 and the fact that it has extends into the longest position when carried vertically and not held by the lens.

I'm thinking of upgrading but am torn about which route to take -
  1. Sell the EF100-400 and buy the mark II version.
  2. Sell all the kit and upgrade to a R6 with RF 24-105mm f/4 L Lens but then i have an issue with what other lens to buy. I'm thinking of the RF 70-200mm f/2.8 L IS USM Z Lens with an 2x extender *OR* RF 100-500mm f/4.5-7.1L IS USM. Both of these offer me the reach. The 70-200 will perform much better indoors, when the light isn't brilliant, than the 100-500.
  3. Sell the 6D body and EF 100-400 and buy a R6, EF mount adapter and EF 100-400 mark ii.
I 'think' i need a reach of between 300-400mm which has stopped me changing to a fast 24-105mm lens. Using with a 2x converter wouldn't really work on the 24-105mm as id still be at 200mm.

I like the idea of a fast lens, but in the RF world its limited to a handful of lenses which can be used with an extender, which is why ive had to go with the expensive 70-200mm.

My wallet says option 1 but i'm spending to get rid of the push/pull action and nothing else.

Option 2 is the nuclear option, which my wallet definitely doesn't like but i get everything i want/need for many years to come and a new shinny body.

Option 3 gets me a new body, a spend to get rid of the push/pull lens but isn't as nuclear as option 2.

Any guidance would be gratefully received.

I like option 1 as well.
My 6D was great in low light and coupled with the 100-400 mk2 image stabilisation should be great.

I'm sure you already now but, RF stuff is very pricey.

Good luck.

Perhaps option 1 and if that does not meet your requirements, incorporate parts of options 2 and 3 as and when.

I would say that there is more to moving from the mark i to mark ii 100-400 than just the push pull eg better image quality and autofocus.

You could try all this kit before you buy using Try the Kit.

Get R6ii with EF-RF adaptor to use the EF24-105 (if funds allow get the RF if you can unless you have a 2nd EOS DSLR), and get the 100-400 Mk2.

Surprising how many Mk2 100-400s I saw yesterday in London Wetlands Centre (probably why it's holding it's value better than the equivalent Nikon, because everyone likes the Z100-400 but the RF100-500 is like Marmite)....Just saying...

The 100-400 mk2 is legendary and for good reason.

I like option 1 as well but I would say the 100-400mk1 shouldn't extend when carrying it vertically unless you've got the friction ring set too loose. Mine at least when tightened stays where its been set. The push pull is a pain though, awkward to handle and tends to pump dust into the body and onto the sensor.

Thanks for all the responses.

Currently, I'm leaning towards getting the R6 with RF-EF adapter, sell the 100-400mm and get the mark 2 version. This lets me keep the 24-105mm that i have and more importantly keep the costs down.

Further questions -

Is there any reason to upgrade my EF 24-105mm f/4 L IS USM to the RF 24-105mm f/4 L Lens?

Do the RF-EF adapters cause any Fstop decrease like an extender does? Is it worth getting the plain adapter or the one with the control ring?

Not, unless you feel your EF isn't 'optimal' - when OH bought her R6 she traded in her EF 24-105 but still kept her EF 24-70/2.8Mk2 to use with her 5D4. Part of the trade-in kit was the 100-400Mk2. She has seller's regret for the 2 lenses, did not like the 100-500 at all, but has since bought the RF24-105/4. She is now looking for another 100-400 Mk2.

Step down from the 100-400 quality wise, she might have been unlucky with her copy, but the lens was part-exd against an EF300/2.8.

Option 3
You’ll be amazed at your keeper rate with the R6 after the 6d.
I know cos I did the same thing

Have you seen the Canon "Try the kit" hire scheme?? Pick a hire period over a bank holiday and get more days with the kit above the normal free "Sat/Sun" hire period.

If you are lucky they will call and say "can we send the kit a day early" :)

Very efficient service if you can afford to be in for the delivery/collection (I think they have some collection / drop off points in stores as well) but will need to pay a hefty deposit - but returned swiftly once they have the kit back
